As always Oscar, a very enjoyable and nostalgic video of the simple pleasures of model trains before we all wanted super detail. When I was a boy back in the early 1960s all I wanted was a railway that looked like the image on the trainset book with every conceivable item that triang or Hornby produced. Most of it of course, served no purpose like the suspension bridge that you just had to have but it wasn't there to cross a river. As kids we used our imagination. Thinking back to my first electric trainser I got for Christmas 1959 I had a Hornby 0 gauge clockwork set, the artwork was wonderful with Britannia storming out a station with a rake of crimson and cream Mk 1s. When you opened the box there was a 040 loco and some extremely short tinplate coaches that looked nothing whatsoever like the real thing, did I care? Well no it was such exciting fun.

It is hard to belief that the catalogue is 70 years old and that the trains are still running. They don’t make them like that any more!

Nice running session. Loved the tinplate vans. The plastic-bodied one dates from later on, but before the Triang takeover. I think Hornby called them super detailed and produced a lot of wagons in the same style: plastic body on a diecast chassis.

Hi Rodric, thank you for watching and the information. The detail on that plastic wagon, certainly is very crisp compared to Tri-ang models of the same period. All the best. Oscar

Although Meccano came up with a series of plastic bodied wagons that were superior to any others until very recently, they had a distinct blind spot about the chassis and wheel mountings. The system of the hangar in a diecast chassis must have been very labour intensive compared with pin point axles running in a flexible plastic chassis that Triang / Rovex were using. They did eventually move to a more detailed chassis (not entirely across the range), but pin point axles never appeared.

Good morning Oscar, that was a excellent session, bit of running, bit of shunting, just exactly what the Railway is all about. What a wonderful collection of tin plate goods wagons, they both looked superb and behaved very well. It must give a great deal of satisfaction when you see them running so well, it really is a tribute to your skills at doing enough to get them to run at their best whilst keeping the play worn look. Thanks Oscar enjoyed the session very much. Take care my friend, Eddy xxx

Hi Oscar, Nice intro footage. I have an assortment of HD wagons, printed tinplate and later versions. From a detail point of view they are without doubt in a class and era of their own. Amazing the difference a wee bit of dirt and a light clean can make to a running session 🤔👏 Gordon

A lovely bit of 3 rail action there Oscar. I have a nice little rake of these tinplate box vans and some of the horse boxes cattle wagons, fish and meat vans and love the sound of them clattering away on the 3 rail track often pulled by my 8f. I must say the single phantom uncoupling during the session is quite impressive and the ease they coupled up at the start shows how well you have fettled the couplings.

Hello, Oscar. Fabulous opening sequence with some very nifty shunting and point changes! The 8f is a wonderful loco; all that lovely valve gear to watch and the tremendous pulling power with those small, eight coupled, wheels. I lived in Wavertree, Liverpool, for a few years in the 90s, I didn't realise then that i was quite near where the Binns Road Meccano/Dublo factory used to be. Would've been nice to visit the site, close my eyes and imagine all those wonderful models being put together! Kind regards, Antony

Good afternoon Anthony, glad you enjoyed the sequence at the start, it's a great deal of fun making them but very time, but does eat at the time? There should be more in the weeks to follow. I think you're right, the places where these items used to be made in must have been wonderful places, Binns Road and that little place in Margate. All the best. Oscar

Good morning Oscar, it's Martin from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Just watched your latest video and as always it was excellent, very interesting and informative. I just love every aspect of your railway, it takes me back to June, 1970 when I left school and got a job on British Rail, I was 15 years old at the time. So for me going from Hornby model freight wagons to the real thing was for me a dream come true. I just love your Co Bo locomotive, she looks great pulling a rake of van wagons. Well I am going to have my tea and toasted tea cake now. Keep safe Oscar and have a good week. I shall be watching your next video Oscar. 👍🚂🚃

Good evening Martin, thank you again for taking to watch, it must've been thrilling to get to work with a real things. I shall try and get my two Rail CoBo on the railway and running at the same time as the 3 rail one, just need to find time to do it, should be quite nice visually with the two running with similar sort of wagons. All the best. Oscar

