I grew up a child of the 70's. If you told 8 year old me, that there would be a Star Wars TV show and it would hold zero interest for me, I would have called you a liar. Yet...here we are.

The good timeline was the one where George produced his 100 hours of Star Wars TV, after he refused to sell Star Wars in 2012. We may not be in the worst timeline, but in a timeline where Star Wars and almost every other franchise were butchered as such, it's hard to imagine one worse, at least in terms of fiction.

As another child of the 70's, I feel you. I watched the original Star Wars in the theatre with my dad the first time, and then whined every weekend after that to force my parents to take me to the theatre to watch it continuously. When it came out on HBO - forget it, my mom still has PTSD from me running around the house humming the theme song and using anything I could get my hands on as a light saber. I wasn't a huge fan of Episodes 1-3, they were too kiddie for me, but enjoyed 7-9 a bit. They were basically 4-6 amplified through special effects - the story wasn't as great, though. Some of the new series are okay. Clone Wars was great, and Rebels was pretty good. Loved Andor, Mando quickly became 'meh', and the one-off movies are totally hit-or-miss. Solo was unwatchable. Although I will watch Ahsoka, it's not a must-see thing for me anymore. And that makes me sad.

It is the greatest irony that in modern feminism, a powerful woman is defined as one who is just like a man and does man things better than he can. If only they knew how much power over men they have with femininity. My wife sure does. 🙂

As an old man I can tell you that Clint Eastwood often played a bad ass gun slinger BUT while doing these roles he rarely opened his mouth to even speak a sentence. When your truly bad ass personified you do not have to speak a word ---- everyone knows it by your mere physical presence. Either you can pull it off or not , most actors cannot pull it off , and zero women actresses can do it. But women can pull of being sultry and alluring just by their mere physical presence , men cannot . So it goes.There are two sexes , each with their own superpowers. Live with it snowflakes , and please younger generation , stop trying to turn women into men and men into women. It ruins everything.

ummm... why do you think a porkster can't be alluring? Look at Chris Hemsworth: every sane healthy hetero woman would want that that piece of abs in her drawer for everyday use. And trust me NONE of us would need it to speak! XD Now there's a long list and most are on Marvel's payroll. Even John Cena qualifies. Yes I know you're a man and you've been led to believe women focus on character, leadership skills etc to find a man attractive but that's just pure bullshit. Those are required by UGLY men ;) Oh also, for actresses pulling off menacing just by physical presence, I suppose you are not a horror fan, but any of those dozens of Nun movies and haunting movies featuring a female ghost / demon who doesn't speak are actually PROPPED by it not speaking, The conjuring being the most famous/successful one... It CAN be done. It just lacks writing and direction.

You nailed my biggest beef with the First Order! Like, how is it so well funded? The book series was CLEAR that all that was left was the Imperial Remnants, with warlords carving out their little pieces of the galaxy. It was so stupid of Disney to make the First Order as powerful as the Empire. They had literally thousands of years of stories already set in the expanded universe and they pretty much just took a dump on all of it.

The original Thrawn books did a great job exploring the breakup of the Empire. It got divided up among Grand Moffs and Grand Admirals kinda like the breakup of Alexander's empire. The new Republic is mopping up the warlords when Grand Admiral Thrawn returns from the far edges of the Empire having united several warlords under him thanks to an alien technology that allows him to brainwash you into happy, humble servitude. Han, Liea and Luke go out to face and defeat him before he can reunite the Empire while the Republic flounders under bureaucratic infighting amongst the various united planets. It's another Luke story they are taking away from Luke.

I don’t think I’ll ever convince people who grew up with the original that Luke and his friends have far less chemistry, are far less likeable, and live in a far less interesting time than Anakin and his friends. I grew up in the prequel era and I don’t want to see Luke doing everything because his character doesn’t interest me. There are others who’re like me; that’s why Clone Wars and Rebels exist instead of Luke-focused content. I don’t think it’s bad for them to make more shows continuing that story-line instead of stuffing in Luke.
@patrickr8400

@abubakrakram6208 they could have written characters for an entirely different Era then. They didn't have to erase the original stories and make them meaningless or give their stories to other characters. This, I think, is more proof that modern Star Wars writers and showrunners have little talent.

