I'm almost a month post op. Surgery was on 4/6/2021. I just wanted to leave my own experience and a positive comment for the people going through this procedure. I had a closed hemorrhoidectomy on three decent size internal hemorrhoids grade 3 done by a colon and rectal surgeon. The hemorrhoids would always protrude out whenever I had a bowel movement and this lasted for at least 3 years. I did bleed but it wasn't often. I probably bleed from the hemorrhoids once every 2 months. So the bleeding wasn't the biggest issue dealing with the hems, it was more so of not being able to do anything for the rest of the day if I did have a bowel movement that day. I would have to sit down on a chair with a pillow to help push the hems back in and this would last for at least a hour or two. Quality of my life was not the best for the past couple of years so I decided to get the surgery done. Some Pro-tips that were also mentioned from this video: Do not over use pain meds(will cause constipation) , take a stool softener twice a day(COLACE docusate sodium 100mg is the one I'm using), drink Metamucil psyllium husk at least once every other day, get a lot of rest the first 2 weeks after surgery, buy a squatty potty(will help you have a bowel movement easier) , do a sitz bath after every bowel movement you have(you can also buy a sitz bath bowl off amazon for cheap and adding espom salt to the hot water helps a lot), Eat a high fiber diet with healthy soups(try to avoid meat and alcohol for the first two weeks) and the last most important tip is to DRINK A LOT OF WATER! I drink at least 100oz of water a day and it helped me so much so I would recommend drinking as much water as you can with all the fruits and vegetables so you can have that nice long soft stool. Its the type of stool you want honestly for the rest of your life if you don't want hemorrhoids again. 1st week: Pain level around a good 7.5 out of 10. I took oxycodone for the first 4 days because I couldn't tolerate the pain. It will make you constipated so I took it every 12 hours instead of the recommended 6 hours. I had my first bowel movement three days later on 4/09 and it was the most intense and short pain I went through. It will hurt , but you must go through this part because you don't want your stool to dry up and become harder to push out. You will experience blood and discharge so always have a pad between your booty cheeks so you don't get your clothes dirty. (I use the band-aid hurt free non stick pads, very comfortable and it doesn't feel like anything is down there). 2nd week: The first 4 days of the 2nd week the pain level was around 5.5 out of 10, but mid way through the 2nd week the pain went down to a 4. I stopped taking the pain meds after the 4th day post op so for some people still taking pain meds through the 2nd week your pain shouldn't be as high unless you got a more serious surgery done. I started walking around the house to get some exercise in. A 15 minute walk every three hours helps a lot. I did end up calling my surgeon , because I had black blood coming out of my anus whenever I had a stool movement. He explained to me that it was old blood piled up from the surgery area and that it was normal. This only lasted about a week so if you constantly have blood in excessive amounts coming out whether its dripping down your leg or in every bowel movement, call your doctor. Every time I did have a bowel movement I felt a swollen mass which I thought was hemorrhoids again but its just your anus reacting to the stiches and the surgery area becoming tender. It almost goes away once you hop in the shower and let the hot water take care of its business. 3rd week: Things are starting to get a lot better. The pain is almost all gone. Even when I have a bowel movement , there is almost no pain. I still have a bit of discharge so I still wear my pads but no blood on my stool. The blood stopped so I'm guessing the stitches have all healed up too. Started moving around more , even played some pickup basketball games at the park. I would recommend to start exercising more often once your pain is gone. 4th week: I feel great. I think the procedure was a success. Still taking the stool softeners with the Metamucil fiber supplement. Overview: Just keep drinking a lot of water and try to achieve the softest most healthy looking stool. You will bleed and have foul smelling discharge but its just your body healing itself up. Also if you drink or smoke, I would stop before the procedure and at least for a month or two post OP. Exercising and moving around as soon as you can is mandatory too. Hot showers and sitz baths are also mandatory. They will help relieve pain so much. All of these tips have helped me recover from this surgery and now I feel amazing. I can live and travel without worrying about my next bowel movement. I highly recommend the closed hemorrhoidectomy if you are dealing a similar situation as mine. BTW this video helped me go through my surgery so I decided to at least make a comment to anyone else who needs help. YOU GOT THIS!!!! FOR YOUR PRECIOUS BOOTY YOU CAN DO IT!

I went into this surgery blind and holy crap was it painful!!!!! I had 3 stage 4 external hemorrhoids and 2 internal hemorrhoids that were bleeding excessively when I would normally go to the restroom. I finally went to the Dr and he recommended this surgery and OMG!! The bowel movement was ridiculously painful!! I was crying like a baby for the first 5 bowel movements I had, however I will say that now that I am in week 2 it does get better. You just need to get over the first couple bowel movements and the pain will gradually go away. Even though while I was in pain I kept saying “I regret getting this surgery.” I am actually glad that I did get it because I don’t have to worry about the hemmys ruining my plans.

