Guess that's why a play can pull the heart strings stronger than a movie. Forever with me.

A Sidney Lumet-Arthur Miller classic that deserves a full restoration. What great performances, especially the female leads, Stapleton and Lawrence. Miller always pushed the envelope and he certainly did here, themes that resonate in 2017.

I just finished watching the entire film...I am SO APPRECIATIVE for your having posted it...WOW...the performances are RIVETINGLY REAL AND TRUE...and the "greek tragedy" that Mr. Miller realized with this story-who's film version is quite faithful to the play's text, (I even love when the screenplay extends the scenes outside of the Carbone home) is devastating and hauntingly moving. Thank you, SO VERY, VERY MUCH!

It's "received opinion" that "Death of a Salesman" is Miller's greatest play. But somehow "View From the Bridge" I find even more moving and powerful. The entire cast is first rate with thought out and detailed performances.

+alangranville284. The protagonist ends up dead in both plays, true.

My English teacher never allowed us to watch this adaptation of the book, as she felt it would leave us a completely different understanding of the play.

And that is the quota. For Eddie Carbone.

I saw the film when it first came out- over 50 years ago. It was wonderful then, and it is wonderful now. All of the stars are great in their roles, especially Raf Vallne and Carol Lawrence."Eddie Carbone." "Eddie Carbone." Why did he kill himself? Because his name was runined or because Marco shamed him by beating him up in front of the whole neighborhood? Or beacuse he couldn't have the girl?

+Sam73157910 All three are valid reasons. He lost his name when Marco spat on him in public. He is not as strong and physically fit at Marco, and because he lost Catherine. A tragic figure driven by insane and obsessive love for his niece.

He betrayed his own code of honor - and he knew it - and he knew he could never get his 'name' back.

This does not follow the original script though... In the script Marco is the reason Eddie dies. He kills him and by turning the blade inwards and Eddie doesn't commit suicide. Also, many things do not fit the script like in part 10 or so when he walks in on Rodolpho and Catherine. In the script he isn't carrying a tree.

That is correct. But who cares? For the most part the movie followed the play quite well. (Are you referring to the screen play of the film or the original play?) There is no requirement for the film to follow exactly the original play on which it was based.

Michael Cohen in the movie, the reasons why Eddie kills himself are because he lost his name when Marco spit on him in public, he’s not as strong as Marco and he lost Catherine. A tragic death due to obsessive love for his niece.

Eddie does commit suicide in the original play if you think about it
