@Dutch3DMaster
@Dutch3DMaster 5 жыл бұрын
@@nonexistingvoid I think it hasn't directly something to do with questions being inconvenient for Americans, but some are just absolutely curious about hearing your view on things as a person from the country that the discussion takes place in, also because, sometimes some things come over as absolutely ridiculous when you are "an outsider". For the same reason, when people (American tourists) I helped buy a public transportation ticket when going home from work, some who noticed I am transgender (some don't ask, some do) were anxious to know still very, very carefully asked if I ever had problems with me being transgender (which I understand can be much more of a problem in the US). I must place a sidenote that I am relatively open about it so I don't really care if people ask (it depends how they ask, of course, but still), but they were simply curious to know how much of a difference something like that can be in The Netherlands. Extra sidenote: I realize The Netherlands is not free of problems surrounding this subject, but the devastating amount of negative responses I have read over the years from American teenagers, adults and basically everyone who came out, is not as big over here, though I have heard some absolute horror-stories here as well.

Sinterklaas was the original version and the Dutch people that emigrated to the US took it with them. Because of the mixing with the English, French, Spanish, etc., it got thrown in with Christmas. This made them merge abroad, while they stayed seperate over here. They are two different holidays. PS: coca cola actually took sinterklaas as their inspiration for Santa Claus

Regarding #5: Asking to modify the menu is fine if you prefer something left out. Say a salad is appealing to you but it has anchovies on it which you really detest, then you can ask if it can be left out. Some restaurants have an option on the menu to add extra ingredients, but this is something at a pancake or pizza restaurant if at all. Asking to leave something out is generally okay, they will let you know if it’s an option. Adding or modifying, only if mentioned on the menu.

I'm a Dutch person with a bowel disease, so I got quite some experience with needing modifications in a restaurant. My experience is that it varies wildly. In most places they don't like to just randomly mix stuff up (though, as mentioned, leaving something out is usually fine), but if you mention that you have a medical reason, they'll often try to work something out for you. Then the question is what the options are. In my experience, often (with some exceptions) the rule is: The more expensive the restaurant, the more options you got. Cheap restaurants tend to make a lot premade, which causes a lot to also be premixed. For example, I can't digest plant fibre, but a lot of pastas, soups and ragouts come with vegetables premixed in. So I can't ask for them to be left out, no matter how much they would like to help me. Because of the same reason I can't eat whole wheat bread, but a lot of restaurants try to serve more fibres, causing them to throw out white bread. I obviously can't ask for what's not there. The more expensive restaurants tend to make things fresh per person, per dish, which opens up more options. They often also have a more expensive payment system with more options. Then, basically the whole menu turns into an ingredients list. I can just mix and match however I want. I had a very posh restaurant in a 4 star hotel once send their chef to me, and make up a whole menu on the spot for me. Not that I would ever ask that of a restaurant. They were kind enough to offer that. Best meal I ever had. Then there's knowledge. A colleague of mine has a nightshade allergy and a lactose allergy. Not a lot of people know what things contain nightshade. She has to be on top of what they serve her. Even if they get the dish right, they might garnish it with nightshade containing vegetables. It's hard to be the person to have a fully customised plate, only to have to send it back because it was garnished with nightshade containing vegetables, or because the chef thought she would like a creamy sauce with it. These kind of things can make for a lot of sighs, awkwardness and annoyances, but that really differentiates per restaurant.

Just like Janneke I know roughly who earns more and who earns less. It's handy to know when organising a get together. I know who might need some help paying for transport/food, who owns a car, who can maybe chip in a bit more for the other, etc. But I wouldn't demand anything from anyone, and I don't need to know exact numbers. The problem with 'How are you ?' is that Americans tend to say it as a greeting. While it is considered an actual question and conversation starter in the Netherlands. So it is kind of akward if it is said as a greeting without the intention to have a conversation. I live in Amsterdam, and I am okay with questions about coffeeshops. But if the person asking doesn't look like a smoker, I would probably directly ask them with an akward smile if it is for weed or coffee. The first place where it was '"allowed" to sell weed was a tea/coffee house. They were given a pass becausse they did not sell any harddrugs. And the name stuck. In general it is kind of not done to give waiters a hard time by nitpicking. Most would be okay with making small modifications. But it will really stress them out. It is better to just be nice and keep it easy for them. We are modest people.

Jose Peters usually they respond with “Fine. And you?” ... and the response to that is something along the lines of “Good”. It’s just considered a polite greeting. Same thing in the UK. Ages ago I studied in the UK for a year and I have to admit it took me several weeks to realise they didn’t actually want a real answer to that question lol ... as a Dutch person I don’t like this way of greeting all 😁 ... if you don’t want a real response ... don’t ask me at all ... wat een gedoe hè?