The scary part is there are Star Wars fans that are like starving animals, ready to devour anything thrown at them, no matter how bad it is. So Disney continues to shovel out rotten garbage and these “fans” are just gobbling it up. After consuming this hot garbage for so long, they are convinced that this is amazing because they can’t tell the difference any more. And this will all lead back to the recent trilogy, where this toxic spill first started.

It's when that whole lot of things coming out is crap and audiences have to make sure it's good before engaging on things that it becomes tedious. Checking stuff in case it's good has a risk/reward ratio. If that risk is too high for the reward to be mediocre at best, people don't engage on thw bet anymore.

And they were all shit, but I saw, unfortunatly, "The Book of Boba Fett"... urgs... And now I am asking myself why I am still a subscriber to Disney- (they don't deserve a +), yeah, I know why. It's because of that awesome back catalog when Disney made awesome movies and shows, that is the only reason why I am still there. But I don't know how much longer that will keep me there. Well, this, and Andor season 2, for the 1st season was awesome.

Yeah, women aren't scary like that. A woman being intimidating is when Cersei Lannister or Furiosa were speaking in a cool, calm manor, but it was about what they were saying, not if they could scream. Whenever women in movies do the amazon scream I laugh a little. They just sound like cheerleaders excited to see their old sorority friends.

Ahsoka = An inferior replacement for Shaak Ti. So much so that Ahsoka doesn't even keep her proper head bits. I don't think it's a small gripe to say that the montral and lekku of Ahsoka in the live action version is too small, because the first togruta we got was Shaak Ti. While Shaak wasn't doing lots of fancy plasma fencing in the prequel films, she nevertheless literally showed us what an adult woman of her species was supposed to look like. In the animation material where Ahsoka originated, and in Rebels where she was continued, we literally see her montral and lekku grow with age, with both TCW and Rebels depicting her with the full fledged version. ...so why is Rosario wearing a crappy costume piece that in no way looks like it's actually an organic part of her body? It just looks like a sci-fi durag. In usual fashion, Disney tells us this was chosen because of the impracticality of stunt choreography while wearing the proper Shaak Ti montral/lekku. Which is absolutely hilarious to even suggest in today's world. Because CGI. And what do we all know about Disney's relationship with VFX folks? They work them like sweat shops so bad that most VFX companies refuse to work with Disney. So it's obvious that these shows are really cut rate productions; they can't afford all the CGI they need, so they had to prioritize what was essential, then work around the other limitations. Obviously if Disney hadn't pissed off everyone working on CGI today, they could've had two headpieces; a green one for stunt scenes where the head bits are filled in during post production, and a physical one for tame scenes to seal the look. That's rather commonplace in much of filmmaking for at least 20 years now. At the end of the day, I'm not really fond of Ahsoka. I watched TCW for the first time earlier this year, I've yet to actually watch Rebels, but nevertheless, I felt that Anakin didn't need an apprentice, and that Ahsoka's part in the stories could've been handed to other Jedi so we could've seen their deeds during the Clone Wars. I'd much rather have had more screentime with Shaak than Ahsoka.

what I can not get over is how filoni missed the opportunity to give sabine some (MUCH needed) humility and depth by having the apprentice slice off her hand instead of running her through. A great example of what Chato is opining here can be found in Javier Bardem's chilling 'Coin Toss' scene in No Country for Old Men. There is an inherent implication of cold-blooded violence in his delivery, though he never utters a direct threat at all. I cannot think of a single female actress (not even Bette Davis!) that could have replicated that performance with the same level of menace. Women are bad ass when they are fighting for a cause (family or social) - from Ripley, to Princess Leia, to Elaine Benis - as per Chato's mamma bear reference. If by bad ass we mean "this is someone you don't want to mess with" - there are men and women of all stripes I'd put in that category, for different reasons.

