This is a video you definitely should watch if you own a Redarc BCDC Charger. (this included the Redarc BCDC1225D, BCDC1240D and BCDC1250D) I correct an error from my last video explain how the boost charge limit works and what implication it could have on your charging time and test a new Redarc Lithium charging profile that would solve the boost charge limit issue. If you are an owner of an older 12xxD BCDC Charger and wonder if the boost charge limit would affect your charging Lithium watch to the end as there is a twist in the story.

Stefan, thank you so much for your thoughtful investigation. Today, I have contacted Redarc and they have advised that the update has only been available in the past few weeks so if I want the new profile, it will be prudent to buy from Redarc. Still not clear on whether my fridge will still be operating during that 20-minute cold down period. Thank you again Stefan.

Thankyou Stefan, this is the product development feedback that companies like Redarc need! The company I work for had multiple service vehicles with the older 1225 and 1240 models that we struggled with a lot, in remote areas, because that 2hr bulk mode was never sufficient to cover our 12volt loads and fully charge up our AGM batteries. So much so, that after losing batteries and struggling, we added extra fixed Solar panels, some with separate solar regulators and disconnected the BCDC from controlling the solar input and left it manage the smart alternator. Things have improved a lot with the newer BCDC50, however, I think some user selectable settings should be available via Bluetooth, people are more Tech savvy and paying big money for their batteries... they should have more ability to control the charging settings, or download/select the battery manufacturer's recommended charging profile to suit? What about the Built-in BMS in some Lithium batteries connecting to the BCDC and handshaking state of charge information, so that the Li-Po battery decides when and how it's charged?

to be honest, if you use it for Lithium I don't think you will have any issue, we actually did not manage to get the Redarc out of bulk mode. Someone I know tried the same with AGM and it did also charge continuously till full well past the supposed 2h bulk charge limit. Bit puzzling so I assume Redarc change the algorithm along the way.

@thetravellingsultana7495
@thetravellingsultana7495 2 жыл бұрын
Manger 30 is a different kettle of fish. The manger 30 has all the smarts and doesn't just rely on voltage. Because it has the ability to calculate the current consumed and the the addition of the battery temperature sensor as well as voltage sensing it can keep charging till the batteries are full. If you have the room and are going to mount the charger internally, I think the manager 30 is the way to. Although alot more costly at first glance. If you buy a comparable dcdc charger, mmpt solar controller, 240v charger and stand alone monitor it works out to be around the same price but a smarter system.

Thank you for this video , I have a 1250 at the moment charging an itech 120x lithium battery and I can’t get it to stay in boost mode for very long either. I’m currently using a VictronConnect shunt to monitor the amps coming in and out and I’ve got a 200w solar panel permanently connected to the roof of my car. Do you think disconnecting the solar panel would reset the boost charge process ?
@AlloffroadAu

Interesting, while Redarc said the boost charge limit exist neither myself or JS Auto Electrics nor another Auto Electrics guy on Facebook who tested it extensively could get it to get out of boost mode. If it's the boost mode time limit disconnecting solar would not reset it you would need to disconnect all charge and all load.

Hi Stefan You commented on this video and your everdrive vs redarc video about the derating of the enerdrive happening earlier at 50oC than the redarc at 55oC. You showed that even on a 25oC air temp on a bench, the redarc got over the 55oC and was derating. Do you know if the enerdrive with its internal fans keeps a lower internal temperature compared to the external temperature due to the fans blowing cool air inside, and thus doesn't derate as quickly or at as low air temp as the redarc?

Hi Stefan, Thanks for sharing your research - it's been really useful as I plan my upgrade to a lithium aux battery in the back of my LC76. I've pinned down the dcs 150ah for the new battery as it will fit perfectly with my setup. I also need a new charger and I like the victron 30ah except for the comparatively low output of the most powerful unit. I have considered 2 X victrons but that will take up more space and doesn't really seem cost effective (solar regulator will be another cost with victron). Noting the charge algorithm characteristics of the redarc units, how have you found the performance of your redarc charger (50ah??) paired up with your dcs 150ah battery
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu Жыл бұрын
its good mate never had an issue though keep in mind it will not put out 50A for long unless you are in deep winter and its quite cold, I found that at around 23c outside temp the unit will deliver 50A for around 15-20 minus and then go the 40A seems to be what most of them do though.

I fitted a 80mm fan to the 1250D and in 21 to 23°C ambient, it ran @ 50A continuously for 5hrs 15mins, putting 260AH charge back in to my dead flat 2x 120AH Kings LFP batteries. @ this point, the batt voltage was 14.1V according to Vitron, and the 1250D continued to charge for another 10mins, with the current falling away to about 10A before the battery finally cut off at 14.36v. After 2mins, the 1250D dropped its voltage to 13.7v. All of this is a comletely normal, and correct charge cycle. Before the fan was fitted, the 1250D would run @ 50A for about 10mins, b4 dropping to 43A. I used a 21cfm 12v 18dBa fan. This is the quietest 80mm fan on the market, but also the lowest airflow, and the 1250D still produced 50A @ 22°C for 5hrs. Any regular cheap 80mm fan will produce 30cfm and 28dBa - you should not hear 28dBa when the car is driving. 30cfm is 50% more than the fan I used, thus any 80mm fan should be ok. I used some 12.7mm Adhesive PCB Standoffs from Jaycar, plus a 80mm fan guard, amd sone zip ties. Mount the fan to the ribbed face, 1/3 from the led end - this end is hotter. I tested the fan with the 1250D both horizontal laying on a solid surface and vertical - makes no difference - both are still 50A after an hr 1250D fixed.

never looked at that or noticed it until we did the bench test, seems like charger reaches 55°c internally quite quickly (didn't time it but say around 20 mins laying on a metal bench with 20°c ambient) and then de-rates and stays around the 40a mark continuously.

I have been testing in the house @ 18°C ambient. After 10mins of charging the current suddenly drops from 50A to 43A and then stays on 43A. I then gave it a gentle breeze from a pedistal fan on the lowest speed 1m away, and after another 10mins, the charge rate was restored to 50A. This unit was designed to ge mounted in airflow. In a cabin it will get hot and thoittle back to 43A. I will fit a fan to mine and re test.

What I understand is that (a) under certain conditions it won't cover the loads being taken from the battery even if you are driving, and (b) is this the same unit which Andrew White found could discharge the auxiliary battery completely?
