I like the fact that Degrassi didn’t portray the black and brown girls as uneducated. Liberty and Alli had a lot of boy drama but they were both really smart and the show never took that from them.

I constantly reference this exact moment in pop culture history. It was groundbreaking. My brother and I went to our grandparents’ in Florida for the summer and we snuck out of our rooms to watch degrassi late at night, volume so low, and when the commercial came on ✋🏾🙄. We still play it, both the commercial and the song.

Moon Chile we knew we weren’t supposed to be doing it 👀 but the plot drew us in. I used to stand on my parents bed and look down the stairs to see if they were coming. Had the channels alternating to Nickelodeon and had Disney memorized in case they pressed last. Down bad watching this and skins but at least I don’t think Euphoria created messy high school tv shows.

“Degrassi hates Black women.” I need a t-shirt that says that. Nothing is more relatable than that statement. We all went from hating Holly J to loving her so don’t feel bad about it. Fiona is my favorite Degrassi character of all time. I was heartbroken when she fell for Holly J who didn’t think of her that way. But I like that she moved on and they were able to maintain their friendship.

I think that she is one of the most complexly written characters of the show, and that unlike so many others, her character development seems organic and believable. It’s true that they ran out of storylines for her later on which was sad, but I’d rather that than the writers giving her random, stupid, out of character storylines just to keep her involved in the story. Plus you can’t ignore the fact that she’s the only character in the show that has a song written about her (Check out Fiona Coyne by Skylar Spence). I can’t excuse the cat incident though lol.

Spinner and Emma being endgame was a hate crime. But if it makes you feel better, during a special, the writers admitted that them writing that was a mistake and shouldn’t have happened (mostly because Emma should’ve married Sean). So at least they’re aware of their crimes.

Yeah season 11 was super long also and was boring for me but I made it through it took me so long season 12 was the last good one in my opinion but 13-14 and then degrassi next class was just okay

I love what you said about Sav because it hits so hard as a girl with 4 older brothers. It reminds me of when you see men online talking shit about women of their background and you’re like “but your mom is x thing too”. But in reality the women closest to misogynistic men are hurt by it the same as women they’re romantically involved with. When he said Alli had a “sex crazed double life” I was DONE. Luckily they wrote Sav in a comedic way or else idk if he could’ve been redeemed for his crimes against Queen Bhandari.

The reason seasons 10 and 11 are so long is that the first halves of the seasons aired during the summer in a soap opera format where from Monday to Friday one episode aired every day and then during the fall and spring blocks the episodes would air every Friday like before.

i personally liked the route degrassi took unlike other shows (glee, highschool musical etc) because degrassi was more relatable and the charters werent people who's parents were millionaires- they were characters we could relate to, average people

Not sure if you know but fun facts!: The writers were teasing the idea of making Craig and Marco love interests before filming the 2nd season. Both Peter and Drew were (allegedly) initially written to have intense sexual relations with Riley. Bianca’s storyline (background) was so dark and traumatizing that the network didn’t want it to happen. Season 9 was the original series finale and a spin-off for Manny was in the works (possibly “The LA Complex”) but the network didn’t want the series to end so they changed the formula to a soap opera; airing a new episode every Monday through Friday and it essentially served as a soft reboot and that’s why season 10 onward dropped the “The Next Generation” tagline.
