Ambiance Lightstrip vs Play Bars: Which Reigns Supreme?
Hello everyone. In today's video the NEW Ambiance Gradient Lightstrip is going Head-to-Head with the Play Light Bars. Both are Philips Hue products and provide a nice lighting experience. I'll start off by saying that they're very expensive compared to the competition and it's not always justified. I've had Philips Hue lights for over 2 years and the App and general experience has been exemplary.
I'll talk about what I didn't like about the old Play Light Bar Setup and compare the light output, price and other things against the new Ambiance Gradient Lightstrip. I'll show the full setup process and how you can integrate the Lightstrip into your Hue Sync Setup. There are plenty of demos throughout the video to give you a good idea of how each setup performs.
If you have any questions, please do ask them in the comments section. If there are any Smart Lighting products or any tech in general you want me to cover, that would be welcome too.

Hey man, cool video and very helpful! One question, you mentioned you considered using the play gradient light tube but because it was sold out you got the gradient strip. Do you think there would be any benefit of using the tube instead of the strip? And how would you've mounted the tube in your setup? Keep up the good work, cheers!
@ManchesterTechGuy

Thanks Hessel, appreciate the kind words. If I did have the Play Gradient Light Tube, I wouldn't mount it behind the TV and rather place it at the top of my TV unit behind the Soundbar. I would rotate it so that it would shine light at all of the empty space below the TV. It would definitely light up more of the space since I can angle it, whereas with the Lightstrip the light output is parallel to the back wall and so it doesn't saturate as far down.

Great video. In my experience, if the TV is a bit further from the wall, and the Play bars are pointed directly at the wall, instead of down, they work a lot better, as the light gets more evenly diffused and matches the Play Gradient's glow above. Thankfully the Play Bars ship with both kinds of mounts.

Thanks Josh, yeah, I only realised that after. The dark spots were less noticeable, but I had already committed to the change at that point. I'm super happy with how it all blends together with the light strip. Thanks for watching.

@@ManchesterTechGuy Well, I enjoyed your presentation and will be subscribing! I've got so much Hue gear, and have enjoyed the Sync Box from the start. I am however starting to "max out" my hub, now past 50 lights, so I imagine problems will start if I add more, and really don't want to involve the hassles of a 2nd hub. So you can bet your bottom dollar, if and when I have to reduce the number of Hue lights in my small home, my next consideration will be replacing the 4 Play Bars at the bottom of my 78" TV with an Ambient Gradient Lightstrip instead. I will say, the new Play Gradient Tube looks cool but it's shorter length. And isn't designed to be mounted on the back of the TV, it's supposed to sit on a shelf below? Oh and also is sold out everywhere, lol. But everyone's priorities, hardware setup and aesthetic are different. With a soundbar at the bottom of a TV, for example, Play Bars might make more sense than either a gradient lightstrip or tube. Part of me is grateful for the device limitations of the Hub otherwise I'd already have thrown even more of my wallet at Hue. Thanks again for the great video and your reply.

@@joshfofer No worries at all Josh, really appreciate the support. I'm nearing the limit myself honestly and I didn't get rid of the Play Bars. They now feature in my PC setup behind the monitors, haha. I have 20 hue spot lights in my Living Room, the Play Gradient Lightstrip, the Ambiance Lightstrip and a Signe Lamp, so nearly half the limit has gone there. The light tube is something I was considering as well and even though the longest one is 125cm I think it'll provide good coverage since you can angle it to your liking. I have a soundbar on my TV stand, but I can fit one behind it. Yeah, you're right, it's not designed to be mounted behind your TV. Shame there's no stock as I would have definitely picked one up.

