Aramis it's basically impossible once you've done what you've done. You can't forgive yourself for those kinds of things. There's nothing that would ever make him forgive himself for letting his daughter die over the island, as well as him strangling Locke to death and killing Jacob

Strange how the murderer does not even dare to speak first, ashamed of what he did. It was up to the victim to take the initiative. Because of this, Locke was really special. And Ben was not.

Such a beautiful scene. What Jacob wanted was for people to make the right decision without anyone having to tell them it was. And through this scene, we can see that he succeeded. Ben can enter the church anytime he wants, but he chooses not to. He isn't being judged by anyone, it's his choice to right his wrongs and do what's right.

John Locke believed he was special. But nobody else in the outside world treated him as if he was special, his father treated him like crap. Then nobody in the Oceanic 815 believed that he was special or that special was even a thing (except maybe for Boone). When he found the first man who believed he was special, he murdered Locke for it. I believe Locke finally realized the irony of it all.

He was the only one from Oceanic Six who believed in the power of island and that he had a purpose there. And yet, ironically, he ended up murdered by Ben...We look perfection and life purpose our entire life, and in the end we receive nothing...death comes when you're not expecting😢 Locke was the most powerful of them all, that's why MiB had chosen him, to break him, just like Joker chose Harvey Dent to destroy.

John struck a chord with most viewers because he's the one we can identify with. Very view of us are renown spinal surgeons, former Iraqi interrogator, or international fugitives, but most of us want to be special, yearn for something spectacular or adventurous to happen in our lives to take us away from our humdrum everyday existence and wipe out the mistakes we made or hardships thrown at us.

What a daft comment. You don't need to be any of those things to identify with a character. It's like saying I need to be Korean to identify with Sun. Or a Sayan with crazy hair and a love for martial arts to identify with Goku. John was a great character, as there were many in LOST. It was your favorite character, fine, but no, it wasn't because of that bs. It was because it was well written. Period.

Yeah but he was in a lot of pain over the loss of his own daughter in that moment. You can see it in his voice, the anger, the thirst for vengeance. He wanted Charles to lose what he had. You can tell how much the writers adored Ben and how they'd developed him, he's not only the only villain who makes it through alive but they even give him what he always wanted a position under the protector. It's the role he always wanted to do for Jacob but was never allowed to. He's the new Richard essentially. It suits the new Ben far better than his old position of power which arguably led to him to become the selfish person he was for most of the shows length. It's a sad moment though when he admits he wasn't special. It's the thing he always wanted to be (making him very much like Jacob ironically) but never quite could be, despite claiming to be told he was by Richard. It must have been hard to be told all those things only for someone to come along who seems to be so much more special

@@bajscastTrue, it was spelled out clearly in the finale, but what I think really confused people was the b-roll footage of the plane wreckage on the beach during the final credits of the original airing. They just had some footage of the wreckage they shot before they had to remove it from the beach, and they thought by showing it, it would be a good way for viewers to “catch their breath” before the next program began. Unfortunately, because there were no cast members in the footage, many people took that to be the final “clue” that no one survived the crash. Not hard to see how people were confused. Personally, the fact that there were no dead bodies strewn across the beach (and if you look closely you can see the tarp from Jack’s original medical tent flapping in the breeze) in the footage negates that whole theory.

Holy shit I didn't even grasp that. The idea that teacher Ben became enlightened in this alternate life and aware of his previous life as Island Ben. And that he now had an entirely different outlook on Alex and Rousseau. So much to sift through with this show.

This "place" is not purgatory but more of a "way station". Ben stayed by choice. He couldn't quite accept who he had been in his life. He had to sort his actions out. That's what makes this so damn beautiful. He personally wasn't ready and wasn't being judged by some egotistic overlord.

shadowofthestatue I don't want to taint your sentiment, I think your comment is poignant. That said, I've always thought that God would be much more merciful to me that I would ever be to myself. That's my understanding of the Judgement anyway... it's not going to be a big scary throned old man sending everyone to the lava pits, it's going to be a kindly Father who can officially tell you your mistakes and bad choices have been forgiven and you can come home now.

