@@pkuudsk9927 Same here although semi retired..., but even so I have this one friend who refuses to listen, He needed a 4x4 I advised him to look at Toyota Landcruisers, he ends up buying a Range rover.... Keeps me busy turning wrenches though. Same friend wants an older (early mid 90ties) luxury car/land yacht, I told him to look at Mercedes S class or Lexus (we are in Europe, so more limited choice), but he decided he knows better and bought a Jaguar XJ8. Honestly I think we have all been there. I had a kid bring a mid 80's Honda in for safety and this thing was fresh paint rims tires and looked great. Once on the hoist it almost folded in half. Why would anyone spend good money and time fixing the upper half of a shell and try to use spray foam ,undercoating to hold the bottom half together. I will never know.

I drove maybe half an hour to look at a Grand Marquis that was supposed to only need a new transmission. Get there, and every interior panel has broken clips, the windshield is cracked, the seats are ripped, and the engine has a rod knock so bad it almost stalled just revving in park.

I found and bought two identical first gen Cummins trucks by just knocking on the door of a farmer who just quit using them. One was parked running and the other was a complete parts truck for the other. They had about the same mileage but were solid and I picked them up for 500 a piece after he dropped the price by half. I knew at that price and how hearty these trucks are I wouldn’t have to spend a whole lot just to make the one a reliable driver. One of my best buys for sure.

All great advice, especially: 1) keeping +/- 75% of the purchase price in one pocket, and the remainder in the other, and 2) bringing a friend (way, way, way too many sketchballs out there). Both are overlooked parts of the buying process which can prove helpful, to say the least. I bring a set of plastic ramps, flashlight, and a piece of cardboard with me when I look at a car so that I can put the car in the air enough to look at the underbody while lying on the cardboard, even if it's parked on dirt, mud, etc. If the seller gets flinchy when I explain that I'd like to look at the underbody, I (respectfully) walk away. The only other tip I'd add is to assume that any used car you're looking at, even one which appears to be in good shape based on an inspection, will need $500.00 worth of work just to be careful. Rarely do people sell something that doesn't need at least a little work. So, if you're willing to pay the full price, fine. But ask yourself if you'd pay the full price plus $500.00 and think a bit about the answer. I don't talk numbers or make offers until I've seen a vehicle in person, but that seems to be growing less and less common for whatever reason.

This is a good general guide. A couple of things that I like to do: -I always bring a flash light and if it at all possible I'll bring a jack too. That way I can lift the car enough (generally not off the ground, but enough to unload the suspension at a corner) to at least spot major defects (rust, ripped CV boots, big leaks, etc). If you do find something, break out your phone and take a picture of it and show the owner. Most people don't have any clue about their car and if you can show them what you're talking about they will see you're not just trying to rob them. -I just flat out ask them what is wrong with the car. Nobody has told me everything yet, but a lot of people have told me 70-80%. A handful have straight out lied to me, but it's really hasn't been that common. -Once I've examined the car and the condition, I simply ask the owner "how much will take for the car?". Only one guy, who was advertising his car at about 2/3 market value already, has ever asked for the full price and on average I'd say I've gotten the cars for about 20% off with at least 10% coming off just by asking the question. One thing Rich suggested that I really don't like is the "I only have this much money" trick. I had a guy do this to me as a seller and it just pissed me off. If you've already talked about the price and condition, don't invent a fake financial problem to try to get a better price. Just offer what you want to pay and take it or leave it. Lying isn't going to earn you any favor with anyone and pretending to be a hapless moron that shows up to buy something with no money isn't going to reduce the value of the car.

I totally agree. As a guy who’s sold many MANY vehicles. Showing up without all the money makes me Very irritated. Much rather someone haggle on the price instead of playing that I am broke card. I am more inclined to drop the price in that situation, definitely not in the I don’t have enough money situation

1) Don't ever look at a vehicle at night or in low light. 2) Always be prepared to walk away. If the car is exactly what you want but its off on price respectfully state your limits, thank the seller for their time and walk away. But be sure to leave your contact info and tell the seller if you change your mind call you. You'll be surprised how often they'll call you back in a few days - sometimes later the same day! It's all about respect in my opinion. 3) If the seller is being disrespectful DON'T DO BUSINESS with someone like that. On the same topic don't be a dick and talk mad shit about their car. At the end of the day I want a fair price so both parties walk away satisfied.

