I'm with you. After hearing this reaction as a major complaint about the movie I was surprised actually. Most people probably get this dark vibe due to the cheap instagram-filter all over the movie. That being said, I really liked Man of Steel.

I think those are a different kind of Dark considering they're R rated movies but in this sense....I think on a non R rated movie would be about it's serious tone that is being used.

AKAHimself The only 'dark' concept that the Man of Steel inherits is its gray atmosphere and the gloomy texture of the visual effect's color. Conveying the ubiquity of hope and the genesis of a new dawn does not constitute malice as most perceive it to be. It is sad how nostalgia substitutes one's likability of cinema rather than enjoying the film for what it is, not for what it is supposed to be.

There isn't a person who goes to see Star Wars that won't also go see avengers age of ultron. However, everyone who goes to see avengers won't necessarily go see Star Wars. That's pretty undeniable but nobody raised it. Star Wars keeps rolling out movies and they stink. I'll still see it, but I'll rent it from my living room on my laptop when it's $2 on iTunes. Christopher Nolan's Interstellar looks amazing! That's a movie I can't wait to go see, by the way!

You guys need to understand that board games go way beyond monopoly and battleship. There are likely thousands of new games coming out this year at Essen alone. They have themes ranging from organized crime to pirates to discovering a new continent to the Cthulu mythos. All of which would make a great story. A common stigma board games carry. Stop buying board games at Walmart. There's so much better out there.

Gamer Pip The only board games that have enough name recognition to reach a wide audience would turn out to be horrible movies. All of these new board games that have come out may be fantastic games, and some of them might even be able to supply a good movie narrative, but they just aren't popular enough to be given a movie.
@gamerpip493
@gamerpip493 9 жыл бұрын
It seems like Hollywood is scraping for new ideas lately. I think audiences would embrace the unfamiliar. I think that was a big part of Guardians of the Galaxy's success. It was a new story. Unlike another spiderman movie where you already know what is going to happen. I could see a great movie based in the Arkham Horror setting for example...
@Sharikacat

Gamer Pip If the problem is Hollywood unoriginality, then adapting even obscure board games certainly doesn't help that. If anything, it would just be viewed as a desperate move.

I cannot believe they said Man of Steel was depressing. It's okay if you didn't like it, but depressing? It's the story of a young kid growing up through complications of not being like everyone else and finding the strength to overcome his fears once realizing its up to him to save the human race. I was smiling throughout the whole film amazed at the visuals and fight scenes and especially at the end when we see him as the iconic Clark Kent character while Zimmer's score ends the film at full volume.

It wasn't a feel good superhero story like the original Superman from 1979, but a depressing, reflective finding-ones-self story...with a lot of people dying and a city getting leveled.
@swanpride
@swanpride 9 жыл бұрын
It was depressing because I always considered Superman a beacon of hope and there was really not a lot of hope in this movie. In fact if Superman had never been send to earth, none of the destruction would have even happened. I was pretty much stumped that Superman was treated like a hero towards the end. It would have been different if he had a clear, pre-established history as a hero, but as it was, I would have been pretty pissed off with all Kryptonians that they are not able to fight out their conflicts on their own damned planet, because they were stupid enough to destroy it. (And what did they want with earth anyway? Couldn't they change one of the other planets for their needs? Jupiter is way bigger than earth!) It was not really dark, though. More senseless. It was like an overly long discourse over the difficulties of being Superman.

I'm sick of the Hawkeye bashing by youtubers at this point. Yes he wasn't as big in the Avengers as the others were, him being mind controlled didn't help, but people just seem to think that that was all Barton has to offer. Clint Barton is one of the most important and loyal Avengers ever, on top of that if they used his character to its potential he could be huge (see Avengers:EMH). Its kinda got to be this hipster thing that if you mention you Avengers you have to mention how Hawkeye didn't have a moment like Hulk did. Give Hawkeye the space to show how awesome he is and he would surprise everyone, just like Cap did in Winter Soldier.

