I have the (overrated, flabby, mushy, spectral, dim and dull) Sennheiser HD600, and they don't tell me anything. Not surprised. (I bet the Fostex T50RP, which I recently tried and didn't even really like, would have told me something like that.)

Well, I'm sorry to hear they have bad treble...I was looking forward to liking these but I don't like the T1s treble either. Have you ever heard the AKG K712? I just bought them, and they have a similar bass response curve to the K812s, but the treble seems (and sounds) very natural and just right to me. I suggest you give those a try!

Akg k812 pro need a good burn in time as all headphones do explains why some loving them and some hating them or everyone would hate them or love them not both Whathifi say you dont start to hear there potential until 100 hours burn in and this is a fact its not your ears playing tricks the difference is night and day I have experienced this since being into this gear since late 80s until this day with headphones and speakers etc The amount of change varies from little to a lot treble smooths out and bass gets deeper and tighter and soundstage really opens up I have proved this to people and shocked in the change of sound when they didn't believe in it I have also come across forums where people never believed and then tried it and stated the change was huge now they are a believer No harm in trying this experiment with a few headphones rather than assume cause you will never find out Not every headphone will change enough to like them but will be a fair judgement on them before sending them back then you know for sure its a good or bad one at least to your ears Akg k712 pro my friend brought on my recommendation he was really dissapointed with the sound out of the box and was worried and didn't believe in burn in at the time I heard them myself already experiencing many times over the years They sounded sterile no soundstage not much bass etc, i said i will burn them in for you I burnt them in for 250-300 hours and the difference was massive Gave them back to him and he could not believe his ears he said there a totally different headphone and loved them Dont be ignorant to it just try it and you will be pleasantly surprised If the k712 pro changed massively so will k812 pro believe me they will

My k712 at fists sounded worst than my k240s i was totally dissapointed, but a year later they started to develop exquisite and acurate bass, mids are on point, trebble are okay, then the better amplification i updrade the more enjoyable they get, 712 is just perfect for me now.
@nickhaswell6011
@nickhaswell6011 Жыл бұрын
@@necrodh yes they are truly special 200 hours burn in at decent listening level but not to distortion Listen to them during this or leave them playing in a drawer while your at work or and when your out for the day And they will shine big time As you said they went from sounding worse than your k240s and now there awesome thats some change And once there fully burnt in bass, mids, treble are superb Then put high end gear through them with good amp power Portable terms fiio e12 is a must with a lg v30, v40, v50 or a high end player by fiio or ibasso or astell and kern etc Indoor kit will drive them further with even more power but the rest of the kit has to be up to the task And they will knock your socks off

Hello! Thank you for being so honest in your of reviews. Others are blessed as soon as there is something new, not to mention the brand blind people. This shows that novelty and high price does not have to mean that they are better than those been around a while. Self so I was very curious about these until. NOW! I have over the years checked your tests with my own and actually often given you credit for even in my mind right judgment. So in this case so I do not feel that I need to check. The 872 has much better treble out of the box. The only big issue is a midrange dip that can be reduced with eq but not fully corrected. I use a pair of them daily and they sound great out of the box but extraordinary with a little eq.

Good review. Thank you. I just purchased a pair of AKG K240s. They sound fantastic a lower volumes, but if you crank them up, they distort...which was very disappointing. Give me a pair of Bose or Sony Studio Monitor cans any day of the week for cranked up listening. The AKGs are only good for low volume...perhaps a jazz enthusiast would appreciate these.

Hm i dont know, Tyll doesnt seem to be that happy about the K812 sound, i mean the X1 is on the Wall of Fame, while the AKG 812 is not, and the X1 went on there with a 500$ price tag, whereas now its price is abot 200$--- But i wonder which headphone is brigthter, the 702s or the 812s? I woul really like the 812 to be like a perfect mix of X1, HD600 and AKGK702, but there a lot of negative reviews in the K812 being to tinny and bright on top...But i didnt try them yet, so this just what i perceived from the all so famous internet ^^

I use to work in the recording industry. For years the k240 was the go to headphone. Still a great headphone. The bigger more expensive AKG headphones I was never very impressed with. Heavy, didn't sit right, etc. From my experience I wouldn't fell comfortable dropping big dollars on AKG. They built a great reputation over the years. Now instead of being innovators they just survive off that name they created. BTW listening on a set of Alpha Dogs. They seem to be my go to headphone now when sitting at the desk for long periods of time. Sound good, great isolation and comfortable. If I am in a quiet space I like the hifiman he-500. Sounds very good but they are heavy and only comfortable for like an hour or 2.

