Having unrealistic expectations of yourself -- that everything is going to be flawless and you’re just going to win -- is the easiest way to derail yourself and see yourself as being a failure. It’s these micro wins that we should be celebrating. But how many of us give up on something because we didn’t get traction right off the bat? With that mindset, we’re more likely to set ourselves up to fail.
It’s all about perseverance. The people that have success are the ones that didn’t give up. They kept at it and looked at failure as part of the process. The more we see wins and losses as just data, the more we can analyze them to get better results. We need to cut our losses and double down on what works. Experience is just learning from our mistakes. This is why experience is everything.
If you want to be good -- you’ve got to be prepared to fail, and understand that it's just part of the process. Use that data to improve with each revision and version up until you reach the goals you're seeking!
Whether you're working on your business as an artist or designer or working in Maya, 3DS Max, Houdini, After Effects or any other tool. Having a strong understanding that process is everything and getting results doesn't come first try. The better we can improve our creative skills in visual effects and other vfx or 3d design industries and our visual fx career.
If you have any questions, or want to share your own experiences and thoughts, leave a comment I would love to hear from you!

I've been struggling for a year to get a job in a movie studio. I have failed many times but that failing experience taught me everything. I didn't give up and i'm still working on my skill & brushing it up. At the end you are not learning you are making progress. Consistency helps you to make progress. And ya all that negative thinking and overthinking did happen a lot. Just remember your mind is always eavesdropping so try thinking positive always. One day I will hit a bullseye. Thank you Allan for making this video, you really read my mind. Cheers!

Absolutely right. I translate the point you make around AI as an implicit form of emotional 'detachment' from the process. The process is necessary. There is no way around, but only through. Feelings and emotions around it is just resistance, resistance that will ultimately impede. Been watching your videos now daily, at peak times. You sir are a legend. Thank you.

Good Video - Glad that someone stands up and tells it like it is - always told my students the same thing - did they listen - no... - but over time they have finally realized oh this stuff takes a lot of time and you have to continuously evolve.

Definitely! Everyone wants fast results or they never get started because they overthink things and are afraid to fail. So I think the more we embrace failure as being part of the process, the quicker we get positive results

Bro, this is one of (Greatest) Vids, on this topic. I love you the way clearly explain this issue in the most simplest of ways. Being a (Veteran) Artist/Animator myself, I didn't get this or understand this earlier in my career. At that time, and (Back in the Day), I thought that I was (SO) good, and I wasn't! It wasn't until I got hit (Hard) with this harsh term of reality, that I realized, that I wasn't very good. And also with that, I had a long string of (Failures) that quickly brought me back down to (Earth). But then, right at that point, with a lot of hard work, and a change of my (Mindset), and years and years and years of (Practice), I actually started getting good or better. Through those humbling experiences, I'm actually a decent Artist now. But going through those (Failures) were (Tough), but it made me the artist that I am today, and I'm so grateful for that. This is what these younger artists need to learn, and I don't know why most of them (Don't) get this? (Play the Long Game, NOT the Short Game). Failure is where the growth is. Now, I do know to accept this is a hard pill to swallow for most people, but it's well worth it at the end of the day. Anyway, thanks, Allan, and keep on Killing it, Bro. your Vids are (GREAT)!

Sir I’m a big fan of you! a strict follower of your channel! Very informative! I’ve soaked up all information! Quick question for you I’ve applied for some VFX schools and may start soon once I get approved. My Q is i am an animator myself love that passion, really enjoy animating so on but my goal is to be a generalist I enjoy modeling, a little bit rigging so to say I really want to teach myself and get into a boot camp before going to a VFX school and without expecting something to happen to me. But most of the times I get bogged down with details of each medium. For example as for vfx studios in Canada what would you recommend me to do to train myself like what are the fields I should master, things in most demand ? And Is there any test and or something to pick faster and say yes I have also talent in lighting or rigging I can understand how things work for example ? instated of getting lost? And is it a health way to follow that kind of path of becoming generalist junior at ILM level studios ? Thank you so much o hope it makes sense You are like Mr. Yoda for us with all these knowledge! 🙏

This is such a crazy industry. I never thought that I would be dealing with this much failure for the last two years. As a 3D artist, I've done so much free work for start-ups, low-paying gigs on freelancing sites, and getting rejected for runner positions at VFX companies(I got rejected from Framestore because I don't have a car. I sold my car to go to grad school to study 3D). I've found it incredibly hard to convince myself to get back on the horse every time I fail. I wasn't always like that but I have been like that recently. Especially being in LA where it seems impossible to find a junior 3D role anywhere, it can be daunting and discouraging. A lot of entry level roles go to students or recent graduates. There's not really much that can be done apart from continuing to freelance, work on my portfolio, and meet people (siggraph, creators society, Women in Animation, CTN, Lightbox). I do love listening to Allan though, it always gives me a renewed sense of hope to not give up.

it is not the failure anymore but the competition. market is saturated with artists and you have to accept lower prices to work after all those years of experience...
@AllanMcKay
@AllanMcKay 3 жыл бұрын
If you have a lot of experience and you're being replaced by people with no experience or having to negotiate less money then you need to focus on how you communicate your value. It's easy to say market is oversaturated but it's really that you aren't communicating how you bring value to the table with your experience and with your skills. So it's not what's on paper, more experience didn't equal more money. But being able to communicate your value and why you're worth more is.

I admire your work ethic! Do you even sleep? Like seriously.. I cut down to 6 hours and I still cant seem to find the time I need
@AllanMcKay
@AllanMcKay 4 жыл бұрын
thanks Beste! haha yeah I get about 5 hours on average. I think sleep is extremely valuable so I don't think anyone bragging about sleeping less is ever beneficial, but I get up at 5 each day so usually I head to sleep around 11 or 12. I find getting up early really valuable for me, to get more done before the day starts. But everyone has their own routines. If you're cutting your sleep to 6 hours, I wouldn't try to shave anymore time off, rather look at getting more out of the time you're awake. Batch tasks, focus on quality time, less distractions, cut out multi tasking and just give yourself set time blocks for every task that you can give quality time to the things that matter. I'm actually going to be posting in the next week or so how I organize my day to day, week to week and my year - since we're coming up on the start of a new year. So hopefully that might give some ideas on how to organize your days etc. Thanks for reaching out Beste!
