Olympic lift variations are great exercises that athletes should learn and utilize in their strength training programs for developing speed and power. Here are five reasons why athletes should incorporate Olympic lifting into their strength and conditioning workouts.

I'm also a big fan of blocks as well. They remove the counter movement in addition to removing the 1st pull. Can't ever go wrong with the OLY lifts.

Just started getting into olympic lifts. Hoping to get stronger with power cleans by early Dec. I want to see how much it can improve my 60m. My best was in March of last year of 7.26 so hoping to get in the 7.1s this winter.

I love Olympic lifts. I gotta work on my overhead stuff though.

I went away from Olympic lifts for a few years after college track and I’m slowly coming back to them. Something I’ve been enjoying is super setting an Olympic lift with a plyometric exercise. I feel like I get the global stimulus from the Olympic lift, but I get a “more specific” stimulus from the plyometric. Who knows if it works, but it certainly feels good.

i have nothing to say. You already did it. as always very good explanation. Do you have tried single leg hang cleans/high pulls? I think they work.

Also Do you only quarter squat seasonal or year round?

if i’m skinny athlete should i be working on hypertrophy to build a muscle foundation before i do olympic lifts or would it be fine to start doing athletic training now?

I would say you should do the power/hang power versions of oly lifts to get started. The problem with going straight into the standard strength movements (squat bench deadlift) is that if you push them too hard you end up developing much more strength than speed. If you're disciplined enough then you can do both oly and strength movements but remember your strength movements need to be done fast not slow and grindy like a powerlifter. Hope that helps.

My son has run 10.75 without them. I`ve seen others on youtube doing these lifts and struggle to break 11 then try to lift even more because they think that`s the problem (they don`t even lay off weights in season). I can`t say whether they work or not but me and my son decided to start doing the minimum possible to improve and add things later. If they make him faster we keep them if they don`t we drop it and quick. He went from 11.7 to 10.7 just sprinting and maturing last season. This winter we are deadlifting and squatting. He just moves weights "quick" I`m pretty sure he`ll go under 10.5 next season basically from just maturing.

You don’t have to do heavy Olympic lifts at a young age, learning the movement and technique is probably more beneficial the younger ages. You also don’t have to technically execute them like an Olympic weightlifter if you’re only using it to enhance performance for the sprints. According to Boo Schexnayder there’s not a training modality out there that works and challenges the sequencing of hip, knee, ankle, lower body and upperbody. It develops the skill to fire all that as one whole complex movement. The Olympic lift complex works strength as you pull bar off the floor slower, then as it speeds up it’s power and when you catch it becomes reactive. These are all key ingredients for success in sprints, jumps and throws. The athletes you see doing them all year round with no improvement they’re probably not balancing what they’re doing in the weight room and on the track correctly.

They're just another tool in the tool box. You can still get faster without them. I will say light Olympic lifts are my go-to in season as they're a great way to maintain strength without being overly fatiguing. As long as you only do them once a week and don't go super heavy during competition season, you shouldn't burn out.

@@kapoioBCS yes I do. What I'm saying is. Use them when and if necessary. If I'd let others coach my son he'd probably be doing these already when they are not needed to improve him. Some coaches throw 10 things at sprinters in the hope something will work, instead of doing one thing at a time to see what actually works and what doesn't. Patience is a virtue

I don’t think they transfer to sprinting. It doesn’t make “explosiveness” - it is slow compared to sprinting and doesn’t mimic any sprinting movements. You get “explosive” through sprinting. It doesn’t cause muscle growth (you don’t go to failure and feel any real burn just fatigue). You need to spend a ton of time to perfect the technique. I don’t get the benefits, it seems to me it’s just a lot of bro science and random science talk to try to make it sound good. You use momentum to move the bar
