Everard had the same problem with Magnorail....it's a pathetic product and noisy as hell

jeff lloyd Blimey, you don’t have much patience do you Jeff, the first day of it running and already it’s pathetic and noisy, no wonder you haven’t any content on your channel ! I’m really not interested in what Richard did or didn’t do on his Magnorail although creating one as long as he created is asking a lot from it. So I suggest you come back in about a months time and see if it’s pathetic and noisy then! 👍🏻. Cheers for now. ...........Graham

Jeff, I have four MagnoRail tracks at different parts of my layout. What Richard, over at Everard Junction, attempted was well beyond what the system was designed for. I do watch and enjoy Everard, but from the start Richard was expecting to much from his design. I have two auto runs, a bike/push cart run, and a boating run. Dependant upon how we install the track runners, chains, and surface used adds to the noise level. I use foam noise reduction to limit the tracks vibrations. It works. As far as, "It's a pathetic product," I recommend you view klatchco56 out of Australia or csxmad from UK to see how the system can be used in quite imaginative ways. At present I and friends, from one of my RxR Clubs, are experimenting with a track to move people. The figures ???SHOULD??? move along the walk way. (i.e. police on the beat, postman delivering the mail, children playing baseball, people carrying groceries, and such.) Soooo! I wouldn't say the system is pathetic. It more depends on how imaginative the modeler can be over a short line. ~Jim

Instead of painting paper I used p160 sand paper it is the correct road colour and you get a smooth texture avoing the issue of the paper bubbling or wrinkles. Great update and the layout is looking awesome 👌 👏

Jeff I think you must have been run over by a bicycle as a kid! The Magnorail System is unique and clever people use it to create real magic and story lines on their layouts. Magnorail have just released newer motors with higher torque which have reduced noise levels, not that they are distracting anyhow but if you are looking for peace and quiet - don't animate anything! Even Faller Cars get a whine to them as they get older plus you are forever having to keep them charged. As with all technologies you can adapt and as the Magnorail motors hang under the track, they do amplify any noise through the baseboard, so the easy way to deaden any noise is to pack them with fibre fill that you find in cushions - just don't tell your wife where you got it from! Check out the other 200+ Magnorail videos on my channel and just see the positive applications along with Grahams great work - I think your statement that Magnorail is pathetic should be challenged by the hundreds of layouts where it is happily entertaining people with its unique bicycles, and in my layouts case, speed boats and water skiers - -Ahh the Magic of Magnorail!. -Clyde KZfaq - klatchco56

@@MagnorailOz Good to see you sticking-up for Magnorail and taking an interest in how people like Graham use it. I wouldn't have bothered justifying Magnorail in this paticular case though: whoever Jeff Lloyd is; he's a watcher and certainly *not* a do'er. To dismiss an excellent, imaginative product because you're too thick to work out how to operate it properly just shows why the guy has nothing on his YT channel and probably doesn't own a train set, far less a working layout with a Magnorail track. Cheers for now, Dougie.

Hi Graham. That was a great demonstration of how you are going to have the magnorail operating. I can just imagine how difficult it is to get it all working the way you want it, but I know you will succeed in the end, like you have done with all your different projects. A lot of work still to do but it's going to look fabulous when it's all up and running. I like the idea of showing lakeside inside youe barn in ultra miniature scale. Cheers for now mate........................Geoff

TRAM JUNCTION Hi Geoff and thanks for the comment mate. Yes, I have no doubt that this will all work fine in the end, others have done it successfully so there is no reason why this shouldn’t work out. I have other plans which I am working on right now so hopefully they will sort it. But this is all the fun of modelling and it would be boring if everything worked first time, I like the challenge it gives me. I have always wanted the model railway image in the garage which is why I made it with a removable roof so it can be seen inside when it’s lifted off - the trouble is I haven’t had a chance to finish a layout to put one inside yet! 😂😂. Cheers for now mate and speak later. ..........Graham

Graham, ONCE again wonderful workmanship ( your background scene is LOVELY especially the big rock side in the middle !!! ) on what you have done so far... Now, as for your idea for a mini layout on the top of your model garage is BLOODY wonderful and I think I have an idea to even make it better for you. Change the cardstock roof to clear plexeglas then with a black fine pen trace the shingles from the cardstock on the plexeglas so you can see the layout through the " false " roof... Yes, I know I am nuts telling the " Master " how to do things!!!! Once again, you are doing a WONDERFUL job, sure wish I could get back into doing my layout !!!

Hi Graham I have a Magnorail cyclist on my exhibition layout and after some experiment I settled on using Metcalf asphalt sheets, they are just thin enough to work well and yet strong enough to stay straight. Like all paper products though they are affected by moisture so if we’re at an exhibition where it’s raining outside and there are a lot of wet people about, the cyclists can start falling off at the joints! As far as noise goes, we can’t hear the Magnorail above the exhibition background chatter!

