Same, I started welding more than a decade ago. Have always worn the 3m half respirator under my mask. Let those knuckle heads breathe in the ozone, manganese, chromium, zinc and other crap.

Does the 2097 have good protection against organic vapors or is it just OV relief. I had a P100 with OV relief I would wear and I’d still get headaches after work welding galvanized and stainless a lot not to mention antispatter spray and what not. Just upgraded to an ellipse p100/organic vapors and gases. Can’t smell anything anymore and I go home headache free. I’m probably still fucked from the four years of improper respiratory protection. Long story short make sure you’re protected from vapors and gases too.

I found a Miller half face respirator at a welding supply store. Fits nicely under my hood. The 3M ones from Home Depot were too bulky to lower the hood while wearing them

I’ve literally got arthritic discs in my neck from wearing a 3M speedglas. Things heavy. Gonna put in a request with my employer for a lighter optrel filtered setup or something.

Neuromuscular damage and lung cancer are a lot costlier. $2K ain't no hill for a stepper if you're a qualified welder.

@@toterola451 I'm perfectly fine welding stick out in the field and having the wind blow away the fumes and using the miller respirator for dual shield shop welding. Yes, your correct, your health is more important, but we also have to consider the rise of capitalism and the introduction of fear these company's bring to blue collar workers. COVID was a prime example, if you can make someone feel unsafe unless they buy this and that in order to feel better about themselves, they most certainly will. As an engineer and structural steel contractor, if I've learned anything about college, its the brainwashing and intimidation large corporations bring on working families that sustain this country.

Capitalism is the system we're stuck with. If the Capitalists were behind filtered air for welding hoods, they'd figure out a way for everyone to be required to wear them. Nobody said anything about working inside or outside, except the guy who did this excellent video. I suspect that most anyone knows that it's safer, as far as one's respiratory health, to weld outside. If you have to weld in close quarters, it's ALWAYS better to wear a respirator. I come from coal mining and mineral extraction country. Watching people die from black lung, silicosis, strange cancers, neuromuscular failure, and other ungodly shit because they didn't have proper PPE was a fact of life growing up and working in the skilled trades. I don't want these young people to have to play Russian roulette with their health the way my cohort had to.

Yeah, PAPR hoods range anywhere from $1400 to $2500. It's a good investment, especially if you're planning to make a long career out of welding.

I have the 3m 9100mp. Had it since 2014 works grate. It's also a great advantage when it's hot outside, as the mask provides comfortable cooling

@@Mrkermit261 Nonsense I use my 3m 9100mp everywhere. Inside boilers outside on buildings inside the workshop, but have experienced that it has been too cramped a couple of times. And then I have used a regular p3 mask

That sounds like a great option.

I used that quick latch respirator for a couple of years and I can say it's probably the best respirator out there! The latch makes it easy to drop down real quick and the exhaust is facing the bottom so it never fogged up my hood.

3M. 6200/6300 series with any filter. For powder (toner for laser printers) I use base 603, filter 5911/5925/5935, holder 501.

There are different safety regulations over here but trying to help people avoid fumes as much as possible.

Money, ignorance. Not necessarily in order. I’m a hobbyist welder, I can’t afford to drop that kind of cash on a PAPR. While I get that its cheaper in the long run, I have more important financial obligations first, keeping the wolves away.