I don't think Guardians of the Galaxy was a good sci fi movie. I liked it, I think it's a good _movie_ but not a good _science fiction_ movie. I disagree with the idea that GotG scratched the sci fi itch. Even though Marvel has a huge following, I think Star Wars could still end up on top. Star Wars is an icon of human culture, there's a huge fanbase behind it, whereas Marvel seems to have gotten its bulk from newcomers that got sucked in by the newer movies and have no familiarity with the comics.
@Fortstorm
@Fortstorm 9 жыл бұрын
Nathan Holstrom Ok true, Star Wars might not technically be a sci fi series, but it contains everything people love about sci fi. Giant space battles, advanced technology, spaceships, hover-everythings, aliens etc. The only real difference is that there's no attempt to link it to reality. Frankly, I don't think proper sci fi will ever be more than a niche thing because most people won't actually know enough sci to understand the fi.
@sillymcwilly4866
@sillymcwilly4866 9 жыл бұрын
Star Wars isn't really sci fi either... well the films anyway, it isn't until you read the books and play the video games when it becomes sci fi and even then it's more fantasy. Guardians is the same way, until you read the comics it really doesn't hit that sci fi button.

Flame war inbound. I preferred the prequels. Luke skywalker had no individual character traits he was just a chip of the block good guy. And vader betraying the emperor was dumb and came out of nowhere. Besides grievous and darth maul had better designs in my opinion. BTW I was alive for return of the jedi.

Chica the Chicken why are you saying flame war? it's what you want? Vader bertraying the emperor is like cliche asf dude, but not dumb. Vader just felt emotions to his sons. Grievous and Darth Maul had better designs because... year of creation of the prequel trilogy with the original trilogy is way off different. Bruh

I'm twenty and grew up on both generations of Star Wars. Loved all the old ones. As for the prequels 1 was my favorite movie in the entire franchise 2 was OK 3 was beyond terrible. I'm on the fence about seven. I've also read the entire Age of Ultron comic storyline in the Age of Ultron compendium book I got at my local comic store and I don't think a movie can really do it justice, or Thanos for that matter. All in all, though I think the Avengers will be better than the new Star Wars. Also, I totally grew up watching Pee-Wee's Playhouse.

yodog1446 Not that I think you're wrong, but I do see a possibility of the Captain winning. I mean in the comic book universe he is a master tactician and also pretty smart. Physically he is incredibly strong and has peak reflexes. In the movies, while Iron Man was badass and Captain was shit in Avengers, in Iron Man 3 Tony was a quite a bit worse. His suit ran out of batteries!? It fell apart when a truck ran it over?! Nick's comment on how Captain America is America is right in the sense that (in the fictional universe) he embodies that American ideal, courage, and strength. He has the support of the public. Also if the Ultron movie makes it so Stark is held responsible for all of the destruction then he will have a lot of enemies. Not to mention that Cap has experience fighting in World War II. He is a weathered warrior. If they keep improving on Captain America's powers in the movies then it will be an interesting fight.
@yodog1446
@yodog1446 9 жыл бұрын
I don't hate him because I differ in opinion with him, I hate how his arguments are full of logical fallacies and how he argues about things he knows nothing about. Dan on the other hand logically lays out his opinions with information and facts to back up his talking points. And I believe Cap can lift about 1000 to 2000 pounds while on the other hand Tony's typical suit can lift 50 tons and his stronger suits can lift about 100 tons (in the 616). That means Tony is at least 50 to 100 times stronger and this is suppose to be a one on one fight with standard equipment and in both the 616 and MCU Cap is not coming back from that alive if the match is to the death. I love the Captain probably equally in the 616 and the MCU but Iron Man's equipment is far superior to Steve's training, unless there is some freak occurrence or Tony gets cocky, which puts him in a compromised position, the fight goes to him hands down

Chewey989 I understand that sentiment, even if I cannot ditto. I would be the same but it also depends on the household you grow up in. Mine, my parents were big Sci fi nerds so there was no escaping the Trek or the original Star Wars (especially Empire Strikes Back, which my dad would watch at least once a saturday every other month or so.) Even for little kids today I have several long-time friends with children who have been sufficiently exposed. However the PERSISTENT AND PROLIFIC quality of the Marvel Universe has certainly engendered its position in the late 2000s/2010s Pop Culture Pantheon--to the point where your statement easily holds merit for a large portion of the demographic.

All of my previous suggestions seemed to have been listened to for this. So I'd like to say thank you to Screen Junkies and the Schmoes Know for listening. Board games aren't irrelevant, shitty boardgames from the 70s and 80s are irrelevant. There's an entirely new spate of board games created by good designers - and they have beginnings, middles, and ends. Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Agricola, Smallworld - the old days of shitty board games that slog on forever and ever are mostly relegated to people who have not bought a board game in decades. Having said that, a movie based on a board game is almost always a dumb idea, and tends to just get pasted onto an existing concept. You'd have to pick one with fairly unique theming in order for it not to seem like a dubious connection.

