IMHO this is the greatest pop/rock tune with a "religious" theme. And Patrick Simmons (I believe it was him) stated in an interview that the band really didn't have any desire to promote any sort of religion or creed--they just loved the tune and wanted to do their own version of it. (I also think this might be the Doobies best tune overall!!)

@@adriannecote5319 Yes, I had to get approval when I brought music to school initially. It was like that from 1-12 grade. However, I eventually won them over. I brought music to play during assignments. Faculty saw class grades and attendance improve. This was in the 70's. I was the first to use music, slide projection, costumes, and tools for presentations at school. My best was in high school. I played "Flight Of Icarus" by Iron Maiden in English Literature class along while describing Henri Matisse's corresponding art piece. A comparison and contrast of the sound and visual. Music is my passion. It gets me thru life. Apologies for this lengthy response. Peace.🙏

The 70s were a tough decade to be a little kid: confusing and frightening with generations fighting each other and a lot of screaming and yelling for all the talk of love and peace. I don't know if this was supposed to be a "stoner song" like many assert. Possibly. But fortunately, I was too young to understand that. I saw the Doobie Brothers in the early 70’s when they toured with Chicago! What a great concert that was! They also toured with Steely Dan, as I recall. That had to be a great concert, too. There was so much good music during that time, it was just ridiculous. As teens….rock music was everything to us. It was a constant in our lives, everywhere we were, all the time. We had multiple dances in school every year from seventh grade, on, with live bands. When we graduated high school, and went to college, the clubs were the places to go… live music everywhere. One club I used to go to had a Doobies cover band. They mimicked the group pretty well. Great times!

From their 1972 album Toulouse Street, this is one of the few songs they didn't write. They heard The Byrds cover this song in 1969 and decided to do their version. Their version is distinguished by guitarist Pat Simmons, who sang lead on "Black Water", preaching the vocals "Jesus , He's my Friend". This song made it to Number 35 on The Billboard Hot 100's. Such a great tune, with great guitars, organs and vocals, and great tempo that just keeps you interested. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦

First saw the Doobies in '72 or '73 in Salt Lake City. We had gone there to see Three Dog Night. The Doobies opened the concert and at the time nobody had ever heard of them. When introduced we thought they said the Boobie Brothers. They blew the roof off the place and a couple of weeks later Listen to the Music and Jesus is Just Alright hit the radio. Been a fan ever since and last saw them in 2014 when they opened for Boston (who should be on your bucket list if they ever tour again). The band has gone through so many changes but Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons, the lead vocalists and guitarists, remain as the foundation of the band.

I didn't know what he meant, but the way he said through his drug filled haze it made perfect sense. He told me it was the current song by the Doobie Brothers and that it was really cool. And that afternoon on the radio I heard it. And I couldn't agree more. 👍 My favorites from them are TKAE ME ON YOUR ARMS AND ROCK ME, LISTEN TO THE MUSIC, ROCKING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, and TAKING IT TO THE STREETS. Yayyy!! I’m one of the many people who suggested this one! I knew you’d both LOVE it. Rob even clapped at the end 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I keep saying this but I’m so lucky to live in the SF Bay Area 🌉 & seeing all our great bands live. My next Doobs suggestion is to bring it down for South City Midnight Lady, sung by one of the other guitarists, Patrick Simmons 🎸

Hey Guys, This song has always been a "banger" and the truth of the matter is: Jesus is "more" than just alright with me...He is my Lord & Savior and our soon coming King!!!

Love me some Doobie Brothers anytime. You can't go wrong with anything from them they are so versatile. But here are a few deep album tracks that really rock, "Dark Eyed Cajun Woman", "Down On The Tracks", "Sweet Maxine" and the live version of "Dangerous". Keep up the great job really enjoy seeing you guys discovering and enjoying the music of my youth.

Another great 70's band with a two drummer lineup! Some of the best rocking songs of that decade like Road Angel, Down in the Track, Ukiah and Without You.
