Roo is back with yet another 8-Bit Gem... but not one you might expect. Back to the Future on the NES has a horrible reputation, as well as the company that released it -- LJN. But is that criticism fair? Well, considering it's the subject of this episode, you can guess as to what Roo thinks. Find out way more than you ever wanted to about this maligned game on today's episode!
Big thanks to Shane from Rerez for the thumbnail! - / rereztv

I think a lot of the hatred for the game was also the style of the game compared to what a typical NES game is. It's quite alien to console gamers. Beam Software were previously known as Melbourne House and would often be commissioned by British publishers to make games based on movie licenses, there was a trend in the UK that movie licenses would be more multi level mini games, so it would tie in closer to scenes from the actual movie. So years of doing that, obviously led beam to make a similar game, it was in their heritage. Same with Back to the Future II & III, it's very much like old UK platformers like Jet Set Willy, Technician Ted Etc. The NES BTTF is a lot more fun than Electric Dreams' version of the game which is closer to the movie, but also makes for a very boring game too.

ClanOfTheGrayWolf Thanks! I got to add, Beam were pretty inconsistent with quality too though. They made some gems like Super Smash TV on the SNES, but some absolute shite like their pitched sequel to Punch-Out!! Power Punch II. Say, mind if I PM you too dude? Not spoken in aaaggeesss :D Oh, and great episode Sir, I've really missed your videos!!!

THANK YOU! It's great to see a video like this that explains more about the history, the game, LJN company, and developers Beam Software behind this infamous title! I have always liked this game, sure it can be unfair at times and wouldn't make a Top 100 NES games list (go figure), but there is enough to give it its chance. Plus, like any video game, its subjective, some will like it, some will hate it, in the end, its a video like this that highlights aspects about the game to shun away unnecessary or uneducated hate. But of course, nothing gets me more giddy then when you talked about the music, just hearing the composer/arranger and programmers name is what I love to hear in such detail. And much like how I am an NES music enthusiast, I will say I enjoy the tracks, even at there high tempo! :)

If Beam is an Australian company, my guess is that the music is at the right speed, but since Australia runs PAL systems, it's 50mhZ as oppose to your 60mhZ NTSC copy. It may have never been adjusted to sound correct for NTSC systems.
@ProtosMerkabah
@ProtosMerkabah 10 жыл бұрын
There is a refresh rate difference between the systems, however it was rather rare that the refresh rate actually affected the game play speed. Some games like Sonic the Hedgehog did have a speed difference, but the later games (Sonic 3 and Knuckles) compensated to run at the same speed regardless of refresh rate.
@Deathgaze1
@Deathgaze1 10 жыл бұрын
As an Aussie myself I experience many inferior versions of games. They're games like, Mega Man for instance. Which the gameplay was corrected to play the same as the NTSC counterpart, but they never bothered speeding the sound up for us. If this is the case, I can't see why it can't work the opposite way around for PAL to NTSC. It's just an educated guess on my part, I'm not saying my theory is correct.
@14catorce
@14catorce 10 жыл бұрын
Australian and European developers used to make their games optimized for the NTSC market back then, even if they were programing in PAL areas. It really was to avoid paying royalties.

Hey Roo, Just a thought here.. (and please feel free to correct me if I might be wrong but my technical knowledge is limited) but due the fact that NES systems in Australia run at 50hz PAL is it possible that the music was running as intended on PAL systems but inadvertently sped up when converted to ntsc?

I love that xx-Bit Gems is the opposite of all the 'Angry' video game reviewers in the KZfaqs. Since when has anger = comedy? It can definitely be used to supplement comedy, but gets old if that's the only note used throughout. Meh... I always enjoy the slower paced, more thoughtful humor and insight of this series. Also, was this one recorded on some sort of tape instead of digital format? Especially artifact-y compared to past videos.

I think it both is and isn't. His choice to make a video knowing it would wouldn't be believed as genuine and then releasing it on April Fools day is the joke. However, Roo does like this game, furthering said joke. Pat and Ian have spoken about Roo actually liking this game during their NES marathon when Roo challenged Pat to beat Lou's Cafe. A more practical answer as to why Marty had a black shirt probably has to do with sprite/color limitations, as NES sprites support only three + transparency. To me it seems Marty's sprite is already made out of two or more sprites laid on top of one another, much like how they made Mega Man's face in the NES titles (I can count four + transparency on Marty's sprite). Thus adding red to the mix may have needed some additional work. On top of that, because it's a vertically scrolling STG affair, you may want to keep the sprite count low to avoid flickering.