All good board games. I was kinda ticked off to hear them complaining about how "bad" board games are. that said, I do think a movie loosely based off something like Resistance (the indie board game, NOT the video game) can be fairly successful. Just takes tactical espionage and stuff, making it into a thriller spy movie where everyone is out to get everyone.

I agree with your first part and it did make me mad that they could only list out dated games from the 80's... but I disagree with the second, much like the Clue movie some modern board games could make some really compelling film if done right. the ones you listed (settlers of catan, ticket to ride, exc.) while amazingly fun games dont lend to a film narrative, but Android Netrunner, or the Arkham games (which yes are based off the books, but the movie does not have to be) Twilight Imperium, and probably a few others in which Narrative trump gameplay and I think could work :)

As with Clue, a movie based on a board game should be about the elements of the game. Fact is, most board games that are popular enough to have name recognition don't have those elements. Clue is the exception. That said, what if they had renamed The Wolf of Wall Street to Monopoly? I'll admit I haven't seen Wolf, but as far as adhering to the elements of the game, from what I do know of it, I'm sure few detail tweaks would have been necessary to transition it.

I think the can work if it's like the bord game can trap the people in a deth mach or something. And I don't mean by "oh it's yust 1 board game" there can be more like 5 that has different setting and different rules etc.

Avengers AoU actually looks really cool, (and that's coming from someone who didn't like the first film), and it's possible that it's because Marvel is taking itself seriously this time around.

HOW about some Halloween questions for you guys: - What is more scary: the more practical special effects of the olden days, or the modern CGI business? - Who pulls off the more realistic zombie if it were to occur in real life: George Romero, Rob Zombie, Danny Boyle and 28 days later, Walking Dead, World War Z, etc. - Best Stephen King Movie of all time? - What's a bigger terror : The Thing or The Body Snatchers? - Best vampire portrayal in a movie. (Since the new Dracula is coming out.) - Are classic monster movies able to get rebooted in the modern era? - What horror movie trend should die first: Slasher Flicks, Shaky Camera movies, or Paranormal ghost movies? Just a few suggestions.

Although Cap winter soldier was palpably darker than preceding marvel movies, I feel like Avengers age of Ultron will be a lot more grave and dark than anything we've seen before in a marvel movie. This could also be the first time we see a marvel film where the villain prevails and also one which holds more psychological edge than other marvel films. Just looking at Ultron from the trailer, he'll set a more creepy and terrifying spin on the marvel universe which will lead to destruction, not of buildings, but of the Avengers themselves.

Best Slasher: Alien. Iconic and terrifying design and concept. It obeys the most basic slasher rules. The twist is from the time the xenomorph bursts out IT is technically victim being hunted. It doesn't actively go after the crew until they give up and try to escape. There are so many memorable scenes, tense moments, and the camera work left enough to the imagination without distracting viewer. It revolutionized not just the slasher genre, but horror and sci-fi as well.

It's bullshit to say Age of Ultron needs to be like the first Avengers. Everything has been clearly set up from the beginning. Avengers one build was the team being created and gathering despite their differences and being triumphant: the origin. The build up for Ultron has been clear from the start. Iron Man 3 was Stark, who never took heroism seriously, getting PTSD from the job and ultimately deciding it wasn't for him. Winter Soldier was Captain America being disillusioned with the way modern government functions and SHIELD, which started it all, disbanding. Thor 2 forced Thor to join with his enemy to save the universe, only for his enemy to usurp the throne to his land. It's all been building for the team's fall. The third build up will be them recovering and reuniting.

Do the people at Screen Junkies know that movies exist outside of geek culture. I dig the energy and vibe you guys give off, but I wish it was more focused on a wider ranger of topics. Can you speak about westerns, musicals, and avant garde films? What about international cinema? What about movies from past era's of hollywood like the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70's? I think you'll eventually burnout your audience if all you do is speak about superhero movies and fantasy properties every week. Again, I like the show. I just wish the content was a bit more varied.

Thing is, A1, A2, and even the soon-to-be A3-4 make boatloads...Star Wars makes SHIPLOADS!!! Nothing to ever equal it simply because it's the greatest movie of all time (not because of box office numbers, and tbf not one of my favourite films either) but Star Wars will always win because every other film is quite frankly unnecessary when comparing to it on any level whether it be from a cinematic experience, social consciousness, culture change etc. it's just bigger than being a movie and that's why it'll outsell everything forever ultimately. (again, just saying, not one of my favourite films, but some things are just undeniable).

