From really old retro to modern going through "new-style retro", the Switch has an amazing SHMUP library... turning 40 next year. I'm having fun with Radiant Silvergun. I do like the light RPG mechanics, upgrading your weapons and having that carry over to your future runs gives it some rogue-lite element.

I'm patiently waiting for Crimson Clover. One of the best bullet hell indie shmups from Japan. It was created by legit Japanese professional shmup players. That's why it's so good.

Nice list, I think you pretty much nailed it Jordan. But to be a critic...... you include Shmup Collection(VGNY), the Psikyo collections, and ShotTriggers releases that are by definition compilations, but you avoided general compilations that aren't necessarily STG focused but have some on them; but that means quite a few STG games that do deserve to be included are not. Konami Arcade Classics Collection, Sega Genesis Collection, SNK 40th Anniversary Collection etc. Anyway, I already have most of these, but there were a few I missed that are now on my list, much thanks!

*Correction--Hishou Same is 2 arcade shooters (+ NES and Genesis ports) and a platformer, Wardner's Forest + Famicom Disk port. M2 ShotTriggers is trying to put out the entire Toaplan catalog but it's unclear if they'll finish due to low interest but I love these. I'm also the person who loves VNs & shooters (haven't played that game tho)

Neat list but more Comprehensive than "Essential." Terra Trilogy is noticeably absent. I'd have replaced RXN Raijin with it or literally anything else.

I own well over half of these in digital form. The switch has to be one of the best consoles for shmups.

I own about 20-25 games on this list and the only really good ones are G-Darius, Darius Burst, Raident Silvergun and Ikaruga. But far the worst i own is the R-Type remaster. It aged so poorly.

Halfway into the video I own almost all of them (minus a few of the crappier ones). I actually had not idea my collection was that big; it kind of just happened... Edit: yeah now at the end probably own 9/10 of the games brought up in this video. I got into the Switch late... Granted I'm a shmup-fan but feels weird man. I want the full 360 Cave collection ported competently.
