That INFIDELS album came out while I was in undergrad school during the early '80s. I listened to it over and over. "Jokerman" still knocked me out when I listen to it, even today

Awesome callouts Tim!! I need to go back and watch that 30th anniversary concert! We watched it on PPV back in the day… it was an EVENT!!! I’m a big fan of infidels… 1st “post-Christian” album. The springtime in NY box set is great!

Good video Tim. Been getting back into Dylan lately so timely for me. “Foot Of Pride” is probably my favorite song of Bob Dylan from the 80s. I remember watching the vc of “Bobfest” over and over(before “vc” meant vinyl community, right?). I was not a Lou Reed fan at that time but that songs lyrics knocked me out and jogged my memory to go back and listen to the BS 1-3 Bob version which of course killed. Part animal human, mafioso, seediness and zealous condemnation in that song. What a song. And Dylan never quite sang like that again. Dare I say, one of his top 10 studio performances to tape. Later on I even made a cd-r of my version of “Infidels” that included “Foot Of Pride” and “Blind Willie McTell” replacing a couple of what I call the Desert Storm era tracks. Now that album would make a super cool release called “Alternate Infidels” imo. Totally agree “God Knows” is a great song also. The Vaughn brothers played on that song I think. The Tell Tale Signs version is even better imo. If you do not have Tell Tale Signs, it is the second best of the BS, again imo. “Born In Time” from Under is my favorite though. Wow, just ethereal and time out of mind trip. “In the lonely night In the blinking stardust of a pale blue light You're comin' through to me in black and white When we were made of dreams” Fantastic. Check the Tell Tale Signs version of that song. Truly amazing. And I think that is why “Under The Red Sky” suffered. Honestly the final studio versions, as good as they are, just do not capture the true magic of the demos. “Tempest” is considered by many to be Dylan’s latter day masterpiece. This album did not hit with me until I saw Dylan live. He did “Scarlet Town” with the stage lit in deep maroon, standing with a lone stage light shining on him as he looked like he had just stepped out of a noir spagehtti western. He orated the song with hand motions that just was incredibly moody and set the scene like the middle of a movie. He performed “Pay In Blood” in this more angry fashion as he really pounded syncopated patterns on the piano. Quite a memory. Bob always has at least couple of amazing moments in every concert. After that show I made a boot of all the songs from the album that I could find the live versions of. And that is how I listen to the album. Live album, new songs… Here is my goofy idea…I always thought it would be really cool if Dylan wrote some songs and then recorded the new songs live in concert, then make that the official release. Many times the live versions just are amazing as compared to the studio. Can you imagine Dylan being Dylan and the only way one could hear the new album is to be at the concert? Then release the live album officially a year later, ha. That would be so Dylan. “Time Out Of Mind”… “Fragments” is a killer killer BS set. I place it in the top 3 or 5. TOOM is another album that has for me became better and better as time goes on. Lots of great songs on that album and I agree “Til I Fell In Love With You” is a nice bluesy vamp that smokes slow and man it just makes me feel cooler than I am, ha. Though the song before it is my favorite. “Tryin To Get To Heaven” Great lyrics. “Ive been wadin through the high muddy waters with the heat riiiiisin in my eyes…” I think “Girl From The Red River Shore” is a song that just doesnt quite fit on TOOM. The lyrical content could be a mid album break from the heaviness, a look back. But the problem I think is the production. It would have to have been reworked by Lanois and Bob. And then that leaves us with a different feel and kind of a different song. Im not sure I would want to lose that original way. But hey we could have had both versions, right? So maybe. Dylan has always been the one steady artist that I can depend on like an old silver city gambler hat. Great topic Tim! Under radar Dylan is always fun to explore 😎👍🏻

Hi John - great insights per usual! I had the Tell Take Signs on CD years ago but I think I only have one disc left due to moving and life chaos! I'm looking for a well priced vinyl set. Love Born In Time -- beautiful song. Cheers, Tim

Infidels - the whole album is amazing! Also love a song called Things Have Changed - not quite under the radar because it won an academy award but because it’s not a Dylan album it’s kind of buried away.

Ten of Spades was the first Bob Dylan "bootleg", way back in the early '70s. Lou Reed singing Foot of Pride doesn't elevate it to classic. The song does not resonate with societal, personal, or generational issues, the way his true classics do. Sadly, Bob hasn't been able to replicate his early success, but not for lack of trying. Only Things Have Changed, and Tweeter and the Monkey Man come close to the quality of the amazing string of songs he put together on Freewheelin', The Times They Are A-Changin', Another Side of, Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline, and Blood on the Tracks, plus the singles George Jackson, Knockin' on Heaven's Door, and Hurricane. No shame in it, creativity is a harsh mistress, and the 105 songs on those 9 albums, and five isolated tracks, will stand as a testament to Bob Dylan's influence on music for a long, long while. Most of his later career, after BotT, is product, not art.

I think "Great White Wonder" from '69 was the first Dylan bootleg. I have to disagree with your assessment as Dylan only churning out "product" after Blood on the Tracks. As cited in the video, Every Grain of Sand is an amazing piece of work. Other great songs of note: Born in Time, Sugar Baby, Hurricane - just to name a few.

I guess anyone can create a site and hold forth on anything these days. He hardly gets past repeating like a broken record that such and such a song is "incredible" and so and so the engineer worked with so and so the producer, and blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.