What about creating a headphone that is based off of the top 10 world famous headphones, using the amplitude median point of each headphone as a zero point, chart the frequency responses and average them accordingly, this is a flagship I want to hear. In actual fact, I don't know why every company doesn't do this with their own products, as it is a method of progression.
@derbigpr500
@derbigpr500 10 жыл бұрын
Because it's not possible to create a headphone like that. And what would be the average or all flagship headphones? How can you make an average of LCD3's and HD800's when they have completely different sound characters that both excel at? You're gonna get a mediocre headphone thats not really good at anything and just average at everything.

Your smiley makes your vague answer particularly untrustworthy. I don't trust anyone using smileys on the net. But to the point, if it's about Sennheiser's "quality", they pretty much only have the HD600 (and HD800), anything below is inferior to the rest of the market. Kind of funny. And the HD600 is an ultra-conservative approach, very dull-sounding. (Somehow no-one else seems to bother to make headphones really balanced though, although plenty have better characteristics and approaches in some aspects.)

Different ear cups change the soundstage tremendously. For instance, it really surprises me why they would go with leather for the earpads. Yes it gives better bass response but Velour pads in my opinion bring out a bigger soundstage, bring the music closer to you. @zfehnel
@zfehnel 8 жыл бұрын
From all I've read, no. According to the writers over at headfonia, when you get up into "flagship" headphones, they all have standout characteristics which differentiate them from one another. For this AKG, it's the treble. For others, like the Sennheiser HD-800, it's extremely sensitive to changes in the source. The K812 has also been praised as the most well rounded of all of the flagship headphones, even with their pronounced treble. Believe it or not, that's a big deal. They all have their quirks. And from what I've seen, the AKG has caught an abnormal amount of flak most likely because of the high price it was introduced at. $1,500 US. Now it's two years later and I just saw a *new* set for $830 US, in my opinion, that changes everything. At the end of the day, find a pair to audition and trust your ears. TL;DR: Nah - Tyll just doesn't like 'em. Most everyone else does.

I would say "spartan" rather than cheap. Function over form in this case, in regards to lightness and ergonomics. Some parts of Grados throughout their line feel very cheap, but you can't argue with the sound. I would say unbalanced is a downside for sure, but the biggest disappointment is the impulse response for a studio headphone at this price point.

All due respect, what editing DAW or Console are you using these on ? You can't take these and use them with a mixed (colored) recording, then play it back on yet again another colored audio listening device, then you EQ yet again, into these headphones. And then still need to consider using it for DAW or Analog mixing and mastering, as they are meant for non colored editing... And these need break-in time, like any speaker. You probably damaged them plugging them into your ipod or phone,,, These range well above consumer frequencies, and would need some control on the low and high end, using on a consumer device... especially if the audio was not tamed at the spectrum above 15 kHz - 20kHz, Find a sine-wave and reference it using gear made to exceed 20Hz to 20kHz... normal human hearing (but many claim to hear more) and consumer limits for most devices... I would think using these in a correct usage would at least give the definition, but I would low and high pass creating frequency limits. If you don't like them, send them to me !!!! Please,, lol !!! TO Audiophiles, (respect), they do not buy flat responsive speakers, and neither does the basic musical consumer,,, They want EQ'd for consumer use Speakers made with a EQ curve based on tonal color... TO mix master engineers, they want a flat response, non colored listening solution for editing purposes using in an editing environment, using program equipment for this purpose. When they reference using consumer devices, they don't use their studio equipment, they use colored EQ'd devices and speakers to check translation out of the studio....