#2 is the big #1 bro, regardless how much you want the car / truck you have to be prepared to walk away, so many people get excited once they see the vehicle they leave themselves with pants firmly round ankles ready to be dry bummed by the seller. Good comment though, I agree with everything you said.

We bought a 2000 Chevy Silverado 4.3L, 5 years ago for $900 it had around 350,000k on it, it had all the typical issues nothing major throughout the 5 years of owning it all we did was typical maintenance. For a lightweight truck with the V6 it definitely did very good, we hauled many different things with this truck well over its capacity, full water tanks in the bed and even a 30-foot Winnebago. At the end, it had around 550,000k on it, when it was scrap it was still able to drive under its own power to the scrap yard.

One thing ive learned in buying a used car ( ive purchased over 60 cars in my lifetime) is to get carfax or find out how many owner's the cars had and which state(s) its spent its life in. Almost pulled the trigger and purchased a 3 owner Nissan Sentra SER years ago but then found out it was a NY car most of its life. Lots of idle, stop n go driving. So the 100k mile that was on the odometer was more like or equal to 200k. Thats how i looked at it. Purchased few cars for cheap not running also. A few turned out to be duds. Id say always here em run. Great video Deboss.

I just sold my brothers car. It was an older car (2005), was from the south and was spotless underneath. I went through the car from top to bottom and put $1000 of parts into it the week before to make it 100% for him. He then decided to sell it for some dumb reason. The first buyer after seeing the car and hearing the story thought it was to good to be true and passed on it. The actual buyer got a $2500 rust free car that was fully functional that will last them a LONG time.

One thing I do every time I buy a used car is to test drive a few of the same model/year/mileage. This will give you a great indication if the car was properly maintained or not as it will give you something to compare it to. In 2002, I was shopping for a "used" car for my wife. At the time I was driving a 10 years old 1992 Honda Accord with over 250k kms. I was looking at a 4 years old 1998 Nissan Maxima with 80k kms. The first one I tried was driving so poorly. It was stiff but also loose on every bumps on the road and felt much worse than my Accord (which in terms of the car itself was a notch below the Maxima when new). I thought this could be due to the fact it was the SE (sport model with stiffer suspension). I tried 3 more (also SE versions) and they all drove significantly better than the 1st one. Having something to compare to is invaluable. Also get the VIN # and call a dealership. If the car was maintained at the dealer, they will be able to give you a history of the maintenance done on it.

I personally hate when people start negotiating the price before they have even come to look at the vehicle. When it does happen and I have agreed to a lower price I won't move an cent more when they actually do come to look, as far as I'm concerned they already used there negotiating chance prior to seeing the vehicle.
@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 5 жыл бұрын
I think that's one of the things they got right in the video. I have to say that it depends on how far the vehicle is away from me and how far over priced it is. If I have to drive 2 hours to see it and I know you're 20% over the market before even thinking about the condition, we're going to have that conversation on the phone first. It's cool if you don't want to come off the price, but then I'm not going to waste time coming to look at it. Generally speaking, I don't like to talk price until I'm there in person, but exceptions do apply.

I live rural at the end of some nasty roads north of Kingston and commute to Mississauga, small hole in the pan presumably from a bottom out, oil evacuated, number 5 rod bearing grabbed the crank (ironically, I bought the car with a bad pressure sender or gauge, but didn't bother to fix it because i actually check the stick regularly .. and really, what's the chance of a 4.6 modular suddenly dropping pressure?) . Meh, picked up an "07 CVPI for $3000. (Figured if I bought the same, that a parts car on hand doesn't hurt.). Went a hundred miles until the trans failed. Ironically, the '04 trans isn't compatible with the '07. I recall noting at the dealer that the trans fluid appeared brand new. Figured that the cops had just maintained it well. As it turns out, after puling the trans - the yellow grease pencil mark of doom on the converter. They'd tossed a wrecker trans in - the fluid was new because it had just been filled! I swear, no matter how many years you've been doing this .. if you don't posses the scumbag mind, you're going to take it from the rear. No one sells a car they're happy with. the trick is to figure out why they're unhappy. Might be the average Joe middle manager paying dealer labour prices that balks at the price of a $175K timing belt interval that a wrench savvy buyer can manage in a weekend for a hundred bucks and change. Might be just annoyances - radio and power windows have shit the bed. In the end .. after 40 years - I've come to the conclusion that there is no formula to prevent the buyer from having to wipe chum from their butt cheeks. Hell, even when buying new. Remember all those suckers that bought decidedly expensive new Volvos with a 100 percent failure rate of the AW 55-50 transmissions? It's just a dice roll in my opinion.

