The EV revolution is upon us. But, is the green revolution truly green? Well, Governments and carmakers are fully invested in electric cars and they show no signs of slowing down. But it turns out that EVs produce a little more than zero emissions, and worse than that, the process of manufacturing Lithium-Ion batteries has proven to be highly conflict-ridden, largely in part to huge corporations mining with exploited workers and child labor in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

@@albonfilms The VW xl-1 Hybrid (small light 2 seated diesel/electric) gets over 200 mpgs on a fully charged battery. They used lots of carbon fiber to keep weight down making it expensive. But it's 100% proof that any car maker can make a small 2 seated hybrid commuter car that can get at least 125 mpgs. Plus covering it in solar cells would also extend range/mpgs....Yet car companies refuse to build them, they'll make a 50 mpg Toyota Prius but not a 125 mpg 2 seated car that's 100% buildable....Sooooooo, if climate change is the huge emergency the Globalists Leaders say it is, why aren't they building these 125mpg hybrids to drastically reduce emissions? If a 125mpg hybrid costs say $25,000 it'd eventually pay for itself VS a 35 mpg car. Our Globalist leaders are either major hypocrites or "climate change deniers" Their carbon footprints are a million times higher than the average persons. Since making this video, Tesla has announced that they will be rolling out their LiFePO (cobalt-free) batteries to all Standard Range Model 3s globally. This is a big step forward and good on Tesla for doing it! But we need every model of every EV to be made without conflict-ridden materials, and that includes Lithium mined in Congo. Links to charities are in the description! Does this video change your outlook on EVs? And beyond EVs, what about the battery in your phone or computer? Do you think your buying habits will change knowing where the materials come from? I'm curious, drop a comment!
@nikisepps
@nikisepps 2 жыл бұрын
I mean controversial take here, but so much from cobalt mining and other raw resources come from Africa and other areas with exploited workers and human (effectively) slave labor. If you don't buy from them they loose what little stability they have in their life, and all of our products will get exponentially far more expensive. So...umm...is our modern society always built on slaves but we just push them further away from our sphere of influence so we don't feel quite as bad? I mean morally I'm in agreement, it's a horrible practice. But I'm skeptical if it can be avoided.
@albonfilms
@albonfilms 2 жыл бұрын
@@nikisepps I think you're forgetting the one main component between us and the exploited people of the DRC: Trillion-Dollar Corporations. We don't need to put people in Congo out of jobs, we just need companies like Apple, VW, and Tesla to actually make a real effort to pay these people livable wages and not take advantage of them. These companies actively make the choice to have it this way. Africa isn't poor and exploited because that's how Africa naturally is, it's because people value profit over their lives.

The problem is not what powers the car, but the car itself. Trains, in all it's forms, are the ultimate solution to solving the whole environmental problem. Trains require less space and maintenance. They fit more people. Can be powered fully electric, are faster, etc. Better city design and planning (less regulations and zoning) and governments and cities slowly phasing out car use in cities, will solve the problem. Simply replacing gas cars with electric ones will not solve the issue. It just shifts the problem area. And it completely ignores the true causes for the problems we are facing today

Exactly, for example when computer s were created people assume that written in a paper would vanish saving millions of trees being used as paper but it did all the opposite since people will now mass print stuff for everything. There is a good reason why Toyota never rushes and put more eggs in one basket on EV for these exact reasons pointed out in this video and would rather take the multi approach of alternative fuels like Hydrogen, Hybrids, Biofuels, and E-fuels to further make improvements on proven technologies of ICE and Hybrids which is rather clever of them, to say the least. Especially when Akio Toyoda though no longer as a CEO but a Chairman of Toyota knows very well how the automotive industry works for many years of experience before people start talking crap about them thinking what a stubborn man he is when really it's quite the opposite and is already ahead of time.

Stopping to buys electronics with batteries is not the solution. those exploitation will only continue to another source to exploit. lets say the cobalt demand is now zero, child labor will only be redirected to be exploited on another things, maybe tantalum for chipset, maybe precious mineral stones, or any other, you name it. What we need is a system that support the industry from source to end product in a way that they will ensure to keep safe the human rights, globally.