+Jörg Spiegelhalter www.innerfidelity.com/images/AKGK812SN001130.pdf Tyll already measures over multiple positions (grey lines on frequency response). It doesn't change much with position.

Use your own ears. Tyll has "sissy" ears in the upper frequencies. Have had and enjoyed the K812 with no issues that Tyll whines about.

I will Wirte the comment in German and english. These Headphones are the worsest which i had take on my Head. The soundness from my 8$ xiaumi in ear phones are better. And I will not compare These Headphones with the Beyerdynamics or older akgs it is If you compare a Ferrari with a horse ! The salesman Had just said, it normal, since Harmann has bought AKG ! For the old model will Take away Credit to get them ;)

Why the hell don't you get a better mic? Looks really bad when a guy is trying to review 1000$ headphones on a 10$ mic. Just makes you look bad and lame.

Anitrex006 Tyll's new vids have much better audio. And I don't think he holds onto many of the cans he gets for very long - they are usually borrowed. He said this in his Reddit AMA, iirc.

Well, that sucks. Most, if not all, $1,000+ headphones are just overpriced and can be easily mimicked or surpassed by cheaper models.

Umm....not really. Try mimicking or surpassing the performance of HD800's or T1's with a sub-1000 dollar headphones. Won't happen.
@LordVictorHalgaard
@LordVictorHalgaard 10 жыл бұрын
No. Not even close. You can get headphones with similar soundsignatures an properties, but the shear amount of resolution etc. of most of the 1000+ headphones is not something many below that threshold can even get close to if you listen carefully.

On the contrary most $1,000+ headphones have qualities that can't be mimicked. The problem is they all have one or more glaring flaws that don't make them as well rounded as they should be.
@derbigpr500
@derbigpr500 10 жыл бұрын
Peter Hasselström Well I wouldn't say they all have glaring flaws...that's more of a personal preference. But no headphones regardless of price range can be completely well rounded and do all things equally well, at least not until high end headphones start incorporating digital sound processing that will use the inherent physical properties of the headphones and its sound characteristics and work around them in order to tune the sound to a specific genre...but it will take some time until we get to the point where DSP won't ruin the sound but simply make it better. I don't really understand why it's not done already...we've come pretty much as far as we can get in terms of passive headphones anyway, now its time to figure out how to make them sound like speakers and give a totally out of the head experience without fucking with the tonality like most DSP's do nowadays. But then we'd need to have music players that would send signals into headphone DSP processors and have them automatically change the settings that would fit a certain genre of music more. That would be a game changer if done properly and not only as a gimmick.

derbigpr500 That's easy. The T1's have a treble emphasized signature which makes it sound overly analytical and artificial. The HD800 is similar to a lesser degree but has a great sense of imaging and soundstage to counter act that flaw. Anything with emphasized treble is easily considered to be more detailed or higher resolving to the untrained ear which seems to be the majority of you who have replied to my initial post. I have heard various $1,000+ headphones and no, just no, they do not offer anything more than what I've heard for under $500. This is simply expectation bias and the need to justify spending excessive amounts of money on gear that doesn't perform any better in real world scenarios. Also, there are headphones or IEM's that out-measure the HD800's and therefore will resolve better.

Wait.. You didn't work these cans, and then you complain about harshness? Fool. Good headphones need to be 'broken in', these more than most. Give it 100 hours of music and it's an all-round world of difference. You haven't even scratched the surface of what it sounds like and that harshness completely fixes itself.

Nelson Chu Besides the fact that his complaints about the harshness were an obvious indication for not having worked them in, I saw the review on his blog and saw that he had only just acquired them new.

+Johnny Natrium He's been doing this for a long time. I would assume that he goes through the same process with every pair of headphones he tested. spikey trebles can be part of a sound signature. He also stated that he has mentioned his concern to akg design team. I would assume something as simple as burning in the cans was entertained. I'm sure they tried every method possible before AKG sent him a second pair to confirm the issue.

+Johnny Natrium Headphone burn in doesn't exist. It is psychological and any real changes are so marginal that it is within the margin of error. What happens is your brain adapts to the change in frequency response.