I’m about a month out from my surgery and it really is a surgery that makes you think long and hard about how to never get them again. The best thing to do is keep the stools soft as possible for the rest of one’s life. I can tell you all that make sure you keep the area clean after every number 2 and this is done with a good shower head that can separate from the main shower or take some sit baths you’ll get through it but it does hurt for a few weeks God Bless you all.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’ve suffered from this for 27 years. I’ve missed so many events, so many work days, family functions, vacations, etc., because of hemorrhoids and planning my life around them, and it go so bad -prolapsed- that I had to to the ER. I was terrified, but I finally had a hemorrhoidectomy just 3 days ago. When the anesthesia wore off it was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. I was in tears begging for pain medication. The first 24 hours were the worst for me. Now, 3 days later, I’m finally stable enough to go home, and I can already tell that this will be life changing for me and my family. I’ll be able to poop without the fear of being bedridden for the day because of a hemorrhoid. As I continue to heal, I’ll be able to live a normal, active life again. It was both the scariest and best decision. Thank you for letting me share some of my story, and blessings to you!

Right now I'm tryna figure out how to pass my first stool, a lot of pressure but I think I'm constipated from the percocet, even after taking colace. Hey Ale thanks for sharing your story. I began having hemorrhoids 4 years ago in my mid 20s. It gradually got worse with the swelling, a drop of blood every now and then, then just more over time. I have internals and externals. When you had a bad flare up did you ever have to push them back in after cleaning? Did you have a staple or incision removal? Get well soon please share a update with us
@AleOmalley
@AleOmalley 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! YES! I had to push them back whenever they would flare up and just have a sitz bath afterwards! I recommend the TUCKS witch hazel wipes when you have a bowel movement and the RectiCare -Lidocaine 5% (it numbs you down there and is actually meant for them. ) I have been using it post op to help me out when I go / to help ease the pain of the stitches as they heal/ fall off. I wish I knew about it when I had the hemorrhoids, I would have used it before I went to the bathroom. My surgeon was initially wanting me to go the banded route which for one, I would've had to go in a few times in his office and they basically make the bands tighter and tighter until it "falls off" aka loses blood circulation but I insisted on the surgery since my family has a history with that method and it just came back with a vengeance.I then insisted on the surgery knowing it would come with a lot of pain and requiring 4 - 8 weeks healing time. I won't lie to you, it hurt.. a lot and you will be uncomfortable and you will cry that first bowel movement.. but I do not regret it one bit. I can wake up and not feel them there, lurking. I can squat and it doesn't come out or hurt. I can live my life and not worry about doing tasks where it will certainly flare me up. It's improved my quality of life in more ways than one. I wholeheartedly recommend you do it, if you're able to and DO NOT give up!! If it bothers you and the Dr. dismisses you, find another one!! I went through a few yes it's a lot of hoops to jump through but I just couldn't keep living my life that way and now, I can even eat high fibre foods to help my stool and my body which before I couldn't due to the severe pain. Sorry for the long reply but I have been there, literally 22 days ago!! I can't imagine my life now without the procedure. If you have more questions feel free to email me or DM me and I'll reply! I will absolutely update in a few months as well! Stay well, Happy Holidays!

My poor wife doesn't know what to do when I hit the 10/10 pain threshold. We are in this together as we used to say the "asshole" used to rule the house. Nobody can say what pain it is unless they have gone through. As a retired Veteran, I have had many surgeries to make me better but this one, take the win. Even tax pains aren't as bad. I had to wait 5 days for my first bowel movement. Needless to say, I almost passed out from the pain of going. I took laxatives to try to keep my stomach going, but what happened was that there was a slow moving "thing" in front of all the laxatives. After 5 days there was an explosion of epic proportions using an enema, through a sensitive opening that had just been cut open and stitched. Still, if this cures me after years of suffering immense pain, bleeding, discomfort, and ruined opportunities, I can't say that I would do it again right now, but this pain now after two weeks exactly is manageable considering that I might soon actually be able to leave the house. I can't believe that this might actually be happening, and I literally am expecting the world to end rather than living a normal life.

Thank you so much for all the information. I am fifty years old and have had hemorrhoids for eighteen years ( since giving birth to my daughter). I could always feel them, but they never caused me any pain or discomfort. UNTIL...a few days before Christmas. For some reason they became so swollen and I had the worst pain. I was crying and not able to do anything. This lasted off and on for almost two weeks. Then, they seemed to get better for about a month. Now, they are back again, although not as painful. I went to see a colorectal surgeon last week and he said I have internal and external hemorrhoids and he recommended the surgery. And I was also told that the hemorrhoids in December were probably thrombosed. Did you ever have thrombosed hemorrhoids? I'm just wondering if the pain fro the surgery could be compared to that. Also, I'm very afraid of the surgery but I'm also depressed thinking about living with not knowing if I'm going to have a bad hemorrhoid day.

