Entering the world of 21st Century gypsy and traveller weddings, where ancient traditions meet modern fashions in an ostentatious culture clash, this film follows four gypsy and traveller families on their wedding day.
Considered ‘on the shelf’ at 20, in gypsy and traveller communities many girls get married soon after their 16th birthday with the support of their family.
The weddings are visual spectacles: brides and their families compete to have the most flamboyant dresses; girls parade into church in enormous dresses that sometimes weigh more than the bride herself.
Although the women look sexually provocative there is a tradition of premarital chastity that is increasingly unusual in Britain today.

Oppressing women is not okay in any society. Why is this child expected to do her parents’ work? She didn’t have these children why should she raise them. This is just indentured servitude.

Does the UK not have Child Services? In the US, at least you could open an investigation with child protective services (not that it would necessarily resolve anything) but at least it would be a thorn in the parents' side to try to make some changes.

And the other statistic is that 50% of travellers die before their 39th birthday and 70% of travellers die before reaching 59. This was taken from the Irish Times. The study found that seven out of every 10 deaths among Travellers aged two years and over were male and that the most common cause of death among males was road traffic accidents, accounting for 22 per cent. Men exclusively accounted for all suicide deaths among Travellers, over three-quarters of whom were aged less than 39 years. Cancer was the most common cause of death for females, accounting for 25 per cent. Coronary illness and road traffic accidents were the most common causes of death among males and females combined.

The mother does the housework and looks after the children until the first daughter is old enough to take over. Then she sits around, smokes, drinks energy drinks and chats with the other women or goes and has her nails done. Having a lot of girls is great for them as if one marries the next younger one has to take over, as was shown in this episode. Later on, once all your own girls are gone you have the daughter in laws who clean for you. The father does not care one iota as long as everything is clean, he is fed and his needs are met.

That it’s just so weird… they call it couture but it’s just something crated so full grown man can continue to abuse and Mary children. It’s all a system: the man becomes an adult, and start to go after 14 year olds, then they marry then, take them out from the school, so they don’t tell what they do and get “corrupt”, then the husbands isolate the wife’s from family and friends, moving for another place. That’s just so disturbing

No one has ever answered me! My daughter is going into her sophomore year of college this fall, and my son high school. They both have always had chores around the 🏡 beginning with their bedrooms, keeping them clean, they alternated putting dishes away after the supper dishes were done, my daughter helps put the laundry away and my son takes the trash out! They always got an allowance for it to. Their father, my husband & I thought it taught them responsibility and 💵 management which they are both still good at. We also taught both how to cook & BBQ too! Education however has always been a priority in our home for both. And yet I still believe my daughter should learn how to be a lady and my son a gentleman.

That new bride says she wants to be known for her wedding dress or her wedding cake. That is the statement of a child, indeed! A mature woman prefers to be known for her good character, good works, etc. My first and only husband was very abusive, so I took the kids and left him. Being a single parent meant i had very little time of my own, but i did it out of love for my kids.

Being known for a wedding a dress doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t be known for their character as well. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. But, you have to remember, these girls and women are given very little agency otherwise. Besides being known for a wedding, the only things they can be known for is good housekeeping and good mothering, but that won’t stand out in their community either. You can only get a trailer so clean, etc.

The gypsy lifestyle has certain merits obviously. However in equality it’s not one of them. Education is of paramount importance and I think Travelers should be educated both male and female. @@pkk639 things like family, community and togetherness are very important. Community involvement (by women) in raising children is very important. The lack of emphasis on education for all children is sad as they need to be able to function in modern society. Girls are pulled from school once they finish primary school (age 11 or 12 depending on where in the UK they live). Boys carry on but don’t tend to stay and get GCSEs. Without GCSEs they’re limited to future job opportunities and are often restricted to manual labour.

