As an Italian I don't understand the hate against carbs. We eat them A LOT but we also move our bodies and eat everything else, and we're quite healthy. Maybe the problem is the portions? Or all the pre-prepared stuff/sauces that you have overseas instead of cooking them fresh? Also also, can we stop hating ANY food group? What do people have against a varied diet where you eat everything???

Honestly I think it's a misconception, it's more that a lot of the foods that are highly addictive generally contain a lot of carbohydrates which leads to a lot of calories. Carbs by themselves or in moderation are perfectly fine like any other macro

It's because it's been the in thing to hate on for awhile now. Just like for a long time everybody was eating fat free or low fat. Once one study finds something, no matter how poorly done the study is, everyone leeches on to it and creates the newest fad diet. But carbs are also found in a lot of foods that people will overeat, so they much be evil. And if you cut out carbs, you drop a lot of water weight, so obviously the carbs were super bad and making you fat. /s

I think for us Americans, the manufacturers make our breads sweeter overall compared to breads in Europe and other parts of the world. Thus eating more ‘carbs’ increases weight gain not due to the actual carbs, but the higher sugar intake overall. People just mistake it for carbs. But there also isn’t anything we can do about it unless we take the time to bake our own bread.
@Diana-qp2rw
@Diana-qp2rw 10 ай бұрын
I think the problem with carbs is, many people consume too much carbs for their lifestyle. Especially people who don’t work out a lot don’t need as much carbs as the average of them consumes (and let’s be real, especially in the US many people don’t move nearly enough). But just because most people should probably eat a bit less carbs and more protein instead, that doesn’t mean carbs are bad. However, diet culture only deals in extremes.

maybe i'm just a drama queen but i actually love when you get really negative about these horrible bits of "advice" and "tips". people who ask you to be less negative just don't understand the damage being done here. these people are actively harming people's health and self-image and don't deserve the benefit of the doubt. not everything should be met with sunshine and rainbows. that being said, i think your approach is really pragmatic and i think your attempts to inject positive commentary are super sweet!

@@micky_knuckles agreed, plus i hated how liz seibert responded to abbey's criticism. she completely ignored all of abbey's legitimate advice and just hit below the belt with the ridiculous "dependence on pharmaceuticals" bit. obviously, these people aren't going to be charmed out of their negative habits - if anything, they're just going to make senseless claims when they know they've been cornered. so why try to sugar-coat it, you know? if the creators themselves won't react well to brutal honesty, it will at least wake up the people who have internalized those disordered views

@@micky_knucklesabsolutely vile ableism. Depression is a complex disorder with many causes and cofounding variables. Diet changes can help some people, but if we treated all depression with diet and exercise alone, we’d have a lot of unalived people. I’ve had patients develop type 2 diabetes who are slim, exercise and eat a whole foods diet etc. Diet and exercise reduce risks of certain disorders but don’t guarantee never getting sick.

'it's only healthy in some areas of the world' is the weirdest logic around fruit I have ever heard. What's being closer to the equator got to do with anything? Where fruit naturally grows doesn't change its nutritional value if its eaten in other parts of the world.

@@xpnkxpacx I live in the UK. Even so where are you getting your info that fruit and vegetables are unhealthy because they contain lots of chemicals. Everything is a chemical if you want to be technical about it. Fluoride is in lots of countries tap water and was added to reduce tooth decay in the population. The levels are extremely low and is not cause for concern. If you are referring to pesticides used on nonorganic fruit and veg, when you say chemicals, again generally not a major health concern - wash your fruit and vegetables throughly if you’re really worried. You are still making a healthy choice if it’s not ‘organic’. It can’t be labelled organic if it isn’t - it’s against the law (it is over here in the UK at least).

@heykelleyx
@heykelleyx 10 ай бұрын
Hi! I’m a nurse and worked nights for a good chunk of time. If I was in a phase when I was experiencing more nausea, I would pack myself snacks to munch on through the night rather than a meal. Things like hard boiled eggs, jerky, cut fruit, veggies with dip, cheese, crackers, protein bars, trail mix, yogurt with granola etc. If I needed something warm, I would bring oatmeal or one of those protein muffin microwave kits. Or just a snack-size serving of something like pasta. This approach really helped me be much less nauseated. You grab a snack when you have a chance and use your lunch time to relax or have another snack. I know that it can feel like you’re not able to get away long enough for even a little bit (esp right now) but know that your patients need you to be well nourished in order to best take care of them :) and any hospital that forces you to take assignments that allow for no break time at all is one that you need to leave. You will find another job elsewhere.

I am on a low carb diet, and so far I've lost about 100lbs, but thing I have always been confused by, especially from diet influencers and 'nutrition' channels who treat carbs like the devil. I didn't walk into my 'diet' with a low carb mentality. I actually don't really consciencly restrict carbs. I still eat pasta, mashed potatoes, and whole host of other staples pretty regularly, like once or twice a week. My low carb diet actually came about because the biggest thing that made my weight loss journey work was counting calories, and I would often drop things like dinner rolls, and even breakfast breads to eat more of the things I actually enjoy, like meats and cheese. Like I had someone ask me how I can "eat a banana" because it "has so much sugar." Like babes, I just eat it because I want it and it fits into my calorie allocation for today. I get this alot even when I go out to eat. "how can you eat that, aren't you watching your diet." Like: "yeah debroah, but I don't have garlic parm wings every day, and some fatty fried pieces of meat once every so often isn't gunna turn my legs into ham shanks, I just eat consciencly and track my calories every day." It has blown my parents and my friends minds when I started losing weight eating "unhealthy" foods like ground beef and a whole host of cheeses when I actually planned my meals around my nutrient needs and picked foods and made recipes that fit into my allotted calories in a day. It's crazy that people think eating a SINGLE donut will make you fat, or heaven's forbid a banana or an orenge, because "All carbs bad."

