I'm 31 and I've done 6 years active and 4 yrs reserves. So here is why I like reserves better. I like making more money than being active. I am SSG in the reserves. I can go on a deployment just about anytime I want to, but I'm also a Lt in corrections for my state and a substitute teacher. I like my schedule and I have no degree just yet. I make $70k just as Lt. and I make addition $1k a month substitute teacher assignments on my days off. I also make +$300 from Army Reserve monthly. Even with all that going on with myself I have way more time to finish college than an active soldier. Because at the end of the day many active duty commanders deny your tution assistance documents just because of stupid training. Not to forget everyone can't do 20 fucking yrs of the same ole controlled routine. Also many people never physically make it 20 yrs in the Army because of health issues. Lets be real unless you have what it takes to be a 1SG, warrant officer and plan to be extremely dedicated then you are wasting your time active. I can be flexible with military assignments. At 50 I can retire from corrections with a $31k pension, pick up another career and retire again with Army reserves at 60 and retire from another govern job (for example police clerk) at 60. If you stay active for 20 yrs you will more than likely start a family and you can kiss that earning a degree on your spare time crap goodbye unless your kids are older. Next you have to deal with military spouse bullshit like her not having a job and you having to split your check with the whole family been there done that it's not that fucking great. I rather have my wife working a stable good salary job. Heck she makes $55k a year. So let's total this up. My salary total is about $88k My wife $55k The benefits we pay 300 a month for Tricare-select (Army benefits) Live very close to a military installation so free gym membership and access to the food commissary (very cheap)! Cheap flights Bought a house and not moving all over the place because the active duty said so.

I'm going reserves in less than 30 days as a Seabee EO. I'm joining at 39, at which reserves is the only choice. The benefits for being a reservist as a small business owner with a family are greater than not having the benefits. Great videos Nicky!

I'm contracted full time support leaving for boot camp in April. Likely Fire Controlman. I appreciate you talking about full time support because I didn't know about it until they offered the contract at MEPS. My recruiters Chief Petty officer is actually full time support, so I was able to talk to him and get a good idea for it before I signed. Great videos. Thanks for uploading!

reservist here, what I can tell you from my experience is that if you don't have anything going on at home go active, e3 and below in the reserve don't get any love and there aren't that many opportunities, some rates like HM, MA, YN, PS LS.. are great if you are looking to be busy with mobs and deployments... ANY AVIATION rate... stay away from the reserves , go active first. you are Going to seat at the nosc watching the years fly by. don't join and think you can go active, you have to wait at least 2 years to be accepted into the program... even then it goes by what the big navy needs, and guess what they always need CS, MA.... other rates will require your rate allowing you to cross rate.... IS A MATTER of right place at the right time to be able to go active..... also being hot shit in the reserves

I recommend that everybody go active duty first. This will get you veteran status, VA healthcare, veteran hiring preference, GI Bill. Being a vet will change your life. Then go into the guard/reserves to finish out your 20 years. If you go into the reserve component and never get called to active duty you will not earn your veteran status. If you never get called up, you will get nothing out of it other than some educational benefits while in drilling status. Go active first

Totally different cultures. Not uncommon to see 21-22 year old E5’s in Active and 41-42 year old E5’s in Reserves. Reason being is many people opt to join Reserves later in life or have a long break in service from active duty. I think one of the keys to Reserves is to avoid the Operational Support Units and join a Reserve unit that directly supports active duty. It also helps to be close to a Navy installation as opposed to being at a NOSC in Oklahoma, Nebraska, etc.

See this is where Im getting torn. Im working as a nurse but not a bachelored nurse, so I know being an officer is not an option rn. I have two more years but I want to jump in ASAP but i know if I try to enlist now theres a chance I may not be given anything medical as my job choice. I just got out of Active Duty and I'm looking at joining the Navy Reserves when/if you were drilling at your NOSC did you still have NKO's or PQS/ Qualifications that you have to obtain same as if you were on Active Duty or what exactly do you do during a drill weekend? I been thinking about joining for almost 2 Years now, I have a daughter that is 4.5 months. I been putting it off for many reasons, but in recent I have been considering on joining for the medical, and financial benefits. Don’t get me wrong I do want to serve. I’m just stuck between if it’s worth it for financial means? Is reserve better in terms of “best of both worlds” mainly medical expenses, or is full time better because of housing allowances, legal fees, and medical? I'm about to go to head to Meps on Thursday 17th of October 2019...I initially planned to join full time enlisted but due to paperwork delay and new fiscal year and my picat score being just below a 50, my career counselor is recommending reserve and doing FTS. Do you know how hard the process is to switch from reserve to active duty? Recruiter said you can request to switch after 12 months...but I've read mixed statements on that. Also is full time support essentially full time duty inside of part time being that it's reserves?

I think the employers HAVE to allow you to come back. I am also fairly certain that they cannot refuse to hire you for that reason. In other words if someone is in the reserves and they apply for a civilian job the employer cannot say I will not hire you due to being in the reserves. I mean I guess they could not hire you and give a different reason or just not say, but they cannot not hire a reservist and give that as a reason.

So, I just signed a HM/FTS contract today because my recruiting chief told me that it was the exact same as a regular Corpsman contract. I'm now finding out just how different it is, and I want the active duty opportunities. Can I still get an active duty contract?
