One of our greatest female vocalists. She is not an opera singer. Her genre is Broadway and movie hits/ballads But she does cross over into the pop and disco genres too.I she started out in the 60's and starred on Broadway in the hit Musical Funny Girl. She starred in the movie version as well and also the movie version of Hello Dolly. The song she is singing here is from the Broadway hit musical "Cats". This song was originally done by Betty Buckley on Broadway. The story behind this song is this is an older female cat who is dying she's has singing about her life. It's a very beautiful, but sad song. Barbra sings this song every bit as beautifully as Betty Buckley did. ( If you are interested, there is a video of Betty singing this from a live performance) Barbra is a huge star as a vocalist, actor and film director. If you look her up you will see the movies she has been in. She does equally well in comedies , love stories and dramas. She did the remake of "A Star Is Born" with Kris Kristofferson in the mid 1970's. The remake Lady Gaga did a couple of years ago is the 4 th time the movie has been updated. Barbra Streisand songs: The Way We Were, Papa Can You Hear Me, Evergreen, Dont Rain on My Parade, People. Duets with: Barry Gibb ( from the Bee Gee's)... "A Woman I Love" Duet with Donna Summer: "No More Tears/Enough is Enough." Duet with Neil Diamond.. " You Don't Bring Me Flowers Anymore" Barbra is a national treasure. She ijust turned 80 and is still going strong. She is an EGOT award winner...An Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. There are just a few that have won all 4 of these awards.

From the Broadway show - Cats. This is '81 Barbra and a semi-hit. Barbra was a big movie star having as a pop singer and like 19 movies in the 60s, 70s, 80s. 90s. 20s.10s. She did it all .... comedy movies, love dramas and musicals. She was a pop singer who first song was in 1964 and already had a Greatest Hits album released in 1970. She is a Diva and did Jazzy, bluesy to movie musicals and Broadway scores, love story movies also starring in them. Very early 80s here and a traditional Broadway musical song .... she had pop hits from most of her movies but for some comedies. Like others said... she won virtually all types of awards.

You picked a good song. I believe she had 50 something songs that hit the Billboard Hot 100 and had 5 #1 singles and 13 top 10 hits. She has had songs on the r & b charts, country charts, pop charts, and had several disco hits that hit the disco top 10. I think you would probably enjoy her disco duet with Donna Summer called No More Tears that hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and on the Disco Charts or her song called Woman in Love which was written and produced by Barry Gibb from the Bee Gees. That song hit #1 in about 20 countries and was her biggest worldwide hit. She has been an actress in numerous movies, the one most of the younger generation remember her for is called Meet The Fockers. She won the Acdemy Award for best actress for her first movie called Funny Girl. She has had a #1 album on the Billboard Hot 100 in every decade since 1964 when the Beatles first became known and successful in the United States. A lot of female singers look up to her as the first artist to do it all in a male dominated world. It's a huge rabbit hole but you will not be disappointed, the song you reacted to was from 1982 and was one of her lesser known songs.

Oh are you in for the ride of your life, Ace. There isn't a bad song in this woman's repertoire. She is considered by many as the GOAT and she has sung just about every genre out there. You're about a decade off on this one... it was released in 1981. Barbra is the only artist ever to chart an album at #1 in SIX consecutive decades. Her acting (both comedy and drama), and directing career is just as impressive. I've just subscribed to your channel and hope to see more Barbra reactions from you. You are about to embark down a truly remarkable rabbit hole. As Barry Gibb once said...'There's the 10 best singers in the world, and then there's Barbra Streisand.' Pretty much sums it up.

Her roots are in Broadway, but she's done everything from jazz-inflected pop to mainstream pop to disco and has had a #1 pop album from the 60s on, the only artist to have accomplished that....This song is from the early 80s, the musical Cats. Everybody from Jennifer Hudson to Barry Manilow has sung it but IMO this is the definitive version (with apologies to Elaine Paige)

Sorry for the late comment - just ran across your channel. Barbara Streisand is an EGOT - a winner of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award. There are only 18 EGOTs so it's kind of a big deal. There are so, so many songs of hers that are amazing, but if you want to hear her hold a note, try On a Clear Day (You Can See Forever), from the movie of the same name. At the end, that note goes on forever. I'm sure there are others, but I remember that one particularly.

This song is from the early eighties, 1981, and that vibrating sound you correctly noted in her voice is a standard Western singing technique called vibrato. And you seemed to have a positive response to an instrument that came in toward the end of the song at the end of the line, "Touch me. It's so easy to leave me all alone with the memory of my days in the sun." That instrument is an oboe.

I personally would not choose this song as an introduction to Barbra Streisand, unless they were into Broadway showtunes, as this song is from Cats, the Broadway musical. Depending on the listener... I would recommend No More Tears (slow/upbeat), The Way We Were (ballad), Woman In Love (more upbeat), Somewhere (it's a showtune but done in a different way), Evergreen (ballad).

This is from the Broadway show, Cats, so not really opera. She's performed in the musicals Hello Dolly, Funny Girl, Funny Lady, and Yentl, so you could say this is mainly the style of music she's most known for. But she's also done a lot of pop and disco. She's even done duets with Donna Summer, Barry Gibb, Celine Dion, Neil Diamond, and Kris Kristofferson. Cats came out in 1981, so it was likely written in the late 70s by Andrew Lloyd Weber. Barbra released this version of this song on her Broadway album in 1985.

With all due respect to the fabulous Barbra Streisand, she is most definitely NOT an opera singer (take it from an opera singer). However her voice is so versatile and may I add gorgeous, that she has sung almost every other style successfully. She began get career as a Broadway belter, transitioned into a pop chanteuse, dabbled in disco, and sang others. She is one of the few recipients of the elusive EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony). A true natural talent, she is very "at home" here singing the hit song from Andrew Lloyd Weber's hit musical, "Cats".

It seems incredible now but her first singing job came when she won an open mike night at the New York gay bar "The Lion" in 1960 and it was a swift ascent from there, beginning with nightclubs to a small scene stealing role in a Broadway show then her first album (which won a Grammy for Album of the Year) to starring in the Broadway hit "Funny Girl", a series of hugely successful television specials, followed by her recreating the role in the film version of Funny Girl (and winning an Oscar for Best Actress-shared with Katharine Hepburn in the only tie in the category's history) becoming a Top 10 box office star for the remainder of the 60's into the 70's. After that she only made films intermittently focusing more on her recording career. She is the only female to have charted an album in the Top 20 in every decade between the 1960's through the 2020's. Obviously her catalog is vast so the easiest way to begin a journey of discovery of her magic is to check out her biggest hits and then dig deeper. You chose well with this as your first, it's a fine spotlight of her strengths. I'd suggest the next songs to check out are her five that went to #1 on the charts-"The Way We Were" which was the theme song of one of her biggest film successes (she was again nominated for Best Actress for the film), "Evergreen" (which she co-wrote), "Woman in Love", "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" (a duet with Neil Diamond) and "No More Tears" (a duet with Donna Summer). That's just scratching the surface though.