An interesting assessment. I always thought Lucy Lawless pulled it off to a decent degree. Yes, Xena was campy nonsense but she played stoic warrior pretty well when called on. Xena could be monotone, haughty and closed off but was a multifaceted character, she switched between typical gender roles and mannerisms, she was also nearly 6 feet tall which helped (Though Lucy couldn't fight for shit). But that type of character was a rarity in the 90s. Of course there were lots of good female characters in sci-fi and fantasy then, many as leaders, but hers was different. Now, Hollywood seems to ONLY want to write/play that role. Very few can pull it off.

Regardless of their popularity (and I enjoyed both shows) Xena and Buffy were the start of the slippery slope to where we are now. The majority of SF and fantasy/supernatural shows since then have been female lead girl boss vehicles. Sanctuary, Wynona Earp, Can Helsing, Lost Girl, Charmed (both versions), Roswell (again, both versions), Timeless, Dark Matter, Killjoys. And that is before even looking at WB and the Arrowverse and the MCU series. I understand the rationale at the beginning. Cast a good looking girl/woman in the lead role and the guys will tune in due to hormones. The girls will tune in due to "representation". And maybe also hormones. Who am I to judge. But it became the norm. Can't have a fantasy action show being greenlit if it doesn't have a Mary Sue Girlboss as the lead. And so we end up today with a procession of increasingly bad She Hulk/Batwhamen/Rings of Power clones that hardly anyone wants to watch. If we could turn back time to the 80s and cancel Xena and Buffy after one season, I wonder what the state of TV would be today..... Ok, just as bad I guess. Hollywood will always find a way to f&£k things up.

@@tonygreenfield7820 As a fan of original Charmed and Buffy, I never saw them as "girl bosses". There were explanations as to why they were powerful in their own ways (in the case of Charmed it was botched by showrunner Brad Kern) and it wasn't just a case of , "They're girls so they're equal to guys". What they've been doing lately IS just that - claiming a 100lb woman could overpower a 200 lb guy and anyone who has been in a fight (or at least trained in martial arts) knows this is impossible and the women mouthing off (looking at you Phoebe Waller Bridge) would get slapped down in a heartbeat!

The difference is that in the days of Buffy and Xena, actresses still actually had a "craft" called acting. (Also, better writing). Not so much today. I'm reminded of Sister whatever her name in Obi-Wan who had screaming voice and whisper voice, and that was it. No nuance. The script could have been better, but the actress brought nothing to the table. The actress playing Hera I've seen before and she was baaaaad in what I've seen her in, and bad here. Or, as I say, she was either totally unrealistic bland and low energy sucking the life out of every scene or so over the top she makes Rodney Dangerfield look stoic. The fact they deconstructed Hera so she's no longer a sarcastic spitfire tells me they catered to the actress who can't pull of being a realistic person. I've also never been a fan of Rosario Dawson, who I thought got by on looks. Also, my gf commented: Sabine weighs like 120? Ass and nothing else. Yet, is this the tough Mandalorian we know. Really? She commented how Cara Dune was bad ass, cause you just glanced at her and knew she could hold her own in a fight. Same with Xena. I watched some of that when it was on. She was tough.

It's interesting that you are seeing actresses complain that many of their roles are now "2 dimensional" by requring their characters to be the all knowing, all powerful, all caring, all knowledgeable women bosses. Unfortunately, these complaints are ignored or ridiculed by female Hollywood leaders (boses) and some male directors who are emulating females. As the leadership is replaced (due to many things such as losing billions of dollars) you will see the roles begin to change back. It's inevitable since the Hollywood's messages don't resonate with normal people.

