Glad i`m not the only one that has a Dog that wants to join in on the video. Lol. I have the same thing with my 108 DMU I thought the lights had packed up but you can just see them on with the room lights off, A bit to subtle for my liking.
@GrahamFoulston8 ай бұрын
Hi mate and thanks for the comment, our dog always seems to know when the video camera goes on! 😂. The lights are a bit of of a joke to be honest, you really have to look hard to see if they are on or not during the day, I will have a go at making them brighter at a later stage as there isn’t really any point in them at the moment, they are hardly visible but I have had the same with a few of my other Bachmann sets. Enjoyed the video and like you took a punt on eBay and delighted with the model. I was lucky and apart from a bit of a clean of the wheels, all works perfectly including the lights! Delighted with her and brings back childhood memories of these units on holiday to Margate with headcode 50. Keep her as a coupled set if you can as you won’t want to be undoing those coupling clips any more often than you have to…

Hi John and thanks for the comment. Glad your eBay purchase worked out for you too. Yes, I will keep the coupled up because they are a pain to keep coupling them up. @GrahamFoulston8 ай бұрын
Hi Stephen and thanks for the comment, I take photos as I go along if I’m opening up a loco for the first time so I know exactly how things go when I get to putting it back together again. If you are methodical and put things in a logical manner on the work bench and with the photos then it should go back together again relatively painlessly but just be careful of the plastic parts as they can break quite easily. It’s not difficult to be honest, you just need to take your time and don’t rush it, they are the only words of advice I can give to be honest but don’t be afraid either, have the courage and you will succeed ! 👍🏻. I specialise in Southern Region - across the years up to todays prototypes - and Bachmann Southern image EMUs are an essential part of my layout. They are the best around (lets see how the retooled Hornby 4VEPs look and run when they come out). It was a good choice and buying second hand isn't a problem if you know how to service a model, as you obviously do! I grew up with these things running down to Brighton on my local main line which was electrified before WW II. As a result I didn't get to see many steam locos when I was growing up!
@GrahamFoulston8 ай бұрын
Hi Peter and thanks for the interesting comment and I’m in pretty much the same boat as you, when I was a kid growing up then my local station to me was Three Bridges as I lived in Crawley, and so the majority of trains I saw were electric rather than steamers. As a family we would be going by train to either Brighton, Victoria or Croydon which is where my love of the Brighton Belle stems from. We could never afford to go on that but I could dream about it each time I saw it! 👍🏻. Cheers. ………..Graham
@peterm75488 ай бұрын
@@GrahamFoulston Like you I grew up near the Brighton line in South London - my local station was Wandsworth Common and then Norbury when my parents moved a bit further out in 1960. I also saw the Brighton Belle often but never went on it. When I was little, my late and wonderful grandmother used to take me to Clapham Junction where I could watch the Waterloo to West Country Bullied Pacifics go past. Great memories. I also have a load of them on my layout! Looking forward to seeing the completed canal feature.

An overall good video here Graham on your service it process for this model, I actually have one of these bachmann 4CEP EMUs except mine is in the blue and grey livery, remember getting it for only £150 at a shop in the Blackpool area a few years ago now, it’s a good model overall, keep up the great work Graham.
@GrahamFoulston8 ай бұрын
Hi David and thank you for the comment, well I certainly paid well under that price of £150 but then yours was new and mine was secondhand but visually it looked brand new with no signs of usage at all, I think it must have just been bought and then stored as there were no marks on the wheel sets at all. Anyway, with the gearbox and motor now duly serviced then she runs a treat and I’m really happy with it apart from the very dim lighting which they all suffer from apparently. Cheers. ………..Graham
@davidstrains49108 ай бұрын
@@GrahamFoulston sorry graham but I should have mentioned the £150 I paid for mine is actually second hand, the shop that I got it from only does second hand models unless it has changed in the last few years, at the same time I bought the 4CEP I had also bought an old tender drive hornby 7mt Oliver Cromwell which was about £60, can understand your criticism of the lighting, on mine it only seems to be the end coaches with dim lighting, the two coaches in the middle have much brighter lights on mine.
@GrahamFoulston8 ай бұрын
@@davidstrains4910 Hi David and yes, mine is the same, the middle coaches seem to have brighter lights in them than the two end coaches but hopefully I will have a go at changing them to a brighter light. I had the same issue with my Class 350 and for some reason, Bachmann had put like a silver foil over the LED’s probably to aid in not making them so bright, so I took that silver foil off the LED’s and bingo - all was ok, you could now see that the light were on. I will take one of the coaches apart today and see if they have done the same thing, if not then I will look at changing the lighting completely, that’s the only thing letting this model down now. Cheers.

