Sonic has had an interesting history with handheld games. Back on the Game Gear, he starred in several platforming games that served as a side dish to the main home console course. Despite the change and evolution the series would go through in the late part of the 1990s going into the 2000s, this trend stayed mostly the same. In my opinion, despite the somewhat rocky circumstances surrounding Sega's transition from console manufacturer to mere developer, the early 2000s were when Sonic was at his best overall, but at the time some fans still felt a little left out with the lack of 2D sidescrollers. Fortunately for them, some more traditional Sonic games were on their way.
Having moved their flagship blue hedgehog over to their former rival Nintendo's territory, Sega and Sonic Team contracted then-new developer Dimps to handle a series of 2D Sonic games on the Game Boy Advance, those of course being the Sonic Advance trilogy. Creative names sure are something, huh? These games were generally well-liked at the time, even being enjoyed by some people who didn't really dig the series' direction back then, but these days things are all over the map in that regard, as is typical for Sonic. Me personally, I've barely played these games, so now that I'm doing this core Sonic platformer retrospective of sorts... eh, why not. May as well knock them off the backlog while I'm still young... in yet another feature-length video HOW DO THEY ALWAYS END UP SO LONG?!?!?!?!?!
That said though, this is probably gonna be my last Sonic video for a little while. After working on all these videos this summer, I'm a little burned out on the blue blur, and there's so much more I want to talk about than just this series. School's started again, meaning my uploads are gonna slow down dramatically, and really they kind of already have with how long it took me to get this one done, so... I don't know, I'd rather take a bit of a break from Sonic. I think the GBA stuff is a good stopping point for now anyways. I'm not totally sure what will be next, but whatever it is, I hope to see you back for it regardless.