I think, the reason why John decided to forgive Ben for killing him is the fact that Ben gave his death meaning. As Sawyer put it "Locke was scared, even when he pretended he wasn't". John hated being mediocre, he wanted so badly to be special and the island gave him that. When he wasn't able to convince anyone to go back to the island, he knew that he would have to go back to his old boring life, and it affirmed what he had always believed deep down, the fact that he wasn't special at all. Realising his entire life had no purpose, he decided to kill himself. When Ben killed John, he gave his life purpose, to save the island. This is why John is able to forgive Ben, because Ben made him special, and that is all he ever wanted to be.

Such a beautiful scene in the ending of my favorite show. My favorite characters, Locke and Ben…love Hurley, too. I understand why Ben wasn’t ready to go in the church…he definitely had some things to work out, lol. All props to Michael Emerson and Terry O’Quinn for making these complex, flawed, but deeply human characters come to life on our screen. Miss you, Lost…I’m glad you ended it when you did, and I feel privileged to be one of those who waited every week (or months on months on months) for a new episode…trying to figure out the many mysteries. I don’t know how anyone cannot think this wasn’t the greatest drama ever made.

Alanmarine1 I do not recall them atoning for anything. At least Ben atoned by working with Harley. You can see how much he changed in the sideways flash episode of Lost. For example he could have become Headmaster at the cost of his daughter (at least he did not know that at the time) going to college or he could step down and his daughter would get a glowing recommendation to any college. He chose the latter. A choice he would never have made in the past. After all did he not let his daughter died. Now John, Said, Sawyer, Claire, Charlie never atoned for their past murderous indiscretions. Said went on to murder a lot of people, John died before he could make up for his actions like killing that innocent girl and Sawyer never atoned for killing an innocent man in the alley way not to mention the consequences of cheating innocent people out of their money guaranteed he did hear his father murder his mother. How many innocent kids grew up to become just another Sawyer. What about killing John’s father in cold blood. Claire killed a man in cold blood with an axe because she believed he took her baby and Charlie murder a defenceless man in cold blood guaranteed he did hang by the neck earlier. Are you telling these people should go to to heaven….
@abbysands9510

Charity Diary I agree with some of thing you mentioned but I like to interject one thing Ben change began when he starting working with Hurley at the end of season 6. By the time he reach purgatory he was already a changed man. Although it was never shown until 2010 when a small clip was released showing him working with Hurley. A thing he would never would have done in the past. Recall the shadow monster read his mind and realized that he wanted to kill John (although not really John) and become leader again. In that clip he apologised for kidnapping Michael's son. The son forgave him and all three of them head back to the island that is Hurley, Ben and Michael's son. And finally the other's never atoned for their crime they should not be moving on. I think they are moving on to hell. The bad ones.

In terms of degrees of badness, Ben is definitely on the scale. Keamy killed anyone just to achieve his objective and was ruthless in doing so. Ben is closer to Keamy in that regard. Sayid killed out of misguided allegiances to some vague ideals. Ben killed Locke out of envy and spite. Sawyer killed out of anger at least 3x--the shrimp truck guy, Locke's bio-dad, and Tom Friendly.

We mustn't forget that Ben killed his own father on the island, as well as directly killing others as well (Jacob: Caesar: Widmore (Penny's father) and also Keamy (who is the guy who killed Ben's 'granddaughter'). That's the reason why Ben wasn't able to move into Heaven with the others in the Church. He had some more atoning to do before that could happen.

One of my favorite scenes in any show ever. I think the way the writers handled the ending of Ben’s character was particularly satisfying. He can do whatever he wants but he chooses to stay behind because he’s finally able to reflect on how he needs to grow, to redeem, or whatever else Linus is looking for in the sideways. On top of that when Locke says goodbye to him the lighting on his face says it all. Locke the man presented in the show as light and dark finally saying goodbye to his greatest friend / enemy and the way he says “goodbye Ben” feels more like the audience saying it then him. God I love LOST even all these years later.
