Throughout my career I've had a lot of successes. But what most people don't realize, and what most of us in general try not to dwell on - is that we have a lot of failures too. A lot of mistakes, a lot of life lessons that were learned through making the wrong decisions, falling flat on our face, burning bridges and having doors slammed shut in our face.
What a lot of us don't care to realize, is failure is part of the process. We need to fail, we need to make mistakes, all of this is data we use and apply to better our successes down the line. And, those really painful mistakes, the ones we will never forget - are the ones that ensure that we don't make the same mistakes again, and again and again.
Embrace your failures, learn from them and better yourself. Use them to make better decisions down the line and avoid repeating them in the future. It's natural to shy away from the events that we didn't have wins, but these are just as critical to lean into as they're the pains that will guide our successes in the future.
I hope you find this talk valuable. It's one I was excited to do, as well as insecure about ever posting.

I feel like a crazy person for ever thinking that a degree would open doors in this industry. Man, I've spent so much money moving around to London, NYC, and now LA just studying and networking. I just spent 7 months freelancing and working on my skills, which has helped. I'm always looking for that junior role where I can grow and add to my skill set. It's just like, man, no one ever tells you how many years and money it costs to get to that first break. It definitely has that starving artist aspect to it.

Allan, Been a huge fan of your stuff since you first threw out your FumeFX tutorial WAY back. I sorta grew up with your tutorials and your talks and ran into you a few times at a few conventions and gatherings but at that time I wasn't in VFX. The reason why I'm reaching out; I saw your talk about what you learned in 20 years. And you spoke about the back talk and how it affected your future. I'm glad to see someone who went through something similar is still trying. I got scared and went into a dark place when I thought there was nothing left for me. I'm hanging in there, and a lot of it was thanks to watching you grow as well. I hope we can work together one day. I'm still very new to all of this but I'll catch up soon and would be a huge honor to learn under you one day.

Thanks for doing what you do! I was in your Live Action class. I was doing ok at first. I was working in a software that wasn't Max, and I hit a limit where I couldn't move forward. Then I switched to Max and TP, and soon hit a limit where my hardware was too weak to progress. It depressed me. Didn't touch a 3d for a while. Almost a year. Then something hit me, and I decided to give it another shot. I've been working in a restaurant, bartending/serving 6nights a week. Doubles, 16hr shifts. You name it, I did it! I now have enough dough to buy a capable workstation, and building myself with advise from your hardware guide, and suggestions from Troy. Basically I was gonna quit. I think I had good reason too. I'm positive anyone else would have given up at this point, but not me. This is my dream, and FX is my passion. Working in the service industry showed me that if I can work two full time jobs at the same time, then I can do anything. It also painfully taught me that I want to enjoy my life, doing a job that I enjoy! I recently left the restaurant job, and I plan to put those 35+ hrs a week into my work. Your videos, and positive messages have been a great source of inspirational fuel for me. I'm going to show you this year what I can do, and I can't wait! Thanks for doing what you do!

I spent my fucking life wasting time in studies which didn't teach me anything and have nothing to do with what I want to do just to be able to exist in a good country because where I come from (Algeria) I have no value. and thanks to people like you, I keep fighting and pushing forward even I don't find a work in this field and I don't even have the authorization to work where I am now in France. There is 4 people I admire and give me example, Andrew Kramer God of After effects , Jean yves arboit God of 3ds max , Allan Mckay God of VFX, Denis keman and Arimus god of 3d modeling! Love and love and respect to you my heroes , I hope I will be like you some da, be capable of doing creative work and be successful and teach other people 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

Thanks for this. I spent my life trying to do VFX and I'm close to 60 now, and whilst I like to think I've done some great work both commercially and personally, I think ultimately I failed. I started when it was so hard to get into the game (I blagged a job on "Empire Strikes Back"), but could never get the leg-up to continue in motion pictures. Then all the new kids came up behind me with their CG chops, and I struggled. Since then most of what I do is motion graphics, and it's paid the bills, but I never got to do the real stuff I wanted, particles, destruction, pyro etc. You are the "master of disaster" I always wanted to be, so kudos to you sir. I would love to Skype some time if you have a moment.

Hey, Allan, i rly love the idea about doing it now rather than waiting to be perfect, but how can we know when we're good enough to start sending these reels to various companies for a job ? I personally focus on Look-Dev, Modelling and probs my soft skills are the rest things such as animation, vfx sim's, compositing etc. Also i am part of many CG groups in the facebook and i see alot of ppl that does pretty poor work, does it mean that im above average and ready to apply? But even tho my own portfolio doesn't look that good, maybe because i do more testing rather than production quality work. Also my biggest fear is that even i get accepted in some studio and lets say my reel is fkn awesome, but then when i get actual job i will totally suck ( because i dont know how good my team will be etc, maybe they're lightyears ahead ).
@activemotionpictures
@activemotionpictures 5 жыл бұрын
Allan mentions that this is why you need to be good at a specific pigeonhole. What you like to do the most, this is the reason why the studio should call you, identify you, specifically call you. Yeah, don't compare yourself with others. Compare yourself to you. Give it all you got, be humble to learn from others when you are working in the studio and help others. This is how Allan expresses your attitude in the job is more important. You'll have to level up everyday, but having the correct attitude positions you as a preffered person to work with. Peace.