Whenever I have an external hemorrhoid it always becomes thrombosed for me. Some people are just like that. I’m dealing with my 4th ever one. It has grown to a pretty big size. I can’t wait for it to pop, I’m too afraid to play doctor and do it myself. I had mine lanced once by a doctor, it didn’t help much in my case. All I know to do is just use every cream and painkiller in the book, you need them all. I’m afraid I might have to have this surgery someday.

I had this surgery 12 years ago, before I had kids. Unfortunately due to two pregnancies, an anal fistula and a lifetime of undiagnosed coeliac disease ( which obviously affected my guts and poos for years), they're back. They're not painful thank God, but they're physically extruded, prolapsed and I have a lot of excess skin tags which makes cleaning after a BM a nightmare. My bum ALWAYS itches and I'm at the point that I'm desperate to get my bum fixed.... However my surgery 12 years ago was the most painful experience I've ever gone through, even worse than my super traumatic induced labour with my daughter, and my completely passion relief free natural labour with my son. I can't describe the pain. I am tired of wiping 10 times to get a good clean, but the pain is putting me off, especially if they'll come back AGAIN

Ms. Alejandra Rodriquez, I myself started with blood Oct 30th, 2019. It started regularly then it stopped and became every 2 to 3 months of blood and then coming out every time I went to the toilet. March 26th, 2024 colonoscopy, doctor found hemorrhoids. Since I was told surgery will be need, I had been doing research and video watching. I now know that I haven't been coming out when I go, the hemorrhoid slips out. I have seen different videos on different procedures on removing hemorrhoids but I know that they all hurt afterwards. I am dreading the procedure coming May 1st. They are giving me 4 weeks off from work. I just hope I'll be able to bare the pain until I am all healed up. Like everyone else, I know that I must change my diet. It too will be a difficult journey. At 39, it is time to do so. Much love to you and everyone else who had the surgery and posted comments. ❤

I've had hemorrhoids off and on for last 5 months and right now they're dormant as far as pain but doing the wrong thing like not hydrating enough the previous day would set them off after having a bowel movement and it'd hurt for a few hours a day for a few weeks. I went to a doctor about it in September but they had me do a colonoscopy. It's been scary to have a bowel movement for months, although from July to October or so, it was kinda like a phobia. Fast forward, in November, now that I have hindsight about it, I had another flare up after not pooping for 3 days and was deadly constipated. When I finally got it out, and this is undiagnosed, but after watching videos about this, I'm almost sure I have an anal fissure--I dunno if you've had spasming as well as pain but that's a marker of an anal fissure. When I go to moisturize my anus, I do feel a cut or tear in it so I've been having to deal with that as well. I still feel the hemorrhoid but it doesn't obstruct my bowel movements and there's no pain anymore so I don't worry about it right now. This is the best I've felt since July, however. Taking magnesium to relax the muscles down there is a natural way to indirectly deal with the pain, but I've wanted to avoid surgery unless it was the last resort. This is a tangent comment talking about anal fissures but you've helped me learn a lot of information about this.

I can relate to the crying with the "excruciating pain." I describe the sutures like sitting on thorns, walking around with thorns on that tender area--and eliminating broken glass. Evidently, a very heavy suture thread is used because it has to hold things in place for up to four weeks, so it's "heavy duty" suture thread--it's so stiff, it almost feels like needles or straight pens. So, this is "serious pain."

@Mr John Hi. I'm NOT an MD. I just looked up laser surgery for this procedure. I'm guessing because the removal of flesh in this delicate area is still the goal, pain will still be a factor in recovery. The one thing I messed up on was on taking the pain medication accuratly--and "on schedule." One of the dilemmas I had was dealing with the new federal mandates for distrubution of benzos (pharmacuitical pain meds). It was a major problem to get refills--and, it elongated my recovery and exagerated my pain. My suggestion is to talk to your doctor about how to make sure you will have those pain meds in a timely manner so that there's no "catching up time" when trying to refill, its a weekend, or it takes hours to connect with your doctor. Also, make sure you clearly uderstand the cycle of taking your pain meds, cycling exactly every two hours the tylonol, acetaminophen, then pharmacuitical--keep to that schedule as it will keep a theraputic level pain management meds in you system. I made a chart and even set my alarm to wake & take the next dose. That really helped. The first three days are particulary hard. So, stay on top of the meds. And, YES! The surgery will CHANGE YOUR LIFE. And, while your going through it, you'll find a lot of brave people here on KZfaq who posted their day to day experience, sometimes several times a day. It help you to not feel alone!