Hi Graham. just watched your vid about Magnorail. I want to use it on my n gauge layout so I knocked up a spare piece of board to set it up on just to try it out. I had the same problem as you when I painted the photographic paper. So what I did was to download, from Scalescenes, their tarmac sheet and then printed it onto the paper. This worked much better and saved on the painting. It might be worth a try. Regards Richard Martin

Looking good. Wonder if thin sheets I’d polystyrene in stead of paper or some other synthetic sheets , that will take paint without warping would work just a thought. Love the routing through the garage. Maybe have it stop there for a few seconds and then kick off again. A reed switch that reacts to the magnets passing by to drive the auto off timer circuits would be easy enough. I do get a chuckle from the model railroaded disease symptoms; no matter what we just cannot help ourselves and end up filling the entire room as much as possible , with layout. Greetings from Sammamish.

Looks really good , I had the same issue with my magnarail in one of my layouts . Same exactly what you have , still haven’t sorted mine . Job on the list still , for the gaps I put tape on the underside of the gap and then painted it , that filled the gaps well and still allows you to gain access underneath . I’m trying to think, if there is a very thin plastic you can use . I’ve seen clear plastic used before , it’s just needs to be very thin. With painting I airbrushed mine

Great job with the backscene Graham; seamless, which the roadway isn't - yet.😁 A couple of thoughts for the road surface: if you were to stick with A4 sheets, what about computer-printing the road on before laying it? Personally, I think trying to use a single sheet might be the answer and, as others have mentioned, maybe spray the road surface, rather than brush-painting. Brilliant idea running through the garage, seems to work perfectly. I agree with those who've suggested putting some glazing in the roof so we can see the layout. 😁 With the changes to the road access to the container terminal, is your green road sign going to be "wrong" now? The "driver's eye" view from the cutting is going to be pretty impressive, the bank will be quite high. One thing I thought of for the bridge face under the bus with the puncture; you know the "pipe bridges" you sometimes see, carrying a water main, or a culverted stream, that might look quite neat and make an unusual feature. I don't think I've ever seen one modelled and it wouldn't be that hard to do. Just a thought.😁 I'll try to make this link work but it might be a bit long: it shows a great example of what I mean: - scottishregion.jalbum.net/1%20-%20Scottish%20Region%20-%20Line%20by%20Line/Central%20Belt/Newbridge%20-%20Glasgow%28E%2BG%29/Falkirk%20Area/Redding%20%2B%20Laurieston/slides/Redding66194.html Cheers for now, Dougie.

Well Done Graham Have you thought of using a roll of grease proof paper (The stuff your wife and mine using in the oven) that would give you a continues road and it would be slippy underneath but you would have to spray paint the road on or just cut out the profile of the road it would limit your joints to four. I've seen quite a few people having problems with Magnorail and A4 sheets of paper to cover the chain tracks. I haven't seen anyone use what I used with no issues. Lining paper for wallpapering. It comes in a myriad of thicknesses and is designed to be painted. there are very few joins (Unless you have one heck of a huge road system!) and as with the paint it glues down easily. just go over the top of your road colour with a couple of coats of dullcoat (Gives a nice surface for the vehicles and stops the paint scuffing off)

Graham, I would be inclined to use plastic for the road, it won't wrinkle/warp with paint or use enamel paint on paper?. Another option for a single large sheet, is plotter paper, as there is a vast range including coated, plastic laminates and pure plastic rolls, may wind up to be too much for a 30m roll though! lol. Just food for thought. The in and out of your own garage is insprationl!

Just a thought - what about wallpaper lining paper which is quite thin and comes in rolls - ie no joins which seem to be the main problem. That said I am confident that all will be resolved at the end of the day. The way the layout is progressing it looks as if there will just be a small 3' x 3, hole in the middle for you to sit!! lol !!! Keep up the good work and look forward,as always, to your next update. Murray Hall Hi Murray and many thanks for the comment, I have now taken the paper up and put down some 1mm acrylic sheet which works a treat, hopefully you will be able to see that on the next update. You are probably right that in the end there will be a small hole for me to operate the layout - pretty much as I did on the previous layout but that seemed to work ok and will of course give me plenty of photo and video opportunities to be able to see a large footprint rather than just a layout going around the outside of four walls. That’s the plan anyway! 😂😂. Cheers for now mate. ............ Graham

Have just purchased a magnarail set to try with myself? I've seen other fok have had success with thin sheets of plastic. I've managed to get hold of plastic sheet 0.4mm thick and will have a go with that. I suspect the biggest challenge will be getting a realistic paint finish that doesn't degrade too quickly. You've probably got the better idea using paper to be fair. Not too concerned about noise - I'm sure we'll both do what we can to minimise it with cork and foam etc but ultimately the loudest thing on a layout will be rolling stock rumbling by. I only have 2 locos - both pump diesly type sounds out of little speakers and I have two little sony wireless speakers playing the sound of a river and the other plays livestock noise. Plenty enough there to drown out a chain ticking away!

