Emerald Urethane is Sherwin Williams top of the line paint, but is it a good value?
At a retail cost of $90.00 and a sale price of $60.00, what exactly are you getting that is different from less expensive paint?
To be as objective as possible, I test all the paints in the same way. I test for:
Workability
Coverage
Finish
Washability
Durability
Emerald Urethane Satin Workability
How well the paint works is crucial because it affects productivity and can reduce fatigue. I’ve broken workability into 3 criteria. They are as follows:
Ease of brushing
How far does one dip of a brush spread
Working time of paint
Like virtually all premium paints, Emerald Satin Finish paint is straightforward to work with. It spreads quickly and can cover 30-34” with one dip of a brush.
In addition to brushing quickly it also, Emerald Satin has a generous working time. I was able to return to previous brushed areas and touch-up up to 2 minutes later. Having extra time to touch up reduces damaging the sheen as it begins to dry.
Workability 10 out of 10
Emerald Satin Coverage
Emerald Urethane Satin Coverage, one coat versus two
Emerald Satin has good coverage. It will cover most colors in two coats. Other Sherwin Williams paints such as ProClassic Acrylic Alkyd and Cashmere covered better.
Coverage 9 out of 10
Why doesn’t the most expensive paint cover the best?
Paint manufacturers make a multitude of paints to fill consumer demand. One type of paint might be created for excellent washability, but the chemicals cause the paint to cover less to be the most washable.
There has yet to be a paint that has every feature, including price; however, there have been a few paints that I do give all perfect scores to.
Emerald Satin Finish
The finish of Emerald Satin and Semi-Gloss are both slightly sandy. I could not get a smooth finish even after sanding between coats and wiping clean with a micro-fiber cloth.
Finish 6 out of 10
Emerlad Urethane Self Leveling
If you are painting kitchen cabinets, it is imperative that paint levels out as much as possible. Many of today’s cabinet paint from PPG Ultralast, Ben Moore Command, and Advance all self-level beautifully. So much so that it can be difficult to tell if the color was sprayed or brushed.
Emerald Satin Washability & Durability
After curing the paint for 2 weeks, I applied six products to Emerald Satin Finish and cleaned it with various light industrial cleaners.
The cleaners used are light industrial cleaners; Spray Nine, Krud Kutter, Simple Green, and bleach and water combo.
The catsup, mustard, pencil, crayon, coffee, and red wine all dried on the surface for 48 hours.
All stains were removed after repeated cleanings. The was no damage (durability) to the surface afterward, and the cleaning chemicals did not soften the finish.
Washability& durability 10 out of 10.
The Most Difficult Challenge: Kitchen Cabinet Durability
The most challenging task for interior paint in a home is to stick to kitchen cabinets. The oils from cooking and our fingertips may eventually penetrate the tops coats of paint and break the bond between the primer coat and the topcoat.
With Emerald Urethane Satin's finish, that is not an issue. I wiped Crisco oil on kitchen cabinets and let it sit for 12 weeks. The surface is still challenging and durable.
On the other hand, cabinet-grade paints such as Emerald Urethane Semi-gloss and ProClassic Acrylic Alkyd did scratch off.
Emerald Satin paint from Sherwin Williams is easy to work with, covers well, and has exceptional washability.
I love this paint except for the way that it feels. It has a sharkskin feel to it, which bugs me.
The few places I could recommend using this paint would be restaurants. Unless they are drunk, customers generally don’t touch the walls.
Having a rough finish is a real deal-breaker for me. At $90.00 a gallon, expect a beautiful smooth surface. FYI Emerald Urethane gloss does have a smooth finish.
Because of this one issue, I give the Emerald Urethane Satin finish a final score of 8.5

Very nice review and very thorough in your testing approach, especially that you didn't rush it and let it properly cure. On my last kitchen project I used BM Advanced and was very very happy with that paint. However, it's impossible to get anymore, same with Emerald. I had a bathroom vanity to do and took a chance on Home Depot's Behr Urethane Alkyd in Satin. Mixed feelings about it. I would be very curious to see how it fairs in your testing.

I would have to disagree with with it leaving a “rough” surface. I’ve used this trim paint on many jobs and I thought the same thing as first but turned out it was just dust in the air settling. Since this product has a longer drying time than many other paints I believe that when removing masking and/or opening and closing doors allowed that dirt and debris to settle and dry with the paint. I lightly sanded the surface with 320 grit, cleaned and recoated paint then allowed about an hour for the surface to dry before removing masking and it was very smooth almost like a cured epoxy. I could be wrong but this is my opinion on the paint.

Question about the feel ‘bite’ you described to the finish- how did you apply? The most I felt that way about this paint was when I sprayed it… I ended up realizing I used too small an orifice size on the spray tip… I thought maybe that was the cause, I think when it’s brushed it’s not too bad of a feel for semi gloss at least

Painted kitchen island 2 yrs ago with this. I would not recommend. Degreased, sanded, primed, brushed and rolled 2 top coats sanding in between. Started to chip after 1 year....I'm not a pro though. Just had kitchen cabinets repainted by a pro this time. Used Renner 2k...hopefully optimistic.

Do you use shellac-based primer on cabinets because of shellac's stain blocking attributes? Also when something says "stain blocker" does that mean keeping stains that are under the primer coat from bleeding through as well as keeping things above or on the stain blocking coat from being able to permanently stain the paint? .... in simple terms is it only blocking stains under the coat or is it blocking under and above?
@klappenbergersonpaintingha2933
@klappenbergersonpaintingha2933 Жыл бұрын
I use Shellac because it fuses with lacquer finishes that are on the surface of kitchen cabinets. Stain sealer blocks old stains from penetrating.

Going to brush/roll BM Advance on my kitchen cabinets, but was considering brush/roll SW Emerald on interior MDF doors & MDF trim due to faster dry & cure time. Your thoughts? Go with BM Advance all the way?

Hi Ed, Command is equally as durable as Advance and costs less. It also dries in about 15-30 minutes. It self levels about the same too. If you roll make sure you back brush to knock off the roller nap. I invite you to subscribe so you can here more product reviews and tips and tricks. Thanks!

I just did a whole building with 5 apartments. I used this paint (semi gloss) on all of the trim, doors sills and bathroom ceilings. I thought it could have had a touch more slide when feeling it but, didn't dwell on the topic I just sprayed some cabinets black in the satin. Primed with extreme block oil and sprayed with one heavy pass black onto the white primer. Im letting the doors cure a bit before they go back on but here's a walkthrough after I was done spraying if you want a chuckle. Mild potty mouth here and there but, it did not have one curtain call... also Im not a video guy so no nagging on the quality.. Ill follow up when the doirs are back on. This stuff feels as close to a factory finish as you can get in the field imo.... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d6-ZnrKZm5mXj30.html