FIGHT 1: Who Will Dominate the 2015 Box Office - Star Wars or Avengers: Age of Ultron?: I love the Avengers, but Star Wars will bring the bank. It always does. FIGHT 2: Best Keanu Reeves Movie?: Point Break (definitive Keanu movie, like he said, no one else could play that role and have the movie come out great) FIGHT 3: Can We Take Johnny Depp Seriously Anymore?: No, too many kitch roles lately. Serious stuff he does fine, but he's taken too many "character-actor" roles lately where he's a goof. FIGHT 4: Terminator Genisys: Should Arnold Be In It?: Not as a terminator. There are other ways to use him. Introduce him as a character attached to the origin in some way of the Terminator robots - it would make sense that some models were patterned after him. FIGHT 5: Do We Want a New Pee-Wee Movie?: As long as it doesn't pretend to be a kids movie and is not marketed to kids. His stage show was awesome as adult-oriented comedy. FIGHT 7: Can A Movie Based On A Board Game Be Any Good?: Yes, but the game should have some great thematic elements to begin with. There are lots of great games, it's sad that all these guys know of is kids crap like candlyland and monopoloy. There are a wealth of intense board games out there that have some great story elements attached that can make for great movies. Silent Death, Battletech, Hero Quest, Heroscape, Warhammer 40k... FIGHT 8: Best Slasher Franchise: Nightmare on Elm St vs. Halloween vs. Friday the 13th vs. Scream vs. Child's Play vs. Saw: Nightmare on Elm Street. If you're going to have a character that ends up being "out there" just pick a franchise where the character is already there: A maniac who lives in the dream world.

Those are TWO bad dark superhero movies that nerds have used as a referendum on Dark comic movies with that as the rubric. There have been loads of Bad Superhero movies that had lighter tones, Green lantern,Batman and Robin, ect. It doesn't matter what tone a comic movie takes, thats a matter of preference, it does not determine weather a movie is going to be good that depends on other factors.

Tosh Hendrix Well, i myself don't hate Darkness entirely, but i feel the darkness needs to be executed well. Just as a disclaimer i did not see the man of steel movie so i can't judge but from what i understand, if dark themes are used poorly, ya stop caring about what happens in a movie, and that's a bad sign becasue the point of a movie, wether light or dark, is that ya are entertained and ya enjoy the deal. Too much light themes nullifies any conflict, and too much darkness casue apathy, and i think people felt aathy in those movies when dark themes went overboard but keep in mind, is just an opinion of mine, nothing absolute, feel free to disagree.

Captain America 2 had the perfect balance of humor and darkness. Its the balance. I love Marvel humor but I would like something thats a bit deeper from title to time.

Thank you! Dark or light-hearted, nothing to do with the quality of a movie. It's all about execution and being cohesive.

Honestly, Age of Ultron is gonna get more money. Star Wars is probably gonna beat the Billion Mark but Age of Ultron is most likely going around 1.5 seeing how much fucking people saw the trailer.

Keyser Soeze I know, Star Wars is amazing. If Star Wars gets Perfect reviews and Avengers 2 gets horrible reviews, MAYBE Star Wars will beat it.

TheArthurAwesome The thing with Star Wars Episode VII we haven't gotten a trailer or even somewhat hints of the actual plot. Or even roles of the new actors in the film. We got Hamill, Fisher, and Ford returning but there is no way to tell how much screen time they will have. Whoever wins at the box office anyway, will well make Disney win.

Man! Andy was so wrong about Star Wars Vs Avengers. Avengers 2 made less than the first one, and Star Wars is shattering every box office record imaginable.

I think Star Wars will win. Kids even today are being introduced to the movies as we speak. I was introduced to Star Wars for the first time 15 years ago and I never was the same.

Questions: - Do you feel splitting the last movie of a franchise into two pieces is good or bad? (eg: harry potter, divergent, hunger games, hobbit from 2 to 3 movies) - Favourite Horror movie in the last 4 years? - Do you think Avengers 3 will have Thanos erasing the Marvel universe as we know it, and rebooting the all the franchises with new actors?

Awesome guys, very awesome. Ideas for next fight: Who's the wrost director of today? Michael Bay vs M. Night Shyamalan vs some other terrible director. Can an anime series be made into a live action film and be.... Good? (Dragonball Evolved and The Last Airbender where just just sinful)