The 20% number is actually not entirely correct. It's about 20% if the cars are the same size/weight, but EVs are much larger and heavier on average, meaning the amount of CO2 that is released during the production of a EV is higher than the 11.000kg number for the average EV. Basically, if you compare a small gas hatchback with an EV SUV which are the big sellers, then over the liftetime of those cars 10-15 years (without a battery swap), they will be about even. It ends up about the same, especially if you consider that there is engine tech on the horizon that will reduce emissions by 30% in the next couple of years. EVs being good for the environment is not really true in most cases. It ends up being pretty close, just with more rare earth metals and child labour. At least the manufacturers get a bigger cut from selling EVs so they are happy.

Hey man, I love your content and you pointing out these issues is amazing work! I miss one point in your conclusion: The electric vehicle itself is not the problem. We as consumers and people who can vote in democratic states need to show, that we want to have the issues fixed surrounding battery production. Nethertheless, we all want and will need battery powered devices and vehicles in our daily life, and being informed about the glaring problems shouldn't lead us to damning electric mobility in general. We "just" need to stop exploiting humans for it. To add to that: Conventional powered cars use batteries and loads of smart devices using materials sourced in the same inhuman way as Cobalt, and VW especially even produces parts not only for their EVs with forced labor, Uigur workers in China

Akira Yoshino did not make the discovery at all. M. Stanley Whittingham developed the first lithium battery in 1970 which was then improved to a lithium ion battery by John B Goodenough in 1980. Goodenough's work was commercialized through Sony by Akira Yoshino, who had contributed additional improvements to the battery construction.[14] Goodenough received the Japan Prize in 2001 for his discoveries of the materials critical to the development of lightweight high energy density rechargeable lithium batteries

I love how even though this is a professionally done video, the title and thumbnail make it have 10k view's but a video on a JDM car price rising gets 100 000's of views. Shows how people can't stand reality.

Cobalt is just one thing, you also have the rare earths that present a different kind of danger. They poison the land when mined, and in China that have been a major supplier of rare earth materials cheaply, you now have problems growing food because the land is poisoned from these mining operations. Rare earth consumption isn't just limited to EV's though, there is a lot of other electronic devices that needs it and the supply is currently scarce, which makes it ripe for exploitation.

The good news is that companies are moving away from cobalt when they can. New battery tech is coming with iron and poly based cells, heck even carbon. Green is just a buzz word, all things that move consume energy in one way or another. I love gas and EV tech, but for different reasons and applications. Energy is never free, no matter how you spin it.

It's pretty obvious that in 2030 instead of saying we are going to run out of oil they will be saying we are running out of lithium and so we need to jump onto the next auto industry fad.

Want to know something sad. Like epic sad. I was thinking about this video today and it occurred to me; seems people were more upset over SSC bogus record than what's going on in battery production.

I am still, to this day, more optimistic with hydrogen engines. Toyata's been making some serious ground with their engine.

This is not the problem of the manufacturer it is the problem of the people doing it. The lack of education in these areas where they are mining is the real problem. These people have no clue they are working for nothing. If they knew what their life was compared to others they would not do it.

Catalytic converters are awful for the environment as well. The figures for the production emissions of ICE catalytic converters are included in the 9000KG figure. The materials used (Platinum, Palladium, and Rhodium) are at a smaller scale. Largely mined in South Africa and Russia. There aren't nearly as many records of large scale human rights violations with these metals, but I'm sure it's occured.

I'm holding off on anything EV until the production emissions are far better than contemporary gasoline and hybrid vehicles. And I'm waiting until the EV drivetrain tech trickles down to low-technology cars in the $20,000 range.

The thing is, the Congolese are always gonna be poor unless you give them a chance to become rich. If they don't work in a cobalt mine or another dangerous job, what other options do they have? All rich countries went through the same process of poverty -> bad working conditions and child labor -> factories -> schooling -> better working conditions -> more pay -> rising levels of wealth and expansion of the middle class -> higher education. If you take away these opportunities they will remain poor. Couple that with Westerners trying to reduce reliable fossil fuel usage in poor countries, and they have no hope of achieving the same levels of wealth and quality of life that we have. It seems Westerners don't care enough to think about it any deeper than the surface level though.