Honestly, I got the question about Black Pete one time from American tourists and I told them that the only thing you seem to hear in the media are the two extremes, people who are in favor of keeping Black Pete as it is, and the people who are in favor of change. Personally, I belong to neither of them and are in the group that I perceive to be the middle ground of the two which either doesn't care or wants the whole idiocracy around it to stop because it's taking over a children's party/tradition and it's the nuance and impossibility of people to listen to each other that is slowly driving a huge wedge between seemingly large groups of people. And about questions, it might differ from person to person, but, one I have had a couple of times when helping American tourists out buying a public transportation ticket when going home from work is, after realizing I am transgender: "Aren't you afraid to get murdered or get in trouble?" And, though The Netherlands is far from trouble-free concerning this subject, for the most part, people will usually not care all that much simply for the atmosphere being absolutely different here concerning this subject.

In my opinion it doesn't really matter in the Netherlands which skin colour someone has. In the USA it is an issue, that's why there is a lot of political correctness around skin colours. Black facing was never a thing in the Netherlands, until some people got aware of that phenomenon. Then it started here too. Lots of coloured people that were raised in the Netherlands didn't care about Zwarte Piet, they even dressed up their kids, and painted their faces for the celebration of the holiday. Recently there seems to be an urge for that same (false) political correctness in our country. Racism and discrimination are wrong, but i still cannot understand any relation to Zwarte Piet.

Congrats on your new apartment! 🥂 You nailed those questions. Most Dutch people don't like those. I myself have always been quite open when it comes to the salary question and I find it weird that everyone's so uptight about it. What's the big deal? When it comes to the 'How are you?' I guess that is awkward because we tend to answer every question so honestly and direct. So when a stranger asks it, you're kinda like 'Ehh, why should I tell you?' 😁

Concerning Zwarte Piet: the character originally represented evil, the devil and the reason he was black was because of the soot from the fires in hell. In time, the character turned into Zwarte Piet, jolly companion of Sinterklaas, but originally his colour had nothing to do with race... Personally, I never associated Zwarte Piet with any of my black fellow-citizens or friends growing up. I'm sorry if people feel offended by this dutch "tradition"

@Péé Déé because people feel offended by it. When people just stayed in their own cultures, this would not have been a problem. But since people come all around the world and mix. All kinds of traditions are under fire because someone does not like it.

So interesting :) As a Dutch person: 1: Alles goed? Hoe gaat het? Hoe gaat het met je? Varying degrees of asking how someone's doing, it's basically: What's up? How are you? How are you doing? These question have their time and place and depend on the relationship. You wouldn't ask a stranger how they're doing, do you really care? 2: The nearest coffeeshop. You explained the wording, when Americans ask for a coffeeshop they mean coffee, a cafe is a bar. But I'd like to add on that's it's probably most likely that a foreigner is asking for a coffeeshop where they sell weed, and it's a bit annoying and presumptuous to ask someone. Most Dutch people don't smoke weed nor do they give a fuck, they might not know. Just google lol. 3: What's your salary? Absolutely do not ask, it's very rude to ask about someone's financial situation. The only person I talk to about this is a foreigner and we've grown accustomed to talk about money a bit, but generally speaking it's just straight up rude. I don't know what any of my family members earn, that's not something we discuss. 4: Bit politically charged, I'd say Dutch people are more open to discussion on political issues than Americans are. The majority of Dutch people consider it a tradition that doesn't relate to black people (even if that's where it comes from). Most black Dutch people also don't mind Zwarte Piet. It's a small minority, mostly made up of white Dutch people, that feel the need to ban it. 5: Modifying is very uncommon, only leave out an ingredient that your allergic to or absolutely can't stand. If I see a course I'd like but it has some ingredients I don't like, I'll just pick something else. I think the only rude thing is to ask about someone's salary out of all of these :) Absolutely not done. Then modifying a meal is a bit annoying, as you don't have staff that's working for tips, so they're not wanting to go the extra mile. The other one's are fine just use common sense ;)

About number 5: you can definitely ask a waiter if your specific dish can be altered a bit. I have been working as a waitress for over 7 years now, in over 3 restaurants. If you want (for instance) a specific pizza but it has olives on it and you just don't like that, you can ask the waiter to leave it out or replace it with some lettuce for example. It's no big deal. However, if you are going to alter the whole dish up to a point where it doesn't even "look" like the original, that's a whole different thing. So I guess it kind of depends on how much modifications you want to have on the dish. Also for the money/salary thing I guess it kind of depends how you were raised in the Netherlands, because some people I know don't like to talk about it but other people don't have a problem with it and are very open about those kind of things.

Very spot on .... Especially the last one (modifying the menu) I found very akward when having American friends over. "uhhh ... sorry ... uhhh we don't tell the cook to change his recipe! If you don't like his recipes, then don't eat here.." Also funny, when my American guest were quite smitten with the waitress. They wanted to tip her specially, but were confused when she left when we were still dining (her shift was over). I had to explain to them that Dutch waiters are not nice for an extra tip, not tip driven, because we have minimum wages. All tips go in a jar and is divided among all waiters. "Ohhhh" Love your vids! I visit once in a while. I am from Rotterdam.