When I was at school we used a technique in our art classes where you would wet the paper and then masking tape it to a wooden board while it dried. That’s stopped it then curling when you painted it as the paper fibers had already stretched and dried in a stretched position.

Chris Dodd Yes, I did that too Chris, I may experiment with that on this paper too but for the road I think I need to get a roll of paper or at least A2 size is I can cover the board in one sheet to eliminate the joins. As I said, this is very much an experiment at the moment trying to find the best solution - wetting a large sheet may be the answer, we’ll see. Cheers for now mate. ............Graham

A great start, the bikes stayed upright, you did a wheelie and spin turn plus a few jumps, wow are you emulating your earlier cycling years? Seriously though you have created a really interesting twisty cycling route, not bad for a chain driven system. Increasing the grammage of the paper or going to card might be another thought. Love the way the low relief back scenes blend in, yours or commercial scenes? Stephen

hi graham its looking really great i wonder if you sprayed the paper with a grey car primer on both sides with very light coats the primer would dry very fast and hopefully would not make the paper bumpy when you pain the road surface onto it also another thing you maybe could try is matt inkjet vinyl and again this could be primed and painted without the worry of it getting bumpy if you thought that one layer was not enough then you could us a few layers and this should build up the strength over the chain area just a couple of thoughts hopefully you will get the issue sorted hope this helps a little regards james

Hi, regarding the road. Have you considered using photo paper from a 24inch roll and printing the road surface directly onto the roll. That could alleviate the wet painted surface and obviously no joints. Kind regards.

I have tried and others have used Polycarbonate sheet. Smooth side down against the chain and Painted on top. One will have nothing but trouble using paper products. Every time water gets close to the paper it will deform. Just a suggestion....

It probably is old hat to you but Interesting for us. Cheers great work.My wife drives a white VW EOS convertible is it mid wife/ life crisis?

Hallo Graham. Maybe a strange idea, but why don't you design some roads on the computer that you can paint and then print. You can of course also add various paving stone effects such as square edges and the like to the design, and the road can also add aging effects in your design ... Keep in mind that a printer always comes out differently than you think. ... Good luck

Well I gather your the front bike Graham, too much whiskey before riding I see lol. Ahh all new things have teething issues but great concept and I can imagine the outcome :). Now other test when you do the scenery are you going t have to just paint the paper where the bikes trail along (aka the width of the tyres and turning area only) then scenic scatter the rest on the path, OR will the magnets be strong enough to allow you to place scenic scatter down for the bike trail, just a thought and maybe worth an experiment. Otherwise I really didn't hear the manorial running much, I suppose you may if it is flat out, but at low speed is what is need really :). Overall looking fantastic even in design mode. Cheers (with a beer in hand myself) to an upcoming scenic success from yourself my friend :)

That's a really good start to the village Graham and not difficult - even at this early stage to see what you intend to do. It's going to good to watch it develop and improve. Is the Magnorail one-way or can it be reversed? Love the back scene work by the way. Thanks for the update mate, cheers, Ian

Hi Graham, thanks for another great video. When you have finished installing the magnorail system, it would be really good if you could give us all an honest comparison between it and the Faller system. Obviously, only the magnorail can enable bicycles to be used but for those of us who are considering a system for motor vehicles, your unbiased opinion on both systems would be invaluable as you are working with both. There are are numerous reviews of both systems available but generally, most are biased towards the system that the reviewer has chosen to invest in. You of course have both so the question will be, if you were starting again and you were buying a system for road vehicles, excluding bicycles, which would you choose?

Great content and video, Graham. This automated systems take a while to work out the little kinks, but they are wonderful when done. I couldn't tell from just the bikes, but did you get the peddling figures (whose knees actually go up and done on the pedals) or the static ones? Thanks for another view into your world! Cheers!

Hi Graham, Thanks for all your videos, really helping me in getting my first layout in place. Quick question regarding track spacing? I notice near the station its around 50mm between track centres,,, but the rest of the layout looks 67mm? Have I got right? Im not sure what to do myself so asking people I am watching. Thanks, Carl

I don't know whether you have thought of airbrushing the road Graham? How about very thin plastic card👍
@GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston 4 жыл бұрын
Mark Franks Hi Mark, Magnorail do not recommend plastic card, I could try airbrushing in very light coats which I did think of doing as it should dry as it hits the paper without making it damp. I have several ideas up my sleeve so I will try them to see what results I get. The main thing is that I have the chain working without an issue -mits just the covering I need to sort out which I will do given time. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham
