We just passed a law in Australia to extend care to 21 as most teens arnt ready to go out into the world at 18
@allister.trudel
@allister.trudel 2 ай бұрын
that's great! it should be like that everywhere, 21 is a minimum imo, it's not right to throw 18 year olds to the curb, that's not how it happens in most families so it's not fair to withdraw so much from a teen just because they're legally an adult....
@KatTheo431
@KatTheo431 2 ай бұрын
The US does have that in many states but the problem is there are a lot of teens who don't want to stay in foster care and the rates of former foster youth signing themselves into extended foster care programs are very low. I left the group home I was at the day I turned 18 and there was absolutely nothing that anyone could have done to convince me to stay even though I was homeless and ended up couch surfing until I was taken in by a classmates' family. The big complaints are there can be a lot of rules and it can be restrictive staying in foster care and after having years of the system running your life, a lot of foster youth want the freedom to make their own decisions. But many foster parents don't want teens for the fear of problems and thus want even more rules/restrictions on any 18+ year olds in the home and that just sets up a lot of conflict. A lot of foster youth would prefer being provided their own apartment in extended foster care, not living with in a foster home. I ended up enlisting in the military and even though it did have restrictions, I felt I had more control over my life and it did provide more help/support than a typical job.

I'm in Connecticut. Foster kids in this state get help getting an apartment at 18, and the program helps until around age 24 or something. My only issue is some people live at home longer than that, so I think the voucher should go for longer.

In FL a child who ages out can opt back in anytime to extended foster care until age 21. They also get free state college until 28. There should be a point of contact at the agency to help connect to after care resources

if you have her 'rent a room' as her own household (even if you spot her the rent) she can qualify for SNAP assuming she has little or no income. (she has to keep her food separate officially) for help getting a job, she may be eligible for help from vocational rehab if she has any 'disability' including any mental health diagnosis. Most states don't have 'welfare' for adults without children, but a few do.

I saw the title and thought "homestudy time". lol. Knowing the things that these children are exposed to and the common outcomes we see with kids in the system becoming "adults", I am so extremely proud that she reached out to you. Considering she was out of state and called you, so many scenarios come to mind. Thank you for being such a supportive adult for these kids. It really shows how great you are that they keep in touch after they reunify or age out.

It says a lot about you guys that at least 2 (that I know of) former, aged out foster kids have either reached back out when they needed help or have continued to stay in your life and view you as they home away from home and second family, especially that the parents of the former let her come for regular visits and stays after reunification but before she was 18.

I work at a facility that offers transitional living programs. Once you hit 18, it doesn't mean you're ready to go on your own. Some of our kids can go in as young as 15. They're able to finish school while also having a part time job, learning how to pay their bills, budget, buy/cook food, all of the stuff you need to live on your own, while still having the safety net of knowing if you just can't, you're not going to end up not eating, being homeless, or having your lights/phone cut off. You're still going to be taken care of, but you're also learning how to take care of yourself in the process. I feel like kids, not even ones in the system, need something like that where they're able to learn how to be an adult without having to worry about being completely out of luck if things go south. It makes me beyond grateful I was adopted by a family who has been able to allow me some grace and help when there's been times I haven't been able to do it all, and who can still help me with stuff like car insurance when I'm 24

I have never been a foster parent, but, twice we have aged out former foster kids here. I knew them from church, their old-fashioned adoptive parent made them leave and he has died. It did not work out well with the young adults. They lost jobs and lied about the situation, and kept claiming to be "sick." I had to tell one "never again" and the other moved far away to live with birth relatives. I would think it would be simple - they need to work, pay a little room and board, and save money so they can live independently. But, they keep lapsing into helplessness.

@@joycejarrard6958it definitely sounds like you weren’t a good fit for them and it was the right thing for you to do for all of you to end the arrangement. Kids with that much trauma don’t always thrive with the structure you were providing with no room for error, and their needs were probably more than you were equipped to handle.

Between 18-21 young adults need to be transitioned to independence. A lot of parents in the US fail at this, because they are not able to transition to living with young adults. The rules of the home become the parents personal boundaries. I need to go to bed at midnight, and for my peace of mind, I need to know everyone is in and the doors are locked, so please be home by midnight. I don’t want to waste food, so please let me know if you are eating with me or with friends, so I don’t have to eat the same leftovers for a week. I will do your laundry for you today if you bring it to the laundry room, or you can do it yourself on Thursday after I finish my loads… With children we control their scheduled, with young adults they control their schedules within the boundaries of people they are responsible to - parents, employers, teachers, administrators, etc. The keys are respect and responsibility- if you don’t give them either, they are going to learn adulting the hard way.

I am assuming she is choosing to maintain her foster license despite the fact that she is currently taking a break. If she doesn't update the homestudy, she could have her license revoked. She would then have to start all over with the licensing process when she does begin taking placements again.
@littleredbender

Her license will still be active, and it has to have accurate information about any adults living in the home in order to be in compliance whether there are active placements there or not. I assume if she deactivated her license temporarily then they wouldn't need the info, but she would have to go back through all of the licensure stuff again to reactivate.

Wait, your license needs amended even if you won’t take any kid in while the adult lives with you? What if the adult refuses to comply with info requests or is a criminal or something? Yes, and then needs to be amended again when they leave. It isn't fun for the family, adult or worker. That also includes when a foster parent's child turns 18. If the adult does not agree then the license has to be closed.

You are this child's mother now. Or mother figure or second mom however you look at it it's still a mom figure. And it's very hard out in the world without parental figures I've been there a few times without support and it's so difficult. Now thankfully I have God so I'm not worried. But some people don't even have God or don't trust him so to have a person in this world and a connection that you can trust is incredibly helpful especially for a vulnerable child and yes they are still a child at 18 they're just not mature enough especially not in our society.