I don't think so. I believe it turns into planet fitness. People just leave the subscription on auto pay and Disney raises prices another 30% to make the business profitable. I read the earnings reports. The loss is narrowing because prices are rising quite fast. 30% in 4 months at one point (not list price, price retained by Disney as they have lots of deals out there). I hate to see it, but soon, it literally won't matter how a movie performs at the box office. Your monthly subscription is a box office ticket directly to Disney, every month, that they don't split with a movie theater. Way more valuable. And very hard to quantify how much money your movie generated for Disney / streaming compared to the box-office allowing Disney to underpay people a lot more using streaming. It's brilliant lol.
@Tential1
@Tential1 11 ай бұрын
Also, because Disney is essentially the platform, if they were now structuring deals with writers and actors. The 50% that used to go to the theater, Disney can argue that that's platform costs, and that only 50% of revenue should ever be discussed or something wild. Lol. Sadly, I just don't think content quality will matter as much, this is the new cable junk TV. Except Disney is just spending too much to produce it and charging too little. They'll fix that.

Asohka DEVELOPED into one of the better Star Wars characters. For the fans, storytelling is the biggest priority by far, but they do not care about the story. Also, they cannot handle any criticism and they believe what they have produced is fantastic. Therefore, the only possible reason in their minds why anyone could object is because of racism, etc. It makes them feel better, but it does not increase viewership! 5:38 This is the big problem I've had with the Sequel Trilogy, lore-wise it's completely illogical that the remnants of the Empire can recover so quickly and dramatically to be able to contest an opposing force (new republic). Chato you're right, that idea should have been the plot if the trilogy
@Bayard1503

Doesn't the sequel trilogy take place 20 years after Yavin? that's quick?? And it's not like the rebels had huge forces to completely wipe out the empire... Maybe they did in the books, but I'm not reading those, in the movies, series, we haven't seen the aftermath of the death of the emperor to make assumptions that "it's too fast"
@clockwerk35
@clockwerk35 11 ай бұрын
@@Bayard1503 the thing to keep mind of is that many star systems in the empire (and arguably separtist forces from the clone wars) did not like the Emperor, after the destruction of two death stars and the death of their leader and Darth Vader, many planets were rejuvenated in their effort to rebel against any imperial forces in their vicinity, kicking an already downed enemy. Sure, in the books, whatever command that was left for the empire took parts of the empirical territories for their own and govern their systems independantly, so they wouldn't either be able to put up much of a fight. Especially if they stand divided unlike the reblels/new republic.

@@clockwerk35 Alright but many of those systems would also oppose the New Republic, they wouldn't see much difference from the empire, so susceptible to manipulation by the New Order, they could promise anything, a decentralized empire for example. The WORST part about the sequel trilogy is that it COMPLETELY NEGATES Luke's entire involvement.! At the end of 'Jedi' Luke appeared to have KILLED the Emperor, Redeemed Vader, removed the threat of the Death Star destroying any planets, broken up the Empire, and brought peace to the Galaxy... Then we find out that all Luke did was kill an insignificant CLONE and delay the destruction of some planets for a few years, before the Empire/First Order just rebuilt and blew up the worlds with Starkiller Base anyway... So Luke had NO lasting impact, and we find it was actually REY who killed the REAL Emperor and reunited the galaxy. While Luke even refused to help train her, which was done by Leia. So if you removed Luke from the story nothing much would have actually changed... So Luke has become nothing more significant than a footnote in the 'Skywalker Saga'...

Yeah, in the original star wars and even most of the games in the early 2000s that accompanied the prequels. Force use was considered a rare thing. If you showed it off in public you wee met with gasps, and most normal folk in the universe didn't understand it. Those who had heard about it relegated it to myth and legend. The overuse of force powers is pretty terrible... Hollywood broke themselves on the superhero model, they don't know how to do something else anymore.

It seems like almost every character that Disney touches (Luke, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, etc...), the characters get ruined. Ahsoka was awesome before Disney, so were all the other characters that Disney messed up. Disney completely screwed Luke over. And then you see what they did with Rey, Finn, Rose, and so many other characters, who could have had so much potential, but Disney fudged them up. Padme and Leia were strong and powerful women (and Ahsoka--Before she was Disneyified. Disney seems to not know how to make a good character (for Star Wars, at least). I do have to say that I think that Mando (The Mandolorian) was a good character. Grogu was also a cute and entertaining character. Disney makes the characters relive and make the same mistakes over and over again, it seems like.
