I don’t think that anyone would ever be wrong for entering the competition. However making people fork over their rights to their hard made works is straight up exploiting new artists and possibly desperate people….

As someone that is living in a developing country and that is learning animation I could be interested by this. The amount of money would be enough for me to not survive but live a good life for years. But also as someone that was screwed over by some employee that didn't pay the rest of my pay for commission work and ghosted me, those clauses definitely sounds too fishy for me. Also the 30 submissions stuff is just ridiculous. I definitely would understand why people would love to participate but I feel like this one is not worth it. Just my own opinion.

I feel so bad for everybody who entered the contest. I feel that both artists and animators deserve to be treated better AND paid fairly.

Pulling out if they get less than 30 submissions is an odd clause to add.. I understand that a host for a contest doesn't want to shell out anything if they don't get what they were looking for, but it's so much worse than a Kickstarter not going through, because it's not just "oh maybe I lose some money" it's "I did lose time, money, and effort, making something for a contest that doesn't acknowledge that product anymore" :/

So, the contest is being created in collaboration with British Film Institute. However, the promoter is listed as Pink Floyd Music Ltd and the people behind that are Gilmour, Mason, and Waters, so those three would be the ones to profit. Checking the terms of another contest that is sponsored solely by the BFI, it appears that the usurious copyright terms are actually from PFM. There is no record label involved. So, I can't say who came up with those terrible terms, but it was either the band or people directly involved with them, which is sorely disappointing. I do have to tell all you kids that the show they put on in support of the release of The Wall was pretty spectacular.

Honestly, I think "competitions" like this cross a little too far into the territory of spec work for my comfort. I think art contests are great. However, I think it crosses a line when they are used as a way for a company or an individual to get a lot of different options that they can choose from- to use for their own profit- without needing to pay all of the artists. I don't blame anyone who enters contests like these. They're the ones being exploited in this situation, not the ones causing the problem. I think in the cases of famous people, like this and the Billie Eilish thing, it feels particularly manipulative. They know their fans have a parasocial relationship with them. Most people wouldn't work for free just because their boss asked them to, but it's a different story when it's their favorite musician instead.

The thing about companies, anything you draw for that company automatically becomes their property, the characters you create end up no longer being yours, they end up being company property with all those contracts in place of course.

As a hobbyist that doesnt rlly care for the money nor exposure im probably the prime demographic for something like this lol. Your video informed me that it even existed Im glad you're not condemning everyone who thinks of entering, but yeah this is a shady contest. Honestly though every contest ive ever seen is shady. Not sure if theres a way to make an art contest without it being inherently shady. People who partake in them just need to know what theyre getting into and make informed decisions based on their personal situation. Younger and inexperienced artists should have guidance from older artists to make sure they aren't unknowingly getting exploited by contests. My problem with contests usually is them targeting younger/newer inexperienced artists that dont have the knowledge to know what theyre getting into. Contests can be fun af, even if theyre inherently exploitative on the hosts part. The host can do things that midigate that (pink floyd has not done those things btw) but the artists always need to know what they're getting into so they can make an informed decision about it. I might partake just bc my goals are to have fun and do art for fun and i think competition is fun My motivation doesn't conflict with it. I just wanna experiemnt and have fun. They wont take away my ability to tell people i made it and thats all id really care about honestly. Id never have a need to use the animation again and i make a livable wage from my day job so idc about the money aspect. Also i like the music so lol. But not everyones like me and people need to be informed and make decisions based on their own situation and what would be ok for them.

The entirety of the Dungeons and Dragons community had stood up in a massive uproar over a licensing issue that would have forked over the rights of third party publishers. We just barely scrapped by back to the status quo yesterday. I for one am getting pretty dang tired of corpos and millionaires or billionaires claiming to strip the rights of others to "protect themselves". Just because Pink Floyd's record label was influential in the past does not mean they hold the same values as they did today. It's hard to want to give them the benefit of the doubt when they're already in such a protected and privelaged position. Guilds and Unions are helpful. Jesus christ.

this reminds me of the Billie Eilish fanart/merch situation from last year almost exactly. even the sketchy term and conditions seem the same which is really disappointing seeing as the fanart competition got such backlash that they would even try to exploit artists again in the exact same way. such a money grab

bout the legal contract: Ai is not listed because it cannot be copyrighted. If a contestant use AI art it will probably be automatically disqualified, as the company won't be able to copyright the end material. So even if they didn't specify it, artists are protected by that.

Animator here, working on small studio. On AMV (Animation Music Video) project, we usually make repeatable and reusable frames to ease the job, like lipsync in still position or walk cycle, or whatever movement i.e. something reusable and let the compositor unite them. And as small studio we often use 8 fps rather than 12 fps except for the client pays extra, but that is rare chase so just use 8 fps but keep the quality of the movements good because, of course, deadline. So yeah, we work in efficient way but pleasing for our client.

This mindset of thinking that talking points is worth blood sweat and effort is insulting and continues the problems artists are creating. Here's the thing though. If you participate in this competition you're actively hurting the entire industry and reinforcing the fact that this giant corporations can do whatever they want to do. If this works what's to stop them from offering no prize money at all for another competition? I can't stop anyone from entering but I won't say that it's ok because it's not. Until people stand up together these problems won't go away. We need to send a message that they can't treat us like trash and we'll just accept it.

Depends on where the Argentina person lives, if he or she lives in a rural or poor area then yes it would make a huge difference but if they live in a city or somewhere high end then no its not going to make a huge impact on their lives, just like if you would compare someone living somewhere in a rural England vs london not all are the same and over simplflying it , is a massive disservice to people living in Argentina. Honestly, I don’t know much about this since I don’t animate I just make digital art, but it doesn’t seem like that big of a problem. Like at least they’re paying the winners unlike some other celebrity held art/animation competitions I’ve heard of, like just so long as everyone who’s work is used is payed fairly for their work it seems perfectly fine. I see how the copyright thing could be an issue but at the same time if you’re participating in the competition you know what you’re singing up for if you’re not comfortable with then just don’t enter, simple as that. I recognize all the problems animators have been facing lately but I honestly don’t think this is exploitation, you’re entering it fully knowing what you’re singing up for there’s no trickery or shady stuff going on behind the scenes.

Just because we are from developing or third world countries it doesn't mean we should be grateful for a pay that is considered bellow a living wage in the country of origin, specially when the cost of living keeps increasing and the minimum wage isn't close enough to cover a decent living condition
