Prince Rupert had a varied career. He was a soldier as a child. Aged 23, he was appointed commander of the Royalist cavalry during the English Civil War, becoming the archetypal "Cavalier" of the war and ultimately the senior Royalist general. Following the Restoration, Rupert returned to England, becoming a senior English naval commander during the Second Anglo-Dutch War and Third Anglo-Dutch War...

Another set of shoulders that founded the work we live in today. The British Navy had contractors all over the world as early as Rupert's time; America's George Washington sold finished rope, barreled meat and whiskey to the Admiralty prior to and some time after the American Revolution, as did other early Americans. Thank you again for another great presentation.

Yes, that is true indeed. Rupert was one of the most fascinating and interesting characters in an age blessed with interesting characters: best cavalry commander until Murat, great admiral, administrator, inventor, scientist and supporter of science, metallurgist and talented artist who invented the mezzotint technique. I would have loved to know him.

Excellent Lecture, Sir. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Perhaps we can discuss Blake at some point too?

Thank you for the idea! Yes, absolutely. Though he was far lesser figure and was completely outclassed by Maarten Tromp. Nevertheless, he was an interesting character and admiral. It may make an interesting video- thank you for the idea!

I don't know if it's the same man, Prince Rupert is a well-known name in Canada, there is a town named after him in British Columbia. First governor of the "Compagnie de la Baie d'Hudson" in the 1600s whose stores bear the name "La Baie" today. Looking forward to hearing what you have to say, to my knowledge he was an inventor.

Yes, Sir, it is the very same man as he was one of the most determined explorers and sponsors of exploration

In his biography of Andrew Marvell, The Chameleon, Nigel Smith says that Marvell and Prince Rupert were friends. Marvell is now known mainly as a poet, but he had many interesting roles: tutor to the commander of the New Model Army's daughter Mary Fairfax and friend and colleague as Foreign Secretaries of Milton and Member of Parliament pre and post Restoration. Smith gives no real evidence of their friendship and I wondered if you or anyone else knows of such a connection?

This is very interesting comment! Thank you! I know him as a poet, of course, but didn’t know he was a tutor, too. I have no evidence for it either. Rupert was renown for liking people that were direct, including previous opponents. He was not afraid to speak his mind, for sure. One of the reasons Pepys disliked him: Rupert openly criticized the Navy Board and the clerk himself for corruption and failures. Let’s not forget that dear Pepys - now considered a hero and fighter against corruption - managed between 1661 and 1666 to save 1500 pounds on a salary of 200 per annum! If anyone can explain to me how this is done without theft and corruption, I am all ears. Rupert is one of the most fascinating characters in a period very rich in fascinating characters!
