In the 1990s, Sonic the Hedgehog was on top of the world. Starring in four of the most beloved sidescrollers of the era, he burst onto the scene and made a strong impression with his no-nonsense attitude, engaging characters and world, and unique physics-based platformer gameplay. In other words, there really wasn't anything else like Sonic, and while there were many imitators, none could beat the original.
That said, things wouldn't be sunshine and rainbows forever. Sega would make several questionable business decisions that made consumers lose trust in them, most notably the rapid releases of hardware that severely impacted the sales of their main system, the Genesis. Of course, as he was their mascot, Sonic would end up getting caught in the crossfire, and received a few games on these platforms, most notably platformers that served as a compliment to the main four titles on Genesis and Sega CD. You could call them the "other 1990s Sonic platformers," because I'm awful at naming videos.
Today, I'll be taking a look at several of those. Will they all be horrible abominations? Will there be a few hidden gems to speak of? Will I have nothing but positive things to say about every last one? Will I ever stop asking rhetorical questions and just get to the point? All of this and more, you can find out by... watching? I think? Maybe?
