9:55 This song actually has a pretty sad backstory. A friend of the bandmembers was addicted to drugs and died of an overdose. In that song they actually somehow blame themselves for not being stricter with her before it was too late and she had changed so much they couldn't even talk to her reasonably anymore and why this had to end up like that. So yeah pretty heartwrenching for me to hear the desperate "Warum?" (Why) in the chorus.

It's just that there are hardly any apprentices (and from what I understand it's very different from the German system). It showed up the flaws of the system and I doubt anything has been done to improve that? But ... the case against Lindemann was dropped according to Wiki. And that's that. And holy moly Xavier Naidoo ... I did not see that one coming. Now, I never liked his art (too schmaltzig), so I'm getting a good chuckle out of this. "Wind of Change" is one of those pieces of art that that were made of inpiration at the place, in this case by the Singer Klaus Meine sitting at nighttime in Gorky Park (hence it's in the song) and... feeling his feelings I guess ^^ The iconic whistling was the first idea for the song, which underlines that. It was the most sold single and radio song in 1991. Since 2022 all live version have replaced text with mentions of Ukraine. Too bad that the wind of change and the hope in the song did not come true.

I guess the warning label at the beginning was about Xavier Naidoo. He was a big german singer known for his "schnulzige" (romantic and idealistic) music, and he went completely mental during corona in the last few years and is now one of the hardest conspiracy theory supporters out there. He started preaching and making songs about "Reichsbürger-ideologien" which are like ideologies from a group that wants to throw over the government based on crazy conspiracy theories. For example they say Germany is not a state but a company founded by the US-government after WW2 and the whole world is ruled by the jews anyway and more crazy stuff like that. really scary things and a really sad individuum.

Even with subtitles, it's hard to understand what's going on for non-Germans. The cultural references fly right over their head. I tried showing the infamous soccer intro to my American husband, he was mostly confused. And it's not like he and I don't share a sense of humor at all. Since so much of German culture remains strictly German, that gap is often insurmountable. That's why you can't market any of Bully's work abroad, that's why Loriot is only funny to people who understand German culture. Just imagine trying to explain Lissi und der wilde Kaiser and why exactly it's funny. You'd have to start with the original movies, the friction between Austria and Bavaria (both at the time and still existing), the perception of dialects in Germany ... and that's just what I can think of the top of my head. Schuh des Manitou is even worse in some ways.

a little correction the song was released in 1991 so it couldn't be played in 1989 because it didn't exist back then. But yes it is about the end of to the cold war and the fall of the iron curtain and yes for people who lived through 1989 and were involved with theses events it is the anthem that brings back the memories, the hope that we would now go forward into a brighter future as a united Germany and a united Europe in a safer world. But in 1989 and 1990 no one sang it. In this regard David Hasselhoff with 'Looking for Freedom' fits much better. I was only 9 - 10 at that time living in the former GDR and i was in fact a fan of David Hasselhoff. I can't remember any other songs that were really connected to the events of the time. Wind of Change really took over the connections because it was played so often together with the old video footage of the fall of the Berlin wall. I actually remember that we had it as part of our english lesson the task was to listen to the song and write down the lyrics. Must have been in 5th or 6th grade not completely sure so i either had just started to learn english or i was in my second year of learning it.

I don't know if I would fully agree to that they made it without being obscene. They had quite some controversial songs in particular at the beginning of their career. And some of them had also partially obscene lyrics. Some examples are "Frohes Fest" or "Saft" or the song "Arschloch", which was not released as a single and is found on their second album. "Eins und eins" is also quite juicy, it is the B-side of "Frohes Fest" and a german version of the song "All day and all of the night" from the 2 Live Crew, who covered that from the Kinks. But yeah, later on in their career they became more serious with their lyrics.

As a German I'm surprised myself - for example to hear the Lou Bega is from Munich (according to Wikipedia). So much good music coming from Germany - which I always thought mostly produced crap... Well glad to see that I was wrong all along :)