I'm curious if you might do a comparison between Philips Hue and Govee as far as their TV lighting setups go. There are a lot of things I like about the Philips Hue, but the fact that the sync box, gradient light strip, and bridge all cost probably three or four times as much as Govee's setup is a big problem. What also bothers me is that the Hue Sync box doesn't have HDMI 2.1, which is surprising considering the cost. I also don't know why Philips Hue didn't make the Gradient Light Strip to go completely around the TV rather than leaving the bottom open. The Govee setup with light bars and LED strip can be found for $129.99 and sometimes as low as $110.00, while the entire Philips Hue setup can run $500 to $700 depending on what you get. That being said, I'm iffy on the Govee camera and the Gradient Light Strip looks better than Govee's bare Strip of LEDs. It does seem like there are pros and cons to each. If Philips Hue would just upgrade the Hue Sync Box to HDMI 2.1 I think it would make the price a little more acceptable. Good video. I'm impressed with how you showed the issue with the light bars and the steps you took to install the new light strip.

Thanks Thomas, there is a massive price discrepancy between the two, no doubt. I am planning to do a comparison at some point, but I've not had the time to work on new videos recently. I just recently found out about these as I purchased 3 play bar from Costco for only $130. I will be returning them though and getting this gradient light strip instead which is currently on sale right now for around $162 at BB. It's worth paying more just to have no gaps and plus the gradient light strip takes up less space too. It's kinda dumb that Phillip doesn't just give you the bottom section when you're paying so much for the play gradient light strip already. To not even offer a true add-on is ridiculous too. Kinda sucks that you have to cut down the 80" gradient strip just to make it fit. Why not sell them in different sizes at a cheaper price as I will only need around 60" for my setup as I too have a 77" TV. Edit: I also wanted to say thank you for letting us know how many inches (10") apart the arrows are when it comes to cutting them as a few other videos I've seen doesn't even mention it.

Hey Hang, yeah, it's ridiculous that there are no smaller options. They're really missing a trick there. It's definitely worth filling the gaps with a single lightstrip. Future versions of the play gradient lightstrip should cover the bottom too or else it'll start to become ridiculous. I don't think they'll release a new version for a while yet. Glad I could help with the length info and thanks for watching.

Could you not have bought another 55” gradient light strip for the bottom?
@ManchesterTechGuy
@ManchesterTechGuy Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately no as you can't set the light to sync to the bottom of the TV in the App. It'd sync with the top, left and right, making the lighting weird. Hope that made sense

@@ManchesterTechGuy oh right ok. I’ve just purchased the light tube to give that a try. Got the same set up as you- 77” CX, ps5, gradient light strip. Will report back :)

Hey Daena, some of your videos popped up for me too. Good to see another familiar face. The audio in this video is a bit messed up. Tried something new in audacity for the last couple of vids and it clearly didn't work

@@ManchesterTechGuy Good to hear it dude! I think you're doing a great job so far! I did it full time while furloughed, and for a few months after being made redundant! So I managed to churn out a lot of content and a lot of editing practice! Plus spent a LOT of cash on my studio! It's an enjoyable process! Do you have a Discord?

@@MachineDaena Ah, that's cool. At the beginning I was pretty consistent, but since I've upped my quality and other things getting in the way, I struggle to get more than one video out a month. I have a discord account, but not my own server, if that's what you mean?

I know this is going to sound really rude and I apologize I only mean to be constructive. It is incredibly difficult to listen to your videos because of the cadence of your voice. You build up you drop you build up you drop the whole video goes like that. I am sure that if I spoke to you in real life you didn't speak like. It would be extremely unappealing. It is very hard to follow you . Attempt to speak in the cadence that you would with your friends... Again I know it's very critical sounding but it comes from a good place I hope it helps the content is great.

Hey man, yeah, no offense taken. I definitely need work on the cadence. I changed it up a little in my newest video. Watch a little bit of that and let me know if it's any better? I will take your feedback on board and be more cognizant of how I sound. Thanks for watching.

@@ManchesterTechGuy i just gave it a listen . Yes much better. From my perspective . I appreciate you being so receptive to one guys comments. I have to be very clear that that was only my opinion. Your content is very good man keep it up ! I'm just starting my stupid channel and I definitely understand that need for good content in the good voice over. And I fully admit that it is very difficult to create genuine good content and also good for voice over
