I enjoy all your videos, Matt, but what I really appreciate is you value the Word and having it with you. You give thanks to the Lord for your meals and I think that sets a wonderful example for those watching. We can be "manly men" and still realize we need to submit to our God. Keep up the good work. We appreciate it.

I've just moved from Ontario to Vancouver Island, where I indent to up my bush craft game. I've spent 30 years sea kayaking and wilderness camping on Georgian Bay, out on the granite rock on the great lakes - the 30,000 Islands. No soil or tree's to attach things to! I bring collapsible aluminum poles and use rocks. Big wind is a particular challenge, including to self supporting tents. Anyway, now that I am in BC with lots of trees and soil to work with it's a different skill set to master. Your video is excellent. Thank you.

You are doing something some of the other guys forget to do.... go back over the basics. You and the other guys have covered the basics before and those of us who have followed you guys for a while now are with you on your more advanced techniques. Yet, the newer person just getting started, needs to hear a fresh video like this one to make him or her seek more from your channel. Once the newer person gets some base knowledge and curiosity is piqued... that’s when that person subscribes and starts looking at all your previous videos. Well done, Matt.

Matt I've been watching your videos for 2 or 3 years and I don't know how I missed this one. Very good presentation of tarp setups and I love your style. I primarily use a canvas tarp and recently retired my old one that was getting pretty ragged after about 15 years of use and broke down and bought a new one from Coalcracker. Glad to support Ol Dan and he has a great quality item. My favorite (I guess ) setup is the plow point but using a bipod and ridge pole. I'll try to comment more on your videos than I have been but usually I just go to a channel, yours or Shawns, Daves, Jess or another and just let them play. Keep up the good work and have fun out there. BAMADAN BUSHCRAFT plain and simple.

Great job! I’ve got friends that use that A frame when they’re out on scouts or hunting on ranches out by Amarillo, Tx. Reason being is that the wind blows in the panhandle 20-40 mph all day lol. It’s so dry there at times that the county is often under a burn ban due to high risk of prairie fires. So the A frame holds the heat well in the fall and winter. People aren’t aware that it does get cold and snow in the Tx panhandle due to its high table top elevation on the Great Plains.

I'm a beginner moving from the ground up (bivvy -> tarp -> hammock?:) now at the tarp stage obviously... and this is a great video to get strong at the fundamentals so that setting up works 100% of the time without flinching. Together with the ridge line setup video - what you (Matt) have is great SYSTEM from which to do all sorts of variations in the field. The first time doing anything, no matter how obvious, is hard... but your videos make it easy! Thank you, please don't stop:) and God Bless! PS: I've found your content through a recommendation made by Corporals Corner.

A little late here but while maybe a little more complicated (but not much) and largely underrated tarp set up is the Adirondack tarp shelter. It provides 3 sided coverage with a view. The trick is to make sure you know the prevailing winds in your AO in the event a storm rolls through because that front side is open.

Thank you so much for that my friend! I am sad to say I opt for my hammock about 90% of the time now myself simply because of back problems so I truly sympathize. Is there a tie out in the middle of the tarp that could be used to create more room on a plow point configuration? You do a great job of explaining things.
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 3 жыл бұрын
There is indeed Jason. I did a short video on my Facebook page where I utilized that tie out to open it up inside. This particular tarp has 19 tie outs total. It offers a lot of flexibility for different set ups. Thank you so much for you kind words and support!

Why do you choose the Ecotek Hybern8 sleeping pad over other pads? Interesting looking pad, if it was used on the ground would it comfortably support a side sleeper? Also how robust in terms of not getting punctures do you find it? Thanks

Tarred #36 bank line works really well. The knots are called prussic(sp) knots. They can easily slide along a line by grabbing the knot, but if you pull the loop they bind on the line.

Instructor Mercer, You have used Tentsmith Oilskin Tarp, DD Hammocks Tarp and Pathfinder Nylon tarp. Which one would you say is the best for all seasons, durable and least likely to get damaged from flying fire embers? Thanks for the content!
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 2 жыл бұрын
I definitely say that from embers, the Tentsmith Oilskin will be the safest option. The DD and the Pathfinder Tarps are great pieces but they are both synthetic and embers will easily melt holes in those. If I am ground camping in winter right in front of the fire, I will always opt for the oilskin for safety. I hope that helps! Take care.

10 mins in. Why do you put a loop of Paracord when there's already a loop on the tarp
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 2 жыл бұрын
Good question, on this tarp and most, it is hard to insert the loop through the tarp loop as it is a smaller loop. Most importantly, it can be hard to insert stakes through the tarp tie outs so this gives you an easy loop to work with. With the extra paracord, as you stake out the tarp and pull stakes over time, it can wear the loop on the tarp. With that cord there, the wear from friction and dirt etc is all on the paracord.
