I have 2014 Jeep Cherokee Latitude and I cant find the brake retract button anywhere in the options menu or I cant find it in the Uconnect options either, to replace the rear brakes. I cant get the piston pressed in enough to put the new pads in over the rotor. I also tried disconnecting the battery and I still cant get the piston too open enough to get the pads on? Any help thank you

I work as a part time mechanic( not a pro by any means) and It’s becoming more and more apparent that the people designing these newer cars never have to actually service them. That should be part of the design process. Make the engineers do all the common maintenance items to see what a PIA they make it. Great video though!

When you put the reset EMERGENCY BRAKE in service mode it does not retract the caliper piston but it does retract the springed tension on the electric emergency brake. Once this process is done and you have removed the caliper you'll still need to manually retract the caliper piston into their cavities. Also never remove more than one caliper at a time, meaning complete one wheel at a time. Don't remove the calipers for any other wheel while you're replacing the brake pads for one wheel. The reason for this is if there's more than one removed then when you attempt to retract the piston on one caliper the fluid being retracted from the caliper will cause the other piston to begin to move outward and if you go too far the piston can and likely will either dislodge from the caliper or it will get stuck in a cocked position and you'll lose fluid and potentially have to replace the caliper if you can't get the piston to return to it's cavity in the caliper.

Great video! I see a lot of Mercedes resemblance in the Jeeps from the Daimler/Chrysler days . I think these sit on the last ML Chassis. One of the few domestics that use lug bolts instead of studs for the reason. Also putting the brakes in service mode in the menu. Mercedes is the only one that does that while the others require a scantool or some archaic way to back them up.

great video! I have done the rear brakes on the Cherokee Limited model a few times now, and no matter where I buy the pads, they NEVER fit. Every single time I have had to grind the Pad wing tips down until they fit. Even a hammer can not make them fit (you certainly don't want them too tight). I have never had that issue with the front brakes or any other vehicle. I have had 2 different mechanics stop by to check it, and I have gone back to the retailer, no one can explain why they don't fit. And a quick Google search will show you I am not alone in this! It's the one vehicle that I cannot stand doing brakes on lol.

Great video, I especially liked that you called out most of the wrench sizes. That alone sped the job up considerably. By the way, the lug bolts are 19mm. One thing missing was the trick to get the pads into the caliper bracket. Maybe my pads were a little off, but I tried the OEM old ones and they didn't just drop in either. The spring clips seem to be the problem. First time I've run into this on a car. I didn't find a trick either.

Hi, great video. You have a failing caliper on the drivers side as I had the exact same thing happen to me! I left it so long the caliper seized against the rotor and had smoke billowing out. Another mention is those one time bolts these manufacturers use, sorry but I think that's a bunch of hooey for the most part, and only follow that rule on head gasket replacement etc. I re-use use those caliper support bolts and red loctite them when installing them.

One tip for removing those seized on wheels is to (from the outer side of the wheel) insert the curved end of an wrecking bar in between the rim and wheel hub, jerk up on the bar a few times and the wheel come off easily. Also for those stuck on rotors use a 3 -4lbs sledge hammer and hit them very hard (don't be gentle) and they will pop free. (Make sure the retaining screw is removed)

"just use loctite" thats a ghetto rig way to do thing. Always taking the shortcut or cheaper way, impatient way will cost you a lot one day. If a manufacture recommends you to only use the bolt once, theres more of a reason other than just loctite. Thats why they dont say to replace any other bolt in the caliper. Just that one, it literally costs $1 a piece. Stop ghetto rigging stuff and just do it the right way.

For those of you who don't have the brute strength to force the caliper to retract. There is a tool many people use that will last a lifetime and one is the brake caliper piston retraction tool. It has a flat steel plate like a brake pad has and a long threaded bolt with a handle and a washer type end that is used to push the caliper back into the caliper. The other tool comes with every set of brakes. Lol simply use and old brake pad and place it between the piston and the tool with the pad side facing the piston. Place the retraction tool plate inside of the front of the caliper and then turn the handle on the threaded bolt clockwise until you've retracted the piston. Then install the new pads then the caliper. Then the bolt vir the bracket. Install tire and tighten to spec

The torque on the rear caliper bracket mounting bolts is 89 ft-lbs. Its the front bracket requires takes 129 ft-lbs. On the anti-seize, the key is "a little" and applied evenly. Don't slather it on in thick gobs as it can cause wobble it it doesn't squeeze out. It's really only needed at the center hub anyway, as you have coated rotors.

If you have a pry bar about 48" that has the curved end you can slide the curved end between those spokes and then put the curved end on the back of the wheel. Then you simply give it a quick jerk causing the pry bar to pop the back of the rim right above the lug bolt holes. The wheel will come right off easy peasey

The reason for the torque is not that it makes it too hard to remove next time.. even though that may be the case. The torque is a measurement by engineers that tells the engineers what temperature the bolts will expand prior to breaking when heated. (basic explanation). Wheel lug bolts should be properly torqued too.. due to heat transfer from rotors to the lug bolts. When one breaks off inside the rotor it is a pain to remove.. when all break off it is a pain to control direction of your car...killing occupants and someone on the same road as you..!

Today I started change the pads and rotors on my TH, I now regret that I tried to do this my self, it took 6h for one side to change and I do not know if I got it right. I might have to take it to a dealer for a check. First I had some problem to remove my spacer when the parking brake didn't hold the rotor, took maybe an hour. Then I had som real issues to get the new pads in the caliper I mean real real problems! They didn't want to fit. I removed the caliper braket again and cleaned it very well but the pads was missing 1milimeter to fit, I hade to pry it in and I'm not sure if the car will make it brake. They are suppose to glide in the braket. And then I had som problem with the braket screws, had just a little wrench that could fit, it was realy hard to loose and tight it. Know I have another problem, I have to wait until morning to change the other side and I have to move the car with service mode that is on, don't know if a can do mode off and the in the morning set to on again... It's a knightmare...

Today I change the other side and it went better, more experience and less panic and anxiety. Took 4h, I think that is ok. Two learnings to next time is: 1) Get a long wrench to the Torx screws. 2) Have a metal file ready to shape the pads edges so they will slide better. I bought Wagners QS pads and rotors. One thing that Jeep has done bad is the Torx bolts, they are shallow and the torx socket doesn't get flushed in the bolt, very easy to slip when tighting it.

Now a year later I have to change the pads again, they are all worn down. I forced them in tight so they have not been gliding. I'm considering having the dealer to do it, $350 will it cost or will buy pads for $50 and do it my self. Now I know more what to do I can by some more tools to get it better like a file to cut down the pads' edges.

I ended up filing the edges of the pads a hair so they were not jammed in tight. The factory ones were super tight too and kept binding up.

Oh and forget replacing the bolts just use the original one's and tighten them reasonably only don't torque them down its not necessary. If you do replace the bolts replace with metric normal bolts not dumb-ass jeep bolts!!
