Surely no one actually thinks the JLPT is a good test
Timestamps:
00:36 Reason 1: It doesn't accurate test Japanese ability
03:09 Reason 2: It's too easy
04:59 Reason 3: JLPT courses
06:29 Reason 4: It distracts from the true reasons you should learn Japanese

I’m also amazed at the fact that the JLPT doesn’t test language output. They should change that ASAP in order to make the grading more accurate.

I love how the Japanese learning community unanimously agrees that the JLPT is crap. I have yet to see a single person defend it in any way, shape or form.

I'm happy to defend it. I think it does quite a good job for what it is. I also think expecting a standardized, automatically graded grammar/vocab test to have the utility to test things like output and writing ability is a bit like expecting a hammer to have the utility of a chainsaw.

@@pathologicpicnic editing again because i did some research on my own. you're comparing a test that can cost upwards of $310 and is for what is essentially the language of the world to a $50 test for a niche language used exclusively in one single island country. hmm yes i wonder why theres a difference there. you're unironically doing exactly what i said when i mentioned expecting a hammer to have the utility of a chainsaw.

Another thing with the grammar in the JLPT is that you have to learn how to use a lot of grammar structures that you don’t really need to be able to use to be fluent. There are a lot of grammar structures that I’ve seen in N2 and N1 that I’ve rarely come, if ever, come across when talking to Japanese people or reading novels. Of course it’s useful to be able to recognize and comprehend them, but there is no reason you should need to know the specific sentence construction and word order of every single grammar structure.

Yeah, getting into Japanese after Chinese, I was really surprised that even at the highest level of JLPT there isn't any "writing" section, while in Chinese HSK it starts already from the fourth level (the sixth being the highest). And there isn't anything similar to HSKK (a separate test dedicated to speaking). Also, I was really frustrated that JPLT is held only two times a year (while HSK will be held 11 (!!!) times next year) and the registration period starts too early and finishes too soon, so just because I didn't apply in time for the JPLT held in December I'll have to wait until next July to participate :(

I've done a shit ton of exercuses and drills designed for the Cambridge exams for English over the course of my school years and I can say that this applies to any language test really. Even tho these English ones have the additional writing and speaking parts, they're still not great Imo. And I think the overall grading is pointless. I could easily pass as having a C2 proficiency level since 8th grade and at that point you were only expected to be around A2 or B1. Now I reached such a high level because of good old immersion, our Jack of all trades answer to any question regarding language learning, so I would like to give my opinion on how language tests should present someones level. First, just separate the tests in 2, an inputting side, and an outputting side. And now we can grade an individual on 2 things basically: how well they comprehend the language, and how well can they express themselves in that language. For the first it would be a test on how well one can understand listening and reading, the second tests how well the person can output and shouldn't matter if it's written or spoken. I don't know how good this is but whatever. The one thing they should definitely change is instead of arbitrary letters and numbers, we should have like 2 or 3 levels. First level = able to have basic conversations and have an ok grasp on the language, can talk on simple day to day topics. Level 2 would be full fluency and complete grasp on the language. There could be a level 0 where you can get by with knowing and understanding a limited amount, enough for a tourist for example who would only want to be able to ask where certain places or destinations are, how to get around in a city, asking for stuff at a convenience store or restaurant, extremely basic stuff like this. But even this I would say is useless. I think that a test should just show that you're either on your way to fluency, that being level 1 in my example, or fluent, level 2. We don't need useless n5, n4, a1 or a2 that are basically time and money wasters that don't attribute to anything and won't even help you in at a professional level.

Just a guess but maybe they don't test output because it requires more effort to grade. The JLPT questions are all multiple choice, right? That means it can all be graded automatically by computer.

Yea thats probably why and I get it for the other lower levels but for the N1 which is what many people and companies consider to be the greatest test of Japanese ability it seems pretty crazy to have no output section lol

I'd say someone with at least 70% is about 2x higher than just passing, 80% is about 3x harder than just passing, 90% 5x harder, and a perfect score is 10x harder than just passing in my opinion. Only beginners are just focused on just passing, I think since you already passed it, it would be fun to challenge yourself, I'm also curious to see your improvement and would make an interesting video.

@@oojiman I think you could get 100K+ subs if you got a perfect score as a white guy. I've only ever seen Asian people bragging about a perfect score. Just for an accomplishment in case you had extra time on your hands. A lot of people hate on the JLPT because they can't ever pass it, there's only a few people with a very high Japanese level well beyond N1 that never took it and hate on it, and that's fine, but I thought it was a good accomplishment, and with a perfect score even I would be impressed.

I think you are too focused on just passing the exam, how about for an extra challenge, try to get a higher score. It's like saying you just passed high school with 50%, a huge difference from some honor student going to a top University. It seems only western people are just happy to pass the exam. For Asian people from Korea for example, want a good score, not just to pass, and if trying to get a job in Japan, they gonna actually ask your score.

There is something I've been curious about maybe you can somewhat answer. In terms of jobs, are there specific kinds that are opened up? Or is it much more broad and ambiguous? I've heard N2 can work for helping to find jobs but N1 is the sort of "Overachiever" level that can better secure jobs comparatively. When I hear other KZfaqrs talk about this subject they don't seem to say much beyond what you have. It'd just be nice to be able to better weigh the pros&cons on whether the time/money sink is worth it.

Tbh im not exactly sure since I have no intention atm of ever working at a company in Japan but im sure there would be some jobs that would really prefer you have the N1. It just depends on the industry and company i guess
