350z Trunk Repair - Hatch Support Lifts (No more concussions!)

You're probably here because you're tired of using your head to hold the hatch of your 350z and getting a mini neck work out every time. It's a fairly common problem and fairly easy to change as well! In this video I'll show you how i did mine! Useful info below...
Make/Model: Nissan 350z
Year: 2003 (Generation 5, 2003-2009)
Engine: 3.5L V6 VQ35DE
Problem: Hatch/"Trunk" does not lift when brought halfway up nor does it stay up when completely lifted.
Solution: Replace Hatch support lifts. Properly support hatch in open position when changing lifts to avoid injury (have someone help if possible). Be sure to secure lifts with locking pins to prevent injury or damage.
Parts Used:
Lift Supports Depot Rear Hatch Supports - amzn.to/2lC4GAJ
Tools Used:
- 12 mm Wrench
- 13 mm Wrench
- Adjustable Wrench (In place of 12-13mm wrench)
- Interchangeable Ratchet Wrench (amzn.to/2lAzdyS)
- 10 mm Socket
- Rubber Mallet (NOT FOR STRIKING)
- WD-40 Lubricant (optional, amzn.to/3u56t4N)
- Safety Glasses (I like being able to see)
- Gloves (optional)

My struts didn't come with instructions, so realize didn't they had a locking pin, thought it was a spring clip you could just push onto the ball joint. you saved me a lot of hassle, Thanks bud

This was a great video! I did not received any instructions with my struts and this video helped me alot. The tips about the locking pin and installing bracket hump pointing upwards were extremely helpful.

Nice video. Question for you. Why not attached the ball joint to the screw first like how you removed it? Then proceed with the brackets?

The ball joint cup unscrews off the strut. Or at least the ones i ordered does.

You don't have to unscrew anything. Use a flat head screwdriver to pry out the retainer clips on the old struts. Pull out the old struts. Pop the new struts in. I found this out while installing new hatch struts on my 350z a couple days ago. Unless the mounting hardware is severely degraded, there is no need to add the extra work.

I've replaced mine 3 times and it seems like NO lift can hold the heavy hatch open. What lifts are you using?

I purchased rear hatch lift supports for a 2005 350z part #2008 4194 from maxpow thru Amazon. They did not come with the retaining clips. Any suggestions?

Anna Tannehill some lift supports are designed without them. Yours might be that type, if not I’d message the seller about it

How did you use the original hardware? The ball joint end doesn't come off the strut, does it?

R. Cooper I only reused the 10mm that are shown at 0:42 the ball joints were the new ones. The ball joint end was separated and need to be snapped in to place. I can’t remember on the oem ones though, threw mine away already lol