Good morning Oscar Thank you for another excellent video with superb close ups during the opening sequences. Delighted to see that Dublo goods vans are the main interest in today’s video. Dublo tinplate lithographed freight rolling stock is often overlooked in favour locomotives and coaches. I look forward to seeing a review 🫰 of open trucks, bogie bolsters and well wagons, petrol tankers and brake vans. Nothing beats the sound of Dublo tinplate clattering on 3 rail track! It would also be interesting to see a review of Dublo infrastructure including stations, goods depot, signal boxes, turntable, etc. I bought a second hand copy of ‘Hornby Dublo- Post war 3 rail collectors guide’ yesterday, it’s a A5 size handy guide to Dublo, well worth investing in if you can find one! Thanks for making my Sunday morning breakfast fun … David

Thank you Oscar, a lovely video. Regarding stickers on HD stock I once bought a Duchess body with a RAF roundel on the boiler. I think the availability of easy to use water slide transfers, time and a desire to make it your own probably caused a lot of odd liveries in days gone by.

Hiya Oscar - Ah all the fun of shunting!!! What a Lovely set of Tin Plate wagons you have got there Oscar - I'm not sure about this - with the Wagons that you think had a sticker stuck to them - try with 1 1st - get an old rag & put a small amount of White Spirit on it & rub it on the side of the wagon which had the sticker on it - & it might get rid of the glue marks on it!!! Hopefully it will just take off the glue & NOT the print on the tin plate wagon!!! May be they drilled the holes b/c of the cotton wool inside - so it could breath & not go mouldy or something like that??? 🤔🚂🚂🚂

That round outline of stickiness I reckon they were all Fyfes banana wagons?!😂😂 That cotton wool lasted well over time😂😂 That plastic one could it be a tri ang top and they were using up the chasis they inherited when they took over hornby?!

A good video this morning Oscar, I don’t have any hornby dublo wagons myself, just locomotives that have been converted for 2 rail operation and a couple of suburban coaches,, would definitely like to look into some wagons though, I imagine they can be are fairly cheap to get these days, only thing I would have to do is make sure they are 2 rail and not 3 rail. Was at Doncaster BRM show yesterday myself, managed to pick up a Kernow Bulleid 1-co-co-1 diesel and a realtrack models class 156.

Good afternoon David, thanks for looking in, I would definitely need to swap the wheels over. I think a lot of the tin plate wagons, hard metal wheel sets before there to Rail system came along. Hope you had a good time at the Doncaster show sounds like you come away couple of really terrific items, I love the look of the Bulleid 1-co-co-1 diesel. All the best. Oscar

Thanks for all the detail on the tinplate wagons Oscar, I have very few, but I am a big fan of the super detail series, the grain wagon being my favourite, I reckon Triang, and the other manufacturers, really had to take notice when they came out, I can't help but wonder what it would cost to produce items like the tinplate products with all their detail these days!

Good afternoon Paul, thanks again for taking the time to watch. A fortune today to set up the tooling for tinplate wagons with metal chassis and then the cost of the materials... I have a handful of the HD super detail wagons the grain wagon being one of them, it has some amazing detail, especially the brakes of tin, Tri-ang's version look quite detailed until you see the HD version. All the best. Oscar

Nothing like the sound of tinplate wagons with diecast chassis'. Funnily enough I ended up ditching all my super detail wagons for exactly that reason. Ironically of course, as somebody pointed out: in 1938 modellers bought the dublo wagons, threw away the bodies, and used the well made and detailed bases. In 1963 modellers bought the dublo wagons, threw away those same diecast bases and used the plastic bodies. Unfortunately Mute testimony to the fact that wagon bases and 3 rail track didn't change from the start to the finish Although we really know you're a tri-ang/hornby man.... ;)

I have only ever owned one Dublo wagon, only temporarily though, ( I bought it fairly recently, it as a gift for a collector friend). But I was quite impressed by the innovative construction and the detail in the printed surfaces! I can fully appreciate why the Hornby Dublo range were considered "top class" even after the arrival of Tri-ang? They really were built to last a lifetime, especially the locos.. Great bit of shunting at the start, much appreciated. If these wagons were bought second hand, perhaps the previous stickers were put on, as a way to 'individualise' wagons on someone's layout?

Good morning, Robin, they certainly used some quite impressive materials in their construction, whilst creating a lovely effect with printed detail on the flat surfaces, long may they last. Glad you enjoyed the shopping at the start of the video. Take care. Oscar

Hi Michael, glad you enjoyed that, I do have quite a good collection of Tri-ang signals, had quite a few out on the Super 4 layout, just not got around to it yet! also, have a few solenoid operated Hornby Dublo semaphore signals, although they require a little bit of renovation.