It literally saved my life. I would NOT be here had I not had that surgery. My hemoglobin levels hovered between 3.2 mls and 6.8 for three years, w/24 blood transfusions, 20 Iron Pushes--that's no way to live--actually, not living. So, it was either the surgery or the grave.

Did you have muscle spasms down there? I am randomly but I do also have pelvic floor issues. In my experience I kept having small amounts of loose stool the morning after surgery. Day one I had no pain. The first two nights I couldn't sleep because of the pain and pressure on my stitches. Literally couldn't find a comfortable position and woke up a lot. Day two after surgery I had a HUGE BM. Surprisingly I didn't have much pain despite needing to push and I felt so much relief. I also stopped my oxy due to it not helping my pain and I didn't want to get constipated. I started stool softeners and miralax day one. Lots of random gas. My gut sounds like wind lol. Thanks for the Recticare recommendation, it's helping a lot so far, especially in between my ibuprofen and Tylenol. Sitz baths are also my life saver. Question though: did they give you local anesthesic that should last a few days after surgery? I'm praying I'm just blessed and am having easy bowl movements. Also to anyone reading, memory foam donut pillows are super helpful for car rides and hard surfaces!

@@AleOmalley yeh dear, I had my hemorroidectomy on 29 April 2021 and they removed 6 internal hemorroids with 2nd and third stage. My hemorrroids were not prolapsing but they were often bleeding. Now I feel 99 percent recovery after two and half months.

@Mr John mine lasted about 11 days but the pain came and went throughout those days, 1-5 are definitely tough and you’ll be cursing the gods but sitz baths really help. I’m three months posts opp and I’d do it again if I went back in time, I have no blood in stool and I’m no longer itching or having painful bms. I know everyone’s experience is different but I do think it helped my quality of life a lot. If you do decide to go through it, prep a plentiful fiber diet a week before and start stool softeners three days before the surgery. I wish I had done this. Take miralax the second or third day, it really helps w the first bm. Sitz bath three time if not more a day for 15-20 min, and you can apply ice to the area on and off. Some doctors don’t recommend witch hazel wipes but I personally loved them and would fold them in the area to help w the swelling. It’s a journey but honestly by day 12 I was feeling pretty good.

@Mr John how are you feeling?? Fruits, veggies, anything high fiber. I basically lived off of oatmeal with fresh fruit cut up in it. Anything that is hearty but not going to back you up. Even soup is a good way to go

Im 9 days post op but I still can’t have “normal” bowel movements they’re very painful and very minimal amount. I tried the laxative but it’s either from one extreme to the other I’ve been on a liquid diet since the surgery but for whatever reason my bowel movements are still rock hard any advice?

Just saw this. Thanks. For sharing. What kind of diet do you recommend post op if you did it over again? Would you eat differently like the week of the surgery? I've got to get this done. Yeah. They say this is one of the most painful procedures hands down. I'm using colace now and that has helped my bleeding a lot. But like you, I cant exercise right, lift stuff. You inspired me to schedule the appointment for the surgery. Based on quality of life I can have after.

Hi there! Oh man, Im really happy that you'll be taking steps to get those removed! It has made a world of difference for me and I'm certain it will for you! Honestly, I would keep it simple (unless you have some medical issues prior to the surgery, in which case, ask your doc!) BUT Overall, I had A LOT of water and soup!!! I will say when we ran out of the homemade one about a week in I got some progresso from amazon fresh. I had soup for about a week and a half and slowly included more solids. I wouldn't do red meat or anything too heavy for that first week. The first bowel movement was terrible as it was with just soup so... be aware! lol. Also, get a piece of paper or have a note open on your phone to keep track of symptoms, bowel movements and to keep track of your Colace and Norco/Pain meds to be safe!! I was very drowsy due to the Norco and I was worried about taking too many before the 8 hours etc. Keep wet wipes at the ready, Costco has great ones that are flushable. But yeah, if you have a family member/friend/partner to stay with you for the first week that will help so much!! Don't expect to drive the first few weeks and DO take strolls outside, I thought it was said lightheartedly by my surgeon but I really couldn't walk that far at all at first but it did help and I got further over time! Also, what I would do differently is take Colace from the start! I took a plant based stool softener and that was a bad idea because it took so long to take effect! ALSO, I would buy the sitz bath BEFOREHAND too. I have a new video where I talk more in depth if you'd like to check that out as well! :)

What is everyones experience with newer methods like HAL-RAR THD or stappled haemorroid removal? I waited almost 10 years for these and it turns out both dont work and even the stappled causes serious problems. I am thinking of trying the ligasure haemorroid surgery. It has a quicker healing time, smaller wound and hopefully less pain