The name coffeeshop is because many people love coffee with a cigarette in the early days and some people still. Because of the toleration policy weed is still some kind of forbidden in the Netherlands. So that's why instead of saying weedshops we say coffeeshops to those places. Little bit like a law issue I think. The coffee in the coffeeshops is mostly very good. Like the same what you will get in a café or restaurant. they use mostly piston machines and Dutch people love coffee, we are in the top 3 coffee consumers of the world.

I agree with your second third and fourth question Joey, but I use the first one multiple times each day. We just respond with "alles goed! en met jou"? The answer we expect to then get is "goed". It only gets weird when someone says I am not doing well :o then run for the hills! But in general if you do not know someone you will get the resonse "(alles) goed"! So I think the stigma is more on saying that you ain't doing well rather then asking the question. Lastly I also don't have an issue with your last question. It is common when, for example, you order a burger to tell them to hold the lettuce or tomato or with extra cheese or whatever. It is just not common to completely alter the dish like turn a penne carbonara into a lasagna but yeah think that is the same wherever you go :) Keep up the good work! Love watching your video's especially since my longterm boyfriend is an expat living in Holland aswell! We hope to get his passport this year!

1. I only say hello or nod. If I come across a person more then once I might ask them how they are doing. Like when walking the dog you come across the same person per day or per week and you get kinda familiar with them (in my case) and then we start a conversation, so also asking how they are doing 2. Never had a problem with asking for a coffeeshop to be honest. But I live in Zuid Limburg and maybe there are coffeeshops here but I haven't come across one 🤷‍♀️ 3. Yeah.. Asking about salary... Maybe with good friends or best friends but normally I also don't ask about someone's salary.. It is not my business and really don't care... I don't know.. Yeah I know my parents said when I was young that it is not nice to ask about that. Maybe because we also don't like people who brag about their stuff of so that you yourself don't get the feeling you are less.. Because you're not living the way the others are living or making money... (??) 4. Sinterklaas and Christmas are 2 different holidays. And yes.. Oh boy.. Black Pete... Heavy subject here 5. Hmm you can modify menus I believe. I did this several times in my life 🤣 🤨🤫

So I really recognise that they think it is really normal to modify a dish (I had a good laugh about your comment),as well they try to get a refill for tea, ask what was taking so long for a oven "tosti"to complete (after getting it within 10 minutes), or can't stop making silly jokes etc. Can you maybe make a video on what not to do at a restaurant? I like how you tried to stay as neutral as possible on the Zwarte Piet issue, I get that as an American it's something really really strange to see. In the Netherlands, the latest stats show that 85% of the Dutch black community like Zwarte piet, and around 5-7% dislike it and the rest doesn't have an opinion. I think the reason why the Zwarte Piet issue became big is because Americans saw it as blackface, which is something the Netherlands never had. Its mainly a cultural issue. I'm personally more of a Christmas person, but people should dress up as black pete if they want, and if they don't want that it's fine. I don't like it when people say that people can't dress up a certain way. Like last year there was a black woman who was told she couldn't play black pete, because of her skin color, and that was coming from an organization that is anti-piet, which was pretty damn racsit. I always look at it as live and let live. P.S. when you're going to make the Zwarte Piet video, just make sure you don't come across condescending. Pro or Anti- piet it doesn't matter, just don't push either way too hard, I've seen the anger of Dutch Online people and that's never fun. I think it's similar with Thankgiving, if you push to hard against it, you get every American wanting to jump you xD Otherwise hide in a bunker :p

Talking about how much money we make isn't so much a taboo, it's more that we don't value our salaries that much. As long as we're enjoying our jobs and making the money we're worth, it's simply not a worthy conversation topic. I do talk about how much I make with friends and colleagues, to make sure I am getting paid the right amount ;) Our self worth however, does not depend on our salaries or our possessions (and how much we've spent on those). We prefer to show off things we got for very little money, e.g. "Oh you like this shirt? Thanks, I got it on sale for only 5 euros!" :')

I modify the menu every time, but just leaving things out! It is considered kind of rude to ask other sauces than the ones offered to the table. An american friend of mine asked ketchup in every restaurant he went and drowned his meat in it also. And if they did not bring they right brand he even suggested they go and get a bottle at a local store. But leaving things out or having specific diet wishes are quite all right here. Do not try that in France though.....

I’m a waitress and whenever someone ask for an “uitzondering” as we call it the chef will get mad at me for it! Maby another question we don’t like is “So Dutch is just like German right?” Because it isn’t and then you’ll have to explain why. Super fun video Joey I enjoyed it a lot!

About the 3rd one, there is a difference. Teens and young adults ask it all the time. But the adults think its weird. Idk why they think that, but it is.
