This brought back happy memories ! , I had this very set as a christmas present about sixty years ago and can remember my dad and me playing with it and filling the coal truck with xmas nuts - It had the battery controller with three 4.5 volt every ready batteries that you screwed the controller down onto and was a fantastic introduction to model railways , thank you.

Thank you for the great tip this morning of soldering fishplates what a good idea. One which I'll use with the Super four in my layout but also use on a exhibition series 3 layout I'm showing as I've been invited which is kind. And the last thing you need at an exhibition is hands pushing pulling when it grinds to a halt. Thank you RS3 started me off Jinty brown wagon fish van a brake back in 1963 Dad paid extra for a H&M clipper controller for it the shop owner saying they are built to last and that controller is still in use to this day! Thank you for a e joyable helpful clip

Phew! You had me worried there Oscar, when I looked earlier and there was no new video. Nice to see a bit of departmental work going on with the track and wiring! Thanks for the useful info about the wire and connectors (electrics aren't my strongpoint). That's a really nice little set isn't it? Nice plain wagons in realistic muted colours instead of the gaudy bright coloured wagons of the later Hornby era. Thanks Oscar! Regards, Antony

Hi John, sorry about the time mixed up. I seem had selected 7 pm instead of 7 am. It would be far simpler if KZfaq adopted 24 hour clock across its platform. It doesn't appear to be an option in the interface I'm using, all my devices operate on the 24 hour format, have not found an option to change it within KZfaq so far. All the best for the coming year. Oscar

Good morning Oscar, was a little concerned not seeing you yesterday morning, hope you're well. Interesting to see the wiring of the siding it's working well and looks neat. These jobs always take longer than anticipated but hay ho it's worth it. Nice little Jinty running around the Railway as you say anyone would be please to get that for Christmas or a birthday. It was strange to see a couple of figures on the station platform also the station luggage electric trolley, I've got that exact one don't know how old it is but still playing a part on my Railway. Thanks once again Oscar always enjoyable, your work is always so neat is a great tribute to these vintage models. Take care Eddy xx

I'm not sure of the exact date, possibly late 50s early 60s great to hear you have one of the Tractor & Trailers on your layout. Thanks again for watching the video, should be on time next Sunday! Happy New Year from Australia, Oscar! I was lucky enough to find your channel during the COVID-19 lockdowns and have really enjoyed every video I have watched. I am impressed with the knowledge, quality, attention to detail, production values, variety, professionalism, humour and humility of your presentations. Your enthusiasm for the hobby and love of every little thing on “the railway” is infectious. I am always amazed when you operate up to four trains on different systems and controllers, film the action, and provide commentary all while monitoring focus and battery levels and trying to not trip over all your goodies. That is multi-skilling. Keep making people smile!

Another nice little set Oscar. The tips and tricks you showed and told us about are well worth seeing. Soldering the fishplates seems like an excellent solution considering some of my track is getting on now. I also hadnt thought about directly scanning the side of a good locomotive to print decals for ones with tatty or missing decals. I will have a go at both these things. Thankyou.

I really like the way you solder the fish plates. I have had to solder some of the fish plates on my Super 4 (no surprise there) and always found it difficult to get the solder to take to the fish plates. I never thought about cutting a groove to make it easier. Thank you for the tip. I have a troublesome set of points that is going to benefit from this new knowledge. 😊 Nice train set too.

Hello Oscar, it's Martin from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It is 17.50, pm, Sunday 7th January. Hello Oscar, another great video, and very interesting to see your track work. I love the Jinty locomotive, I remember my dad getting me a second hand one. That must have been in the early 1960s. I remember mine was black as well. It will be great when you get a goods shed and maybe a Crane as well ,it will look great. Well as it's night time now I am just having a cup of tea. Ok Oscar keep safe and ill look forward to next Sundays video 👍🚂🚃

Happy new Year Oscar! I quite enjoy watching you solder and doing work on the railway like this. You are one of the few people in the Railway KZfaq community that actually solders correctly. So many others do the "carry" the solder to the work and lose all the flux along the way. I am in the electronics industry and seeing someone solder correctly is refreshing and you do nice, neat joints too.

I would recommend an Antex soldering iron about 17 watts. These have much smaller bodies and so less chance of the metal coming into contact with plastic parts. They are around £20.

Hi Oscar, My Internet was "off-line" for the better part of a week? I had to wait about 3 days to see this week's video? I think that I was beginning to have "withdrawal symptoms"? Nice trick with applying the solder to the fishplates? My brand of solder does not like the steel rail at all, and I often have to use a smear of Vaseline as a flux, (That works well on brass too).. I really prefer to use a "new" fishplate (if I have them to spare)? It is only a siding, but it's nice to have good continuity? Good job.. It's hard to imagine how long that the little open truck (in the set) remained in production.. A very versatile wagon, available with so many colours and loads? I love the Jinty's.. Another Tri-ang stalwart loco? Again, many variations over many years? My Sunday is now complete....