@Jen Cairns ahhh yes "raising children" that run feral and shit outside in people's gardens, lifts and anywhere they can find cos they don't do it in their caravans. Pulling girls out of school to raise their 6 younger siblings and do all the cooking and cleaning. The sons leaving school or barely even going to school so they can learn to do cash in hand work and con vulnerable people out of their money. The boys don't stay on at school at all, this is a complete myth that is only believed by people who have no idea what actually goes on inside this communities. The boys normally have less education than the girls. They are taught that education is not important - they don't want to be proper jobs because then they'd have to pay taxes, have insurance, the correct licences and training to use machinary etc etc. Sexual abuse is highest in the travelling community. Domestic violence and cheating husbands are extremely high and is normalised within the travelling community - its actually expected and accepted, women are, after all, the mans property. I remain unconvinced of a single merit from the travelling community.

This is why they get the reputation they have! They think it’s their world and we just live in it. They don’t have to follow the rules; paintball, curb driving, and boys behavior is all examples. Absolutely shameful.

I sincerely hope Bridget’s mother and brother have help after she is gone. I cried at the mother and daughter dance and seeing her mom look so deeply at her daughter. I wish I had traveler friends they are so lovely to each other.

Cleaning up after her husband should be less time consuming. Versus raising, feeding, & cleaning up after 4 kids. At least the hubby will go to work. She can have some hours of peace after cleaning. Her caravan isn't that big so cleaning shouldn't take very long. Where is her mom? Why isn't she helping to care for the 5 kids?

I have a serious question why are the girls pulled out and required to take care of the house if it’s their mother’s responsibilities? Why couldn’t they stay in school until they are about a year before they are to get married, that way they can help their children with school work and can properly read and write?

The family dont motivate them to continue because their aim is to raise her to be a nice housewife. I dont think school educationn is important for a lot of them as they wont be in a degree if they marry young and need to care for the husband.

I also think they are afraid that if they go to school until let’s say high school, the girls will figure out that there’s more to life than being married early, having children early and not being able to have a life of your own. Nothing wrong with being a stay at home mom/wife, but at least give an option to be a kid.

I’m from a Romany family, and our grandparents always drummed it into their kids and us that education is the foremost priority in life before making money. All the children, regardless of gender, is taught to clean, take care of home, laundry and themselves but they are expected to be children firstly! Me Nan and Pop (Granddad) were married at 21 (I believe), me mother married the first time at 18, me eldest brother was 26, me other brother was 27, I was married the first time at 23, so the whole getting married really young isn’t the done thing in my family or in others that I know of x

40:53 The fact that the camera men filmed multiple women being sexually assaulted and potentially raped is fucking disgusting. That girl in pink was fucking terrified and crying and nobody did anything at that boy pushed her into a dark alley. The the shot of her after looking completely lost and distraught was absolutely sickening. I hate how the show calls it “grabbing” like it’s not simply glorified sexual assault.

The mother is lazy. It’s one thing to have all your children help with chores, it’s modern slavery to assign your oldest daughter all responsibilities for taking care of your own kids! It’s disgusting.

The ‘grabbing’ custom is really disturbing to me. I can’t judge them though as that’s all they know, brought up as seeing it as just ‘the done thing.’ If anyone tried that on me they’d be grabbing themselves after a swift, hard kick between their legs!🤬😤

I know it's their culture but I feel bad for the girls feeling like they have to be married young and be Housewives. There's nothing wrong with getting married young or with being a Housewive. But they aren't able to choose. They can't decide if they want to stay in school or not. They can't decide if they stay single and go to college. I wonder what happens if a girl decides to not stay home and take care of her siblings and clean and instead goes to school and college? Will they be evicted?

In the episode they posted after this one, they state that an average Traveller’s life expectancy is only 50. That’s why the young girls are cooking, cleaning and looking after kids. Their parents are practically “elderly” from years of drinking and smoking. I’m not condoning what they do in any way btw

They don’t believe in educating women after 11-12. It’s rare if a gypsy girl finishes school. Brigette, who applied to work at Thelma’s shop (it was a series for gypsy girls to work) was the only girl out of 15 that had a formal education. She was 17 and had a high school diploma

The women are more literate than the men who are completely illiterate. They are not brought up for education to respect it. They disrupt classes and bring down the energy of the class.
