These are my first impressions and thoughts of the Altra Superior 5. I will review them after a few more runs and publish comparison videos with other Altra models, such as the Lone Peak and Timp.
I bought these running shoes with my own money.
Trailblaze your trail days with the new Superior 5. It’s light, it’s fast, and it’s trail-running-ready with a MaxTrac™ outsole and a multi-directional lug pattern for traction on any terrain. The updated removable StoneGuard™ uses less material and is lighter weight and the “burrito” style wrap-around tongue provides a locked-in feel. Lace-up and take off with the Superior 5.

Excellent review! Hilarious bit on the Vanilla Orange GU. You mentioned your feet slide forward on the downhill. I'm finding that with the Rivera, other than that they're great. But I think I need a pair of Torin 5. I, too, had plantar fasciitis, and the Altras really have helped.

Great review, I really like the idea of this shoe being minimalist. I feel like using a shoe that strengthens your foot is a big benefit. I think over long term a strengthened foot can go a long way!

Completely agree! I'm sure true barefoot runners will scoff at the though of the Superior being considered a minimalist shoe, but I think for most recreational runners, this is as minimal we're willing to go. I feel my feet have gotten strongen from the Escalante, I can only imaging the Superior also doing this!

Any trail running will strengthen your feet and ankles, especially if it’s more technical, but wearing Altras will help strengthen your big toe more than any traditional brand would!

😆LOL @ 3:59. What I call youtube running, or running for camera, a wholly new mode of movement in human evolution and sports history. Additional points for self satire with slow motion, high production values. Liked & subscribed. Thanks for the input on VC and VCT's by the way.

“I don’t need a new pair of trail running shoes.” I strongly disagree with this statement… 🤣🤣 That cinematic slo mo! 😆 Took me a few runs to get the right tightness for the downhill as well. Did you say 13km? How did you feel they held up on that distance? I usually stay at 15k or under with the superior. Excellent video!

Thanks Jeff! I eventually finished with 14k, and my feet felt great afterwards. I love how lightweight they are, whereas the Timp and Lone Peaks are very clunky in direct comparison.

I went half size up on my superiors, and it’s perfect, but i guess you should just get into a store and try them on
@TDMiller
@TDMiller 3 жыл бұрын
I've heard many do that 😅 I'd have to drive 3h (one way) to get to my closest Altra dealer and hope they have my size. I always run in extra large shoes, but I find Altra trail shoes are just getting waaay too big. So that's why I sized down from what I usually use. Feels perfect now. I just hope my toenails survive it too 🤣

How is the width in the middle of the shoe compared too the LP?
@TDMiller
@TDMiller Жыл бұрын
A little more snug, but not extreme. The upper wraps nicely around the foot, so even for wider or more narrow feet, it is comfortable.

Isn’t heal striking bad with zero drop shoes?
@TDMiller
@TDMiller 2 жыл бұрын
Good question, Chris! Yes and no. Heel striking is definitely not the most efficient when it comes to running, but that's with all running shoes. I need to put in extra effort to not heel strike, but often fatigue kicks in. I'm a strong believer in allowing the runner run the way they naturally run, and I've not gotten injured since switching to Altra. I actually spoke to an Altra rep who debunked the myth that zero drop is bad for heel strikers. The shoes allow you to run naturally, and if that's heel first, that's OK (not efficient, but not "bad" either.)

I don't know if it's because of the sound on the ground, but the sole of the Altra Superior feels very thin. I like the feeling of the ground in trail running, but I think we are in a low limit for a medium distance. I'm still curious to try. What about the rebound or responsiveness of the shoe?
@TDMiller
@TDMiller 3 жыл бұрын
That's a very good question, and it's one I'd like to give myself some time to test out. Due to the thin (21mm!) sole, it will have less rebound and will depend more on your own feet and ankle strength. Also, running on soft trails, the energy return will differ, compared to running on hard surfaces. So bear with me, and I'll make sure to answer it in the near future! :-)

How is the toe box comparing to Escalante? I find the Escalante just a bit tight. Usually run in more minimal shoes but want something with more support for ultra trail races
@TDMiller
@TDMiller 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Arthur, the toe box is very similar to the Escalante and I think they are even based on the same shoe "last". If the Escalante are too tight, it will not be any better with the Superior. The Lone Peak are slightly wider, has a higher toe box, and provides more support. Altras are also designed to be used without the insole, this could provide you with more space. I've never done this before, but I've heard from many this being a great trick to get more space. Hope this helps? Let me know if you need any further help. :-)
@arrrgr
@arrrgr 3 жыл бұрын
@@TDMiller Thanks TD! Good to hear about the Lone Peak being slightly wider. I tried using the Escalante without the insole but didn't like how much space I had above my foot if you know what I mean. I may look for just a smaller insole to use

@@TDMiller I am one of those who think superior is too tight with the inner sole, so I run without it. For my use, the superior4.5 is still too much of cushion but I will give the lone peak a try and see if it fits my toes better. My toes touch the upper constantly.
@paddywiggle
@paddywiggle 3 жыл бұрын
@@timurhant469 the lone peak has a lot more space above the toes, and a similar toe bumper, but I’d go a half size down from whatever you got in the superiors! Also yea the Lone Peak will be a cloud compared to the Superior. Ego is a lot more bouncy and cushioned compared to a relatively responsive quantic midsole

Widened toebox, more streamlined upper, and I think it runs a bit shorter. Also I found that it runs a bit narrower through the midfoot compared to the 4.5, in which I had to cinch the laces as tight as they would go.

I'm really not confident with Altra size. I have a 10.5 Torin plush that fits me well and I bought recently a pair of lone peak all weather in 10.5, well I floating in my lone peak 😑. I just ordered the Altra superior in 10, I hope that my toes nails will not regret it, but after your video I'm a bit afraid...
@TDMiller
@TDMiller 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Altras sizing is all over the place. But the Torin 5 is particularly small in comparison with the other models & versions. I now try to order all Altra road running shoes in 10.5 and trail shoes half a size smaller. Since I've done this, I've not had any issues in sizing. It's as if their road and trail shoe departments don't communicate. I think you'll be fine with the Superiors in a 10! Let me know once they arrive!