Hi Eddie and thanks for the comment. No, I didn’t do a ‘how I did it’ video only because there are so many videos out there of folk weathering buildings that I didn’t bother to be honest, but all I did was to use some Woodland Scenics Earth wash and dry brushed it on. Don’t be too painstakingly painting it with a small brush - it will look too contrived) use a wide brush with hardly anything on it and with a cotton bud, just wipe away any excess before it dries. THE PROBLEM OF MODEL MOTOR LUBRICANTS ! There's nothing wrong with the motor in these Bachmann 4CEP's. I've got three of them (12-car formation), running on an exhibition layout in a hot dusty climate !!! It's the Grease that's the problem. Once Centrifugal forces throw the grease off the spinning armature bearings. Being grease it does not go back where needed. Hence motor screaming ensues !!! I've always used Fleischmann oil on ALL my locomotive motor bearings. Thousands of them from British, European & Japanese manufacturers, for over 40 years. Because this is the only oil made specifically (by Mobil Exxon) for 12v DC motor bearings with the correct Viscosity. A single pin prick of oil on each bearing is all that's needed !!! Indeed being a real Railway Engineer I can remember the problems BR encountered when ordering a thicker grease (from Mobil Exxon known in Britain as Esso then) for certain moving parts in certain locos. Only to find this didn't help at all, as an oil was what was eventually found to work far better. Because unlike grease it stayed in the bearings far more reliably !!

If the lights do not work in one coach try turning it round or change position with the other centre coach.
@GrahamFoulston8 ай бұрын
Hi John and thanks for the comment and that’s pretty much what my first choice will be is to turn the two middle coaches round 180 degrees, I can’t change them over though as they are meant to go in that configuration. Just a thought Graham, with people commenting on the same lighting problem, could there be a specific order for the coaches to run or a certain way round they should be. Reminded me of Rod Hull wrestling with an Emu....Hat and coat ready by the door. Cheers, Bob
@GrahamFoulston8 ай бұрын
Hi Bob and thank you for the comment. In the instructions then it clearly states what order the coaches should be in - which they are so it’s not that. But also some folk are saying that some of the lights are dim which again, they are. However, I am in the middle of correcting that as I’ve found the reason why so I may do a further update video showing what I’ve done to solve the issue - as long as it works of course! 😂. Cheers. ………..Graham

Hi Graham, lovely units but like you found a real pain to open for maintenance, little tip, I grease the connectors between coaches just a tiny bit, makes them come apart and go to together easier and seems to prevent corrosion on the connections. Is there a clip at the front and back, I've not had mine open for ages and can't recall. Cheers Mike
@GrahamFoulston8 ай бұрын
Hi Mike and yes there are clips front and back on the sides which are a pain to get to but it can be done. As I’m sorting the lighting issue out then I’ve had these apart and together again quite a few times now so it’s getting easier each time as I now know where the clips are. One little tip from me and that is on both end coaches then unclip the corridor connection from the front of each end cars as that will help you with taking the body off from the chassis. Hope that helps and good luck! Cheers. ……….Graham

The 4-cep is arranged a certain way as per the instructions which means you see the curtains on three coaches on one side and one corridor. If it isn't set this particular way the lighting in the other 3 coaches doesn't work. I can do a shot of the relevant page if you want me to.
@GrahamFoulston8 ай бұрын
Hi mate and thanks for that but I made sure that the coaches were in their correct order as per the instruction sheet. If you viewed the set from the other side then you will see all the curtains showing, the curtains are not visible on the side you are seeing because of the corridor - which obviously don’t have curtains. What I will do though is just turn through 180 degrees to face the other way and see if that works, it will be an easy fix if it does but thanks for the constructive comment though buddy, really appreciate that! 👍🏻👍🏻.
