Alan Drury G4FZP will show us how an old ATX power supply from a PC that would otherwise be destined to the tip can be repurposed and modified. The resulting modification, using only three resistors, is an Amateur Radio Power Supply giving 10A at 13.8V.
Note: Please observe safe working practices when working on mains powered equipment, and only do so if you are competent to do so.

I wasn't able to view live so really appreciated the recording. As an ex Brit (G3YAQ) who, on a few rare occassions, had expierenced the bite of 230V AC I was very impressed by the emphasis on safety. Well done. I would like to add one comment to the one hand rule. I was taught that if you had to work on live equipment keep your left hand in your trouser pocket. That way if you did inadvertently make contact the current would be predominantly on your right side away from the largest part of the heart. I have no idea whether this really makes a difference. As was stated several times, if you need to make measurements find a safe way to do it. It was great to hear the English accent even though it was from Yorkshire. I was born in Cumberland but lived in Red Rose land for many years.

Came across this video by accident. Never thought about this modification, I need some thing to power a SkyWatcher EQ6-R Pro telescope mount. I have the same PSU that you have worked on. Worked on repairing PCB's for electric resistance welding machines since starting my working life in 1973, including phase shift units. Haven't done any electronic repairs since leaving BAE Systems in 2000. It will be good to get involved again. Brilliant article, thanks for sharing it, Regards to all.

How useful to be able to make a power supply for ham gear using a discarded computer PSU. :)

Older PC PSU's like the one in your presentation are worth trying, once you have hoovered all the grot off so they are less of a fire risk, but most of the modern ones I've seen and used (as an ex IT tech), are simply not worth the effort because most are not fitted with any sort of mains input filtering. A clue. If they were Made in China, toss them in the midden. Worthwhile exceptions include many HP Server PSUs because HP generally do things right. EN 55022 / CISPR 22 is the applicable standard for SMPS PSUs but it's far from being adequate IMO. GM1SXX.

Hi Jeff, see the PDF download in the video description. The trimmer is part of the original PSU. The PDF also details how to calculate resistor values. Thanks for your comment. Trystan