Hi Robin, thanks for looking in and the information, quite a long time without the Internet. How did we ever survived before it? I managed to upload this video at the wrong time I seem to have selected 7 pm instead of 7 am... I've been using a budget soldering iron recommended by my local electrical shop when my previous 30 watt iron gave up the ghost The temperature is variable and is capable of very high temperatures (clams to be 48 watt) which is great for warming up the steel Rail & fishplates for soldering, Iron can be turned down for switches and wire/cable had it about 18 months now. I'm currently using a solder by Cynel 60/40 resin core solder 0.7mm. New fish plates would be the way to go, but the only ones I found to fit these rails are a bit cost prohibitive when so many are needed... Glad you liked the contents of the set a classic group of items. All the best. Oscar

A great new video and Happy New Year. I noticed the switch panel @18:47 and was wondering if you have a video on how you did the wiring with the lights for that? as I have had a look through your video collection and can't find any mention of it or pics of it in the video previews.... This is something I am looking to do for my layout to signify power to isolated sections of my tracks with a green light showing power.

Hi Tim, thanks for watching and happy New Year. The panel you mention shows point direction indicators for some of the three rail track, eventually, when I get around to it, all of the points will have indicator lights. Here is a link which shows how I've got about it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r9GeopuB0MmdfmQ.html hope that is of some help. Oscar

All the old Triang rails are steel so are subject to rust, we decided to go for peco flexi track which was nickel silver,. How do you keep your track both clean and free of corrosion,

Thanks for this. Interested in how you made the decal for the Jinty; can you share a link to the video you did at the time? Many thanks.
@oscarpaisley6 ай бұрын
Hi, I was sure I had shown how are did this in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q9t_iMybltaUoZc.htmlsi=oV1mp0RzH7-fHc5O&t=91 But I've just looked over it, and I haven't covered it. I will try and add it to a video soon. I've made these reproductions on a handful of occasions, but you need the original thing to start with, it's best to get them on the flatbed scanner and select only the area around the decal, it also works by photograph of them provided you can get it large enough in frame and close focus, but you can get quite a bit of distortion, especially on a mobile telephone. I've printed these out on an Epson printer on the photo setting, but I've only used cheap 80 GSM paper from the supermarket. It's best to do a handful ganged up on the sheet, quite close together. They were quite nicely, just cut out with a very sharp blade, the one on the Jinty, I sprayed with a very basic extra hold hairspray from the discount store. I quite like this because it encourages the ink from the printer to spread a little into the paper, making it look a little more original transfer.. Great at arm's-length running on the railway but up close under magnifying glass. They look like paper cut out.. Many of the commercially available reproductions are vey good but usually are the wrong size, and the camp appear to sharp. The originals really are quite crude, looked at closely. Hope that's of some help. Oscar

Hello Oscar, do you solder all , some , or many of the fishplates to the track , to ensure current continuity? If so it explains why your Triang engines rarely stutter and stall ! regards Paul

Hi, almost all of the fish plates are soldered to their respective rails with very few exceptions. I did some sections when I was first putting it down and decided to keep going with it. It was time consuming, it's not perfect but it's made a massive difference to the running. All the best. Oscar

Useful tips regarding series 3 track. What was your reasons to use Series 3 over Super 4 ? I remember one of your previous layouts used Super 4, I much preferred the geometry and look of Super 4 over Series 3. Having said that I did aquire enough Series 3 to build a small layout. Super 4 by comparison was a lot more expensive but Series 3 seems to be getting more expensive and now System 6 seems to be the cheapest (especially the steel rail version). My first ever layout that my father built me in around 1968 used a mixture of the grey standard track and Series 3 all bought 2nd hand. Happy days
@oscarpaisley6 ай бұрын
I had to Series 3 and Super 4 as a child before acquiring steel system 6. It has all been passed on to me and my brother from another family member in the mid-70s. I had always intended to build one of the trade layouts depicted in various pictures and diagrams by Tri-ang Railways in the 50s and early 60s it should have gone on the board when the Super 4 came down, I had collected enough of it to make this one (T.R.L.4/59) at the bottom of this tri-ang.weebly.com/1959-canadian-standard-display-layouts.html the board was such a poor condition. It was replaced by the board that goes around the room. Needless to say it needed a little bit more track than I already had.. I do like the look of it and remember been thrilled with it as a child, it's been great deal of fun and very rewarding developing the current railway. The steel System 6 can be very cost-effective but the original steel point work is the weak point. I think it's all good fun whatever you decide to go with, for me it makes sense to go with the earlier track types as the majority of my collection is much more at home on it. The standard track is lovely, looking stuff, I've never been able to get hold of enough of the later polystyrene base Standard Track to do anything sensible with. Maybe one day... Thanks for taking the time to watch. Oscar

Thank you for your reply, like you a have a collectionof old playworn Triang locomotives and rolling stock and due to a lack of space I'm in the process of building a small portable layout with Series 3 just so I can run these trains. I get as much enjoyment watching and operating these old clunkers as I do running my much more finescale DCC locomotives at the club layout.@@oscarpaisley
