The 1970 Interzonal was held in Palma de Mallorca from November 9-December 12, and was the last Interzonal held as a one-section round robin. With the tournament swelling to 24 players and further expansion on the way, future changes were inevitable. The following players vied for six slots in the candidates matches to be held in 1971: William G Addison, Miroslav Filip, Robert James Fischer, Efim Geller, Svetozar Gligoric, Vlastimil Hort, Robert Huebner, Borislav Ivkov, Eleazar Jimenez Zerquera, Bent Larsen, Milan Matulovic, Henrique Mecking, Dragoljub Minic, Renato Naranja, Oscar Panno, Lev Polugaevsky, Lajos Portisch, Samuel Reshevsky, Jorge Alberto Rubinetti, Vasily Smyslov, Duncan Suttles, Mark Taimanov, Wolfgang Uhlmann, Tudev Ujtumen..
Ujtumen from Mongolia, about as outside as an outsider could get, actually held the lead by himself after round 3. However, reality and Robert J. Fischer set in, as the American quickly soared to a dominating position. The other contenders didn't worry about it too much; after all, you only had to finish in the top six to qualify for the Candidates, and there was even a seventh spot open for a reserve. So they played it safe, while Fischer kept working hard.
At the quarter pole following round 6, Fischer had 5.5 points and a 1.5 point lead on Geller, Gligoric, Larson, Panno, and Ujtumen. But then came a bad stretch: he managed to draw lost positions in round 7 and 8, but Larsen didn't let him off the hook in round 9. By now the lead had vanished, as Geller joined Fischer at the top with 6.5.
That led to the critical round 12 encounter between the leaders, Geller holding a half-point lead and playing the White pieces. Any normal grandmaster, when Geller offered an early draw, would have accepted to get an easy half-point closer to qualification. Fischer, hungry for a win after five rounds without one, refused.
Geller played inaccurately and lost a pawn, reaching a difficult rook ending. Eventually, a hallucination and a final mistake sealed his fate, and Fischer took the lead. The rest was a matter of technique: Fischer won two more in a row, took a couple of draws for a breather, then started his famous streak with full points in his last seven games.

Absolutely. Fischer's games are very instructive in that once you understand the ideas they seem very simple and easy to learn. I would say that if someone wants to improve their chess and can only learn from two players in the past they should study Fischer and Capablanca's games.

I think long term compensation. Fischer's pieces are stuck in the first rank while black can easily continue attacking. For a better answer we would need to have a chess engine analyze the game and find out if there was a win by not taking the h1 rook.
@digitaurus
@digitaurus 6 жыл бұрын
I agree. Makes no sense as only a few moves later Matulovic loses the knight with a fairly lame exchange for a bishop. Agadamator says the engine was very keen on the fork. Maybe Matulovic just missed it!!
@lewperez

chances are matulovic was scared to take it, because fischer offered it so freely.. maybe he expected some sort of weird trap, without seeing it.. chess is a mindgame after all.

Perhaps because Fischer would've created a beautiful pawn chain. At the same time, that knight on D3 is a monster and, finally, he probably decided to favor development Other than that, I don't know

To me it was a no Brainer , do the fork on f2 and grab the rook. But then I'm a very average player who grabs material and trades down whenever possible . No way did I see all the possibilities that matavolich saw.

I'm confused (not the first time!). At the 4:39 mark on this video, why did the Knight NOT go to "F2 Check", to get White's Rook? Even with the Knight trapped in the corner, why not trade a Knight for a Rook? (Good videos!)

In all the Fischer games in this series, I think this is my favorite defense against Fischer's consistency. It's really quite extraordinary to seize and hold initiative as effectively as Matulovic did here. I am quite curious how it would have played out if Matulovic chose to take the rook on h1 and fight it out with better material.

I just had to watch this again, & I had to comment again, too! :) Matulovic pulled such a beautiful maneuver posting up on d3! Wonderful strategy - if you can manage it. And against Fischer, no less! But I do have to say: I think I would have had to take the Rook! After exchanging Queens *_and_* Bishops on d3, you know the Knight can't hold there forever. After looking over this again, I would have had the goals of: 1) taking the Rook! 2) castling King's side 3) getting my other 2 pawns on light squares (a & e) 4) having my Bishop fianchettoed, and 5) getting my Rooks to the d file. It would take even Fischer a few moves to marshal an attack. By that time, I think I would've been well ready - especially a Rook up (minus a pawn)! Anyway, I'll never know! Thanks again! Rikki Tikki.

Thanks! I have had the benefit of some good advice from books, I suppose, as I view a draw as a peaceful & honorable ending to a well-fought game. I say this because I know that many casual (& some serious) fans & players of chess want what most sporting fans want: *_blood!_* ;) I know that you yourself see (& I hope many others will see also) the value of Matulovic's keen ideas, which netted him a draw against Fischer. In most really enjoyable chess games - & especially in those played at the highest levels - there are so many layers upon layers of ideas! It's hard to conceive that such complications could exist on 64 little squares, with 32 little pieces of only 6 kinds! What a wonderful, convoluted thing chess is! Anyone can learn the basics in an hour or so, but no one (and I mean *_no one!_*) can ever, ever truly & completely master it. I hope they pass a law forbidding quantum computers from ever tying to solve this game (assuming such a feat is even possible!) Perhaps one of the keys to avoiding evil A.I. will be to convince it that humans need something they're not very good at; something that's not 'solved' for them or handed to them, so that we can grow & strive & create beauty in this world. Thanks again. Rikki Tikki.

Since you never even mentioned it I imagine there is something terribly wrong with it but... After the Queens are traded why not play Rook to d8? Or Queen side castle, as black? It protects the Bishop/Knight (after the Knight moves to d3), develops a good piece, and later seems slightly better than attacking the f pawn with B,a6. If anyone could let me know what I missed, because I have obviously overlooked something important since Agad didn't even mention either R,d8 or Queen side castle until way later PLEASE let me know, Thank you. Good Bye Everyone!!! P

5:09 why not grab the rook? Wish you would have delved deeper into that position.. I did and I did not see a reason not to. It was crushing but I am not a Grand Master so I assume I overlooked something.

I would call that a "beautiful draw", against Fischer no loss is always good... win is great, draw is beautifully done! :-)

Would have loved to see possible variations after grabbing the rook but I know that's too much work for agadmator, since i'm not going to do it either ;)

Not often you see Fischer make a blunder by being greedy for a pawn :)

I would have grabbed rook. Fischer was lucky but fearless too.
