"Let's design a new front end", like let's go to the corner for a beer. Man, I love Mike's enthusiasm for just jumping right in and not worring about the elbow work or the hours. I give him a lot credit and admire the passion for doing it right no matter what the effort involved.

As a builder of Hot Rods, I can relate to the sickening experience that you have had with that steering shaft parting and the resulting damage to the front end. I had a front brake caliper mount bolt disappear allowing the other bolt to snap off, causing the wheel to lock up, which destroyed the wheel and suspension components. I too placed my steering rack in front after reversing the spindles. This worked fine except for messing up the Ackerman geometry and allowing tire scrub in turns. I had to move the steering arm eyelets outward as close to the wheels as possible to make a correction. Thanks for sharing your build.

That must have been scary and satisfying at the same time to chop it. Started to follow your channel with this build, looks like we've made a full circle. Anyway, looks great and I'm looking forward to 2022. Finally got a garage of my own, am moving in this week and starting my build slowly. Asked a while a go if I should get that car in one of your instagram Q&As and I did after all. Will be my first project and this is going to be tons of experience. Thanks for being an inspiration.

You can adjust the bumpsteer by placing the steeringrack higher or lower. You can adjust the amount of Ackermann by moving the steeringrack forward or backwards. Depending on the amount of drift you want in the car you can align the Ackermannpoint just in front or behind the rear axleline.

This was the comment I was looking for, hope he sees this. Although his inner tie rod joint is approximately in the zone in relation to the a arms, it likely isn't the right height in relation to the outer tie rod joint. So it either needs to be raised or lowered. To get it perfect, the length of the tie rod will also need to be changed

The rearward offset rack (on front steer cars) can have it's positive benefits when it comes to how the ackerman acts, and what it does on the tighter corners. It should not be affecting the bumpsteer though. I would double check pivot widths and heights, both inner and outer.

That was my first idea, too. Rethink Bump Steer and Ackermann Angle.
@grandpafabio
@grandpafabio 2 жыл бұрын
I believe Kolton is correct - moving r&p forward won't solve the bumpsteer. Mike - I heard you mention that the inner tie-rod end was on the same plane as upper and lower wishbone pivots. At ride height the tie-rod angle needs to intersect the IC for the control arms, but the inner tie-rod end also needs to be offset outboard about the same amount as your Ackerman offset at the upright (ie. lateral distance from kingpin axis to outer tie-rod end). To get bumpsteer fully dialed in often requires either the ability for fine adjustment of rack length (threaded ends), or a vertical spacer at the outer tie rod end (... or both). You may want to play with either CAD model or paper model before committing to metal... or else I suspect you'll still be fighting your bumpsteer problem on that new front end.

Just been searching the comments to see if anyone else had made the comment. Agree with the above. I’ve actually done the opposite to maintain favourable steering arm/tie rod angles at the extremes on the outside wheel, if that makes sense?

I agree with this and I think that the split frame would probably flex at high speed turns. It's not as rigid as the other way. The tubular cross section is not going to work for you in this situation.

I can't imagine how hard it was to cut off the entire front end of the car. You can shrug it off, but I know that represents hundreds of hours of hard work. Can't wait to see the finished result. I'm sure it'll be amazing. And yeah... I'm REALLY excited to see you get back to the 308.

I’m loving all your builds! One thing that stands out to me is moving the rack forward, it will change the Ackerman but not the bump steer. To do that you would need to shorten or lengthen the rack inner pivots.

Hi Mike, I feel I have to comment about the rack position. Moving the rack forward or back will affect Ackerman, not bump steer. Moving either the rack or the tie rod end at the knuckle up or down will affect bump steer. To fix your bump steer issue, if the rack is in the right position vertically already then I would look at the vertical position of the tie rod end at the knuckle. Your rack position looks about right for Ackerman but it’s just a visual. If you move your rack forward as you are planning, then you will not have enough Ackerman. Hope this helps.

Hi Mike! Thanks for the good KZfaq content. I am glad that nobody was injured. Regarding your bump steer issue: You need to change the height (Z-direction) either of the steering rack or the outer ball joint. Moving the steering rack in X-direction will not affect the bump steer issue. Cheers from Germany! Martin

Beautiful work. I think you will find that the angle of the steering rod to the arm (when viewed from above) affects Ackerman, not bump steer. You are right that the steering rod inner pivot needs to be in line with the imaginary line between top and bottom control arms, and the steering rod needs to be level at normal ride height.
@olofeicker4614

That was also my reaction. Moving the rack wont solve the bump steer. I think the outer joints should also be in line just like described for the inner ones. Anyhow I really hope for you this crash results in a better car so the work is more than just damage repair and worth it in the end.

Happy new year, Mike! That really stinks how tweaked all that is. It's not all bad news though, it does give you an opportunity to build in a mechanical "fuse" for the frame in the case of future accidents. Because if the frame is overbuilt then everything will bend equally, if that makes sense. Having specific weak areas will minimize damage to only localized areas instead of the entire frame being tweaked, if that whole concept makes sense.

fore/aft positioning of the rack will have a minor influence on bump steer. The inner and outer tie rod points relative to the chassis pivots and upper and lower ball joints, in front view, are the hardpoints that are really sensitive when considering minimizing bump steer. From looking at the video, I'd guess that the outer tie rod ball needs to come inboard.

100% the right call there; I probably wouldn't have had the stomach to cut it up but it's absolutely the right choice. I'd consider adding some kind've gusset between the front diagonals wherever there's room, unless the rack mount serves that purpose (I guess I missed wherever that wound up in the design). Curious.. is there a reason the rear upper arm mounts terminate vertically rather than on the top of the rect tubing?

Your damage locations show some problems with the 2 rail chassis design. The damage was stopped where the roll cage linked everything into a box section. Perhaps you might consider bringing tubes forward from your cage(dash bar level) and attaching them forward to around the shock mount area to help add a secondary load path from the rails moving vertically and twisting.The bars could be removable or welded. You could ultimately connect those forward stringers with a bar over or behind the engine ( a serious problem solving exercise around that huge alumalump). Just some thoughts of things I might address if I was working on this project. All the best safe wishes this year....really looking foreward to the rest of the 308 build.....I love anything that invokes my past of working on Scca and IMSA racecars.👍

Please take another look at the front wishbone mounts and bracing side to side, there is a lot of load imputed to the chassis here, before you had a lot of stiffness with the box section between the two mounts, these are now in effect floating- even with those added diagonal tubes… can you add a cross plate or U channel between the ends of the chassis rails as part of the radiator pack support?

Mike, this accident was 100% the result of bad karma from removing what are undoubtedly the coolest wheels on any car on the internet and replacing them with something generic. The fact that the wheel was bent in the accident only further confirms this. I think the only way to truly make sure this doesn't happen again is to have a real sit down with the truck, apologize to it, tell it you won't make that mistake again, and go back to the old wheel setup.

How would you feel about adding a prius style electric power steering column in conjunction with shortening the steering arm at the wheel hub. Quicker steering and electric power steering for low speed maneuverability with those big tires might be the way to go. You will probably still need the additional space of the redesigned control arm but a 1/2 inch goes a long way.