Looking at a '99 v6 Mustang convertible. They have no plates on it so I can't test drive. Engine sounds okay, the oil was very black however. Body looks good, didn't see any rust. They don't seem very keen on my having a mechanic come and get it and take it in to look it over, and the mechanic doesn't sound like he's going to do that exhaustive an examination. The asking price was $5k, they will take $4300, has safety, new headlights but needs tires (they're only 2013 but they have tire rot). Go forward or quit? I'm in SW Ontario btw. If I sound scared I am, last two cars I've owned (both FCA products) have been disasters that have cost me thousands. Don't want to make the same mistake. Just need the car for a few years, a few months of the year).

I have been buying used cars since I was 15 in 1960. never got stung badly. I always got a good deal. many times the seller thought the car was worse than it really was. I mean buying cars for 20 bucks to less than a thousand. Yes, there are good cheap vehicles to be had. best deal ever was a 77 fj40 bought for 3000 sold for 6000 2 years later. I agree with much of your video but there is way more to watch for. including a fake title. here in colorado you go to the state highway patrol office and run the vin number to see if its stolen.

Yes Check the title. Is it correct. Does it have the sellers name on it. If not, what is their excuse. Is it a flipper sale.

The only thing I would add is that if you live in an area that uses a lot of salt on the roads and destroys the cars, consider taking a weekend and going South to pick up a car. Even though I live in Ohio, I bought my OBS Ford from Georgia, and my wife's SUV from North Carolina. Does it cost you a little to go look at them, yes, but if it lets you extend the service life of the vehicle by a couple years (or more if you take care of it) what is the added expense of a couple days and a couple hundred bucks in the long run? Plus, you can often get a good deal on something that may be cosmetically imperfect or need basic repairs, but is structurally sound. My experience has been that I can fix a lot of mechanical issues for far less than the price of even basic body work.

Don't care for the money trick personally... I try to put myself in the seller's shoes to some extent. Don't buy if the engine is warm when you show up. It can be awkward to squirm around under the car in someone's gravel driveway while they watch you; I like to pull into a vacant parking lot on my test drive and give it another look without the pressure. Also good to look for leaks on pavement. I had someone buy a car from me for full price and he never even looked underneath (MI)... I couldn't believe it. I knew the underbody was in excellent shape, but he lucked out.

Had a guy buy the worst trailer on craigslist from me last summer and didn't even glance an eye to the bent axle I told him about... Didn't even haggle. Full asking price. Some people just have their own thing going on and I'm not going to be the fool to keep myself from more money if they're going to just hand it over.

I've been doing this with Ford Escorts for years, but more like $1000 initial buy in... That's one thing I'll say about that overall approach. If you've going to buy REALLY cheap cars, find a platform that you like and stick with it. That way your spare parts and knowledge inventory will continue to grow even if the cars themselves get traded out for better versions of themselves. Parts of the first Escort are now on the 3rd one...

my horror story is I bought the first vehicle that I've looked at ). And it was used as a rental one, was used in Uber. 2017 Corolla with 90k miles in it. Actually a car is pretty decent, well loaded (LE trim) and has almost no issues. One thing to mention - check that seller provides all keys, because to make another one could cost a couple hundreds. For my example that's just a key 20$ on Ebay + cut + reprogram. Fortunately I can add a chip to Toyota by myself, for free.

ALSO never ever ever buy an engine that you didn't hear start up in the cold. A warm engine can hide manifold leaks, vacuum leaks, cold start problems, piston slap, valve lash...lots of shit. If you're going somewhere to check a vehicle out make sure it hasn't been started.

Finding a good 99-07 classic Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra with under 170,000 miles for about $6000 is what I would get. Rust might be a problem, along with some other minor issues, but the Vortec motors are bulletproof pretty much.

3 things to help: 1. Only take cash for your car. The problem with cashier checks is they can be faked easily or the buyer can pull the check and you wont get paid, and he can run off with your car. 2. Be honest! If you know you car needs work then tell them and don't forget to include what you have done recently, especially big ticket items like tires, suspensions parts, and drivetrain. 3. Avoid meeting at your house. Try to meet some where close to your house if the vehicle is in running condition. Some people will use a fake buy experience to scope out your place and see what you have that's valuable and come back later. These sound stupid and somewhat common sense, but trust me i have seen these happen to people first hand and i would hate for anyone else to get screwed over or even robbed.