She's clearly thriving in her connected-to-nature-lifestyle in general, but when she takes those ideas to the extreme with her nutrition it bothers me. She's so bubbly and confident that I'm scared impressional people will be easily influenced by what she says, even if it has no base in evidence.

The “going to the bathroom an hour after a meal” thing isn’t entirely wrong. There is a phenomenon called the gastrocolic reflex where when the stomach is stretched by food a signal is sent to the lower intestines to increase motility in order to start preparing for an increase of contents in the intestines. This often results in an urge to have a bowel movement within an hour of eating a meal. In much of society, however, we learn to ignore this reflex because it often isn’t acceptable to have a bowel movement at that time. Many people also don’t eat enough fiber or are hydrated enough for the bowels to move contents efficiently and so are chronically constipated

1-3 days for food to pass is only when you eat animal body parts, because our digestive system is not made for meat. If you look at the length of the intestines, ours are extremely long as in other herbivores, in order to break down grains and vegetables and get nutrition from them. Meat is just rotting in there, that's why people who eat a lot of meat, either get the runs, and their poop stink disgusting. When we only consume plant-based foods, we poop regularly every day, and it's not very smelly + we don't get the runs.

Talking about liquid food I find interesting how a soup is so much more filling than the ingredients separately. I normally make my cleaning the fridge soup every Saturday lunch. The thing is if I gave my family the cooked ingredients separately they would still be hungry after the meal but everyone is perfectly happy after soup. Why is that? Love your content!

The "fruits only at the equator" influencer seems to have no clue where food actually comes from. There are fruits that grow in the arctic circle (i.e. cloudberries, arctic raspberries, & lingonberries). Many of the common fruits in grocery stores and our diets prefer colder climates and would not produce anything in a tropical climate (apples, pears, cherries, raspberry). Many like apples REQUIRE a cold winter period (called a chilling hour requirement) to trigger flowering the following spring and thus fruit production (there are a few heat tolerant apple varieties but they yield less and dont taste as good). TLDR: edible and nutritous fruits grow all over the world, even in cold climates. Some fruits prefer cold climates.

I live in the Netherlands and have to say that in winter and fall I forget very often to eat sufficient food because I am not craving it. In spring and summer and especially during very warm periods I can't eat enough fruit. I am not buying the 'if you live further from the equator you need less fruit" thing, but I was just wondering if there is some kind of connection between the amount of suger your body uses in the heat. I mean, in winter time I like the heavier meals and you wont make me happy with a salad and the summer is the other way around. I know this is because in the winter your body uses more calories to keep your body warm. I was just wondering if something like this happens with suger in the summer

My guess is it’s related more to the temperature of the food itself. When it’s cold out I want a nice warm meal, not cold or room temperature fruit/ smoothies. Whereas when it’s hot outside I want something that seems refreshing such as fruit

That whole fruit equator thing is so silly considering human migration. Both me and my husband come from places close to the equator. But he's ethnically African, from Africa. 👋🏽 great Video. I recently read on a fitness influencer’s who is on an ozempic jpurney Instagram the following healthy cooking swaps: 1. Olive oil instead of sunflower or canola oil 🤔 2. Himalayan salt instead of normal salt 🤔 3. Butter instead of margarine 🤔 4. Honey instead of sugar 🤔 5. Veg stock for cooking veg for instead of oil or butter 🤔 6. Dry Rub instead or marinade 7. Cover meat with foil instead of basting. 🤔 I realised that some of these aren’t bad, but some just does not make sense - why don’t you just steam your veg? Veg stock may be too high in sodium. The honey and sugar thing 🙄 The foil cover vs basting - unless you are using a separate basting sauce, it would be the same. Any thoughts?

Margarine and canola oils really are not healthy. They are highly inflammatory. Canola oil actually used to be engine lubricant but then they found they can tweak the processing slightly to make it "edible." If you watch how it's made, it is toxic sludge.

Food can in fact effect the ph of your of your blood! That is, in cases of ketoacidosis if you're diabetic. Otherwise, the lack of food can effect your blood ph in cases of starvation induced ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis makes your blood more acidic. It's a pretty painful experience. When I had starvation induced acidocis, eating ANY food made my blood more alkaline. But anyways, if they were living on lemon water or alkaline water or whatever and little else, they'd be a lot more likely to make their blood more acidic than more alkaline. And I don't recommend it.

Wellll fruits grown in Central America taste totally different from imported fruits AND especially fruits I tasted in London. Gosh what a horrible taste they have, they're like cotton candy and I just couldn't enjoy them. Here tangerines have real flavor and aren't pieces of sugar. They're probably the same in micronutrients but I know for certain I'd rather eat them here.

I know that I don’t, and it is impossible for me to live in the same place as my ancestors did, mostly because they lived all over the world, so I would probably have to pick one to live in first and then move to the next one and so on. But even then, no fruits for me if i follow that one’s beliefs system.

I know it's poking a fire and it's already a topic touched on a lot but.... I've been seeing some high fat carnivore diet stuff recently that I'd love a dietician reaction on because some of it is crazy.... This woman I follow claims and believes that you poop less on the carnivore diet because "beef/meat is completely dissolved by the body and you pee it out" 💀..... I feel bad naming names but I'll give it if asked (or is there a better place to give names/channels to react to?)
@shawnmarieVnutrition
@shawnmarieVnutrition 10 ай бұрын
I think you poop less because what your eating is pretty nutrient dense and has no fiber. The meat get's almost fully absorbed and utilized by the body. There's not much left after the body takes what it needs. My IBS totally healed on a carnivore diet and I can attest to what she's saying. I've never felt better and would never go back to the sad American diet. I guess now there's two of us who believe this!
