A New Firewood Bundle Option for the Roadside Firewood Stand. Decided to try another option for bundles in the roadside firewood stand. I like trying new ideas and also like giving customers options when it comes to buying firewood from the roadside stand. Let me know what you think of this idea and any ways to improve upon it.
New videos every Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and the Back 40 Live Stream every Friday night at 8:00 pm central.

I love that you are thinking and making more options for your customers to be better customer service. The only problem I see is the old lady that throws the crate in the back shuts the truck and drives off ripping the crate chain stand deal. I support other guys that say no chain. Sign stating please put crates back.

I sometimes have bundles walk off without money. I figure they must have a really horrible life and need it way more than I need $5 if they are willing to do that. So that is my charitable contribution to society. That being said I would chain my crate in this situation. Sad we live in a world that such measures are needed

Nice job Dan. I like the way you’re always thinking of how to improve your business. And give the customer more. We’re going to try those crate things and see how that works. I don’t think we have to change ours up because people have to actually come into our property to get their wood. And for those odd shaped pieces we had those two are bin wood. We always tell customers we don’t sell pretty wood but we sell great Firewood! Thanks for the great ideas!

If you have repeat customers, what about a crate exchange? Bring the empty one back and take a full one? The advantage to the bag is it loads easier, prevents stuff from getting all over the place in a truck bed or trunk. It’s also much easier to carry a bag inside vs loose pieces. The crate loaded might provide those same benefits but the only question is how many would actually make it back? Or would it just lead to now buying crates instead of bags. I don’t know just throwing ideas out. Love that you’re thinking about it and trying new things. Nice work.

I like that you are always thinking, about new ideas. Your free scraps, that is what I burn in the house our fire pit. I do offer small pieces of cherry to customers I talk with, for smoking meat, without charge. Hopefully they will buy a bag of cherry, cut small for 10.00. Thanks God Bless

What about bailing twine and just tie the bundle in a way that can act as a handle and they can carry it. You could still use the crate as a reference for the size of bundle and then just tie them together instead and don't bother with the crate. I'd worry about someone tripping on the chain. The other thing could be metal strapping and use a strap sealer like they do for some loads on pallets 👍🙂

Good morning Dan! Love that you always try new things to increase sales etc. I am interested to see how it turns out. Personally, I would pay extra to have it in the bag. I imagine folks buying bundles use it primarily for bon fires or fire pits etc and may not use all the wood at once so a bag keeps it neat and easy to carry etc. But hey, you might be on to something! Let's see how it goes. Dd you price the bags a dollar higher than the open bundles? Another test you may wish to do is to put the same amount of wood in the loose option as you do in the bag and charge another $1.00 for the bagged splits. Just an idea. Good luck buddy!

Overall, I like your marketing choices Dan. I think I would eliminate the chains on the milk cartons for a couple reasons. Somebody may get tangled up and go down, which wouldn't be good, and if they drive off with a carton, they could also drive off with an extra bag of wood as well. As for the free wood, I think I would try cutting them down into smaller chunks(cutoff saw) and sell as chiminea wood and the like. Just my 2 cents. Interesting content!

Great way of thinking using milk crates. but the free bin i would reconsider. If it is free it will all be gone with one customer. And are you going to fill it every time some one comes? That would cost you your time you just saved from going from bags to the crate. So i would say you will spend more time giving away free wood. Have a crate of ugly wood for 2.50 and i am sure they would say 2 crate for the price of 1 and you make money on something you want to give away. As they say "one mans trash is another mans treasure".

Shifty long time no see buddy. See you got quite the operation going on in that backyard of yours. Do a ton of camping and not sure what the bag costs you but everyone that I have got wood from uses a little shrink wrap and then the staple about 6 inches of flap rope directly to the wood as a handle and it works great and can burn everything. Bags seem like that could get pricey!

Have you considered making charcoal and biochar out of your uglies and burls? Another point; I find it's useful to offer tinder or kindling (fire starter) bags. Another is selling custom cuts to city runaways who own places with small wood stoves. 12-14 inch length bundles have been surprisingly popular. Female clients like the idea that they don't have to recut the wood. The crate idea might be good if you do farmers' markets as they can pull up and YOU can dump it in their truck without letting go of the crate. We all have the problem of processing small loads and bundles in an efficient manner. I look at it as a link to a greater customer base. Bundles are almost a loss leader for me. The marginal product on the last bundle is generally approaching zero,

I like the crates but that chain is a pain. Looks like you could maybe just divide the spaces and do smaller cubbies and the customer can just grab and go without the crate? I’m not that convinced on neither : even with only 2 crates in your RSS, the chains will make a mess sooner or later (getting mud dirty, entwined). Let alone if you have 6 crates of it. The free wood is to me a bad idea for 2 reasons : (1) people could take it away on a regular basis without buying anything from your RSS and (2) as it are ‘odds and ends’ it doesn’t appeal to your quality standards. Re-timbering your RSS to offer a 10§ loose stacked wood as an alternative would sound like a better solution, at least in my eyes. But, I like the idea of rethinking and putting to question the way you sell firewood! All the best from Belgium buddy 😉
