In surfing it normally takes years and years of practice to see significant improvements, but that's starting to change. With the advent of wave pools for repetitive style training alongside quality technique input, surfers are now dramatically improving within one or two sessions instead of one or two years.
Although in a broader sense it doesn't really matter which level of surfer you are, knowing whereabouts you sit does help from a progression point of view. It allows us to gauge your current ability and thus recommend a roadmap to better surfing; step by step and with detailed technical cues to get there.

Nice breakdown. I remember crossing some weird threshold in a sesh back in my 20’s. Out of nowhere my take offs into well timed bottom turns into top turns (vertical surfing) became fluent and almost seamless (flow). Even though the waves weren’t great by any means I knew within myself that that was a huge progression milestone. I think you’re spot on: there’s little to no progression ‘database’ to refer to for surfers. Thanks for filling that void Brocky!

Love the video as always! I'm from Uruguay so my surfing is very irregular as the waves here. I would say i'm intermediate when waves are sketchy and advanced when waves are perfect. The unpredictability of a counterwave or a sandbar is fun, but hard to anticipate.

As an intermediate surfer trying to improve , filming myself has been the biggest factor. I put my phone in a tree to record my sessions when I can and even though it’s blurry I can still see what I am improving on and what I need to change. It’s helped me to surf in the pocket more and more and work on my flow. Awesome videos thanks for the motivation.

Hey brocoli!!! Im just having a moment that i overcame the phase i barely catch 2-4 waves every session with my high performance boards. Now i can catch much more waves with less fear. i look for next steps and realize I don’t do much on waves but running away from the pocket. Gonna study with your content. Thanks for putting out great content out there❤ - will look forward to your courses.

I'm 65 and just getting back into surfing. I was an expert riding the North Shore for many years. Working on my flexibility and paddle strength seems key to my progression. Be riding double overhead in a few months. Luckily I have been bodybuilding for the last 35 years, big time strong and low body fat.

1. You surf horizontally instead of vertically 2. Your flow isn't quiet on point 3. The timing of your bottom turn is out of sync 4. You don't know that you're an intermediate surfer

Oh so true! It can be brutal, but once recovered from the video reaction you really start to build well... and fast. Often it leads to doing less and lessens stress on a wave, leading you to surf better. I've done the same on river waves and it works. In music we do the same. "Why am i not sounding like the masters?"... recordings don't lie! Good stuff Kale!

Nice man! I ride the 77 myself, love this board. I set up my camera on the sand (south coast of nsw, no thieves) and then review my 2 hours of surfing hahaha. Thanks for the tips helps a lot. What about tubes though? What would you call a bloke who can't really turn but charge 6/8ft barrels and make them? That's what crazy with surfing too, some get tubes, some do airs, I guess it's like skating too (ramp vs flat). Makes it hard to define a level. Cheers !

Have watched your v videos for a while now since I started surfing, just got my own brand new 8’6 long board 2+1 finn set up. I have another pair of fins for the side bites as well and they’re substantially larger than the ones that came with the board. I’m wondering if there’s a difference and small side fins versus large side fins for a 2+1 set up

Great video, Kale, thank you very much for your insight, congratulations, very original content. I really like the comparison with the other surfers in the pool, especially the more advanced intermediated surfers. I struggle to understand your “surfer delays “pull” analysis at 2:32: I think the surfer on the right did everything right on that bottom turn, but I think he choose the wrong maneuver for that particular section. But as you say, most intermediate surfer don’t know they are intermediate. Hope you find good waves, wherever you are.Cheers!
@KalesBroccoli

He released his back arm into “the pull” too early and thus wasn’t able to use it to get his board going vertical up the wave face

Love your videos but I have a question! NO 1. Too early to be neutral off the bottom of the wave. 2:30 you say about pull early vs. delay. Does "pull it" mean pull the back hand and shoulder rotationally? Or pull what?

I've noticed over the years when I'm trying to fit a vertical turn in a fast moving wave, right after dropping in to an almost closeout and all the wave will allow me to get is one quick turn, I will often bottom turn too early to try to make it there before it breaks and will often get stuck at the top and float out the back...best guess is to paddle harder and drop in earlier?

Nice video Kale, is it possible that a board with too much volume is holding back my progression? I've been surfing for 3 years now and i feel like i'm not improving anymore, i can catch wave easly but i can't surf as i would like to. I feel like my board doesn't responde to my body.. i'm 60kg and riding a 6.4 35lt

Good explanation. Although I feel like, just because you're not surfing vertical and throwing fins out and buckets of spray, you are a intermediate surfer. I think the "intermediate" also goes together with lack of experience. I know guys and girls who have been surfing for 20-30 years that don't surf really vertical, but they surf difficult spots, know where to sit, are aware of their environment, read conditions well and surf the waves good by doing necessary cutbacks and turns to get the most out of the wave. I wouldn't call them intermediate.

Hey Kale, a question for the experienced/ advanced surfers; I notice less experienced surfers have a tendency to get in the way of other surfers, a lot of times this is avoidable. But do advanced surfers still encounter from time to time being the perpetrator of ‘being in the way’?
