We certainly didn’t come up with this one but it’s been brought up a number of times and we decided we were long overdue for giving it a shot. This muffling hack has been employed in a variety of ways with the intention of focusing the overall drum sound through contact exclusively with the drum shell. As a result, the drumhead feel doesn’t change at all.

The ringing of any metal snare has always made them sound like garbage cans unless you can somehow bury it in the mix. I used to "rag" my snare until I figured out the way to take out that ring. I do use a rosewood snare that I have never found anything better sounding. Thanks for the video! Experimenting and tuning is key, and you do not need to spend inordinate amounts of $$.

Some people like the ring my dude- a nice musical ring makes a snare sound great to my ears.

@@dalekay9ine I do not mean to impose my preferences on anyone, so please take no offense. That is why music and sound is so subjective and beautiful. Keep playing, if you do.

Garbage cans, is a pretty offensive way of putting it. You may want to argue that with Hal Blaine who recorded thousands upon thousands of songs with a Supraphonic. Thousands of recordings from just 1 drummer in history is a pretty strong endorsement of how good a "garbage can" can sound. Or how about Joe Morello? Until you hash it out with them, I'll keep on using my Supra; only been 50 years!

@@williamfotiou7577 No offense intended. I am referring to the old metal cans and some have a nice ring to them.

Tama have a signature snare, the lil john roberts snare, where they have a bead of silicon in there, pretty much does the exact same thing, this is a nice hack if you wanted to try for that sound

How about the batter side? I suppose I could/should just try it myself. I like my snare side ringy

subtle to no difference seems to slow down the 'frequency' of the vibration on some exxamples but that could be the velocity difference of the hit.

I tried putting acoustic foam on the inside of a snare before, not touching either of the heads. I was told that this reduces the volume of the drum without muffling it. In reality, it just muffles it. But that's still potentially useful.

Thinking out loud here.... I've sandbagged my 20" kick for years, it's just too light and without a tom or cymbal attached to it, it just wants to go everywhere. I know you did a video on this and it corroborated what I experienced tonewise when I did that. Now if you put sand in an inner tube and nestle that sand snake in the bearing edge... perhaps with creative use of 14ga copper wire you could fashion a couple of claws to hold it in place... I'm wondering about the effect of so much added mass!!!

That difference is so subtle that I don’t know if an audience could hear it in a full band setting nor would a listener be able to hear it on a mix. Good technique to know, but too subtle for any situation I find myself in. As always, thanks for sharing the knowledge!

Muffling a snare sounds like a box imo. Although I do find it works for some situations with a wallet, moon gel or percussion instruments on do have a useful purpose. no hate here, watch all your videos!

What did you think about this more subtle form of muffling?
@kushking420
@kushking420 Ай бұрын
@@SoundsLikeADrum I think it's a great idea, it's not over dramatic on cutting out all the ringing, and doesn't sound "boxy". I just tried it myself today, on my steel snare and love it, doesn't have an extremely loud ring like before and i like that it also doesn't show.
