👨🏽‍🦲ABOUT ME
It's your man, Jeff Thornton, and I'm ready to take you on a journey through my life!
I was born on Holloman Air Force Base, NM, and raised in the beautiful city of Alamogordo, NM.
Growing up as the youngest of six kids, you'd think I'd have it easy, right?
WRONG.
My siblings were always keeping me on my toes, and I wouldn't have had it any other way.
Family has always been my number one priority, and I owe that to my parents, Captain Robert and Dina Thornton, for instilling those values in me from a young age.
Now, let's talk about my love for sports.
From football to hockey, I've always been a natural athlete.
I was even the “Team Captain” for my high school football team, which I'm still proud of to this day.
But let's be real, sports are great and all, but nothing compares to the rush of being transported to a whole new world through video games.
When I was three years old, my sisters and I decided to be helpful and clean our brothers' Nintendo console.
Sounds like a good idea, right
Well, we used WATER.
Needless to say, we destroyed the whole thing.
But that moment taught me something invaluable - gaming is more than just playing a game, it's about bonding with your loved ones over a shared experience.
Video games have been a constant throughout my life, bringing my family together and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
And that's why I'm still a gamer to this day.
It's not just about playing a character in a digital world, it's about the relationships and the community that gaming creates.
So, to all the gamers out there, let's embrace our inner nerd and never let go of that youthful spirit that makes us who we are.
Thanks for tuning in, and much love to you!
- Jeff Thornton, Owner + CEO of QSN

Not only he's funny but he is the best rugby referee out there (even though he's retired now). He refereed in 100 international matches among which 4 Rugby World Cups (2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019) and officiated in the final of 3 of these WRC (2011 assistant referee, 2015 main referee and 2019 sideline official) and is one of the most respected referee in Rugby.

16:10 - he’s said “if you want a CWTCH, do it off the field” Cwtch is a very Welsh word, that means a hug in this context. Best explanation I’ve found - “Cwtch (pronounced 'kutch', to rhyme with 'butch') is an everyday Welsh word for a special sort of cuddle or hug, an emotionally significant embrace”

Context, @7:38 This was a World cup game played at a football (soccer) stadium, and he's refering to how Footballers act injured to hopefully win a penelty, in other words, if you want to act soft come back when there's a football game on, you can act soft then, no place for that in rugby.

Going on to become the most respected Ref for both his ability to as you said so eloquently explain the rules, to his banter with the players and having big forward getting down on one knee so he could speak to them.

What Nigel gave the game is love. His passion and respect for the game of rugby was on show everytime he stepped onto the pitch If any player or others showed disrespect towards the game, he explained to them what would happen. With most sports, referees get a bad reputation but with Nigel, he made you want to watch proper rugby being played and enjoy everything from the gameplay to fans atmosphere in the stands The guy is a true great of the world of rugby.

I don't think there's been many, if any, refs more respected in the game than Nigel Owens. Yes, he had a like for the melodrama, but he held everyone to a degree of sportsmanship and respect that we've lost a little bit of since he's retired. We've lost a lot since him and Wayne Barnes retired as refs.

@QSNgg as an aside. Nigel Owens has now retired. He refereed the 2015 world cup final, before retiring from international refereeing. He now does Whistle Watch on KZfaq. Giving a little analysis on the big refereeing moments from the international games. Its on the World Rugby KZfaq channel I believe. He gives a good break down on the Laws applicable, and is really good to learn more.

Oh man, I miss Nigel, he was one of a kind. The thing that you don't see in any of these clips is that the games he reffed were smooth as fuck, the game progressed really nicely. I feel bad for Wales fans, they never had the pleasure of having him ref their games. I loved having him as a ref for a Bok game, you knew you'd have a fair and smooth flowing game. Also, the comment he made in the beginning about I'm straighter than that. The context is probably as you imagine, Nigel is gay.

NIgel Owens is one of the greatest rugby union refs that's ever lived. To your "context" point (I think related to the Nigel's "straighter than me" comment), the great man, who is almost exactly the same age as me, so I feel like I've known him all my life in some ways, lives on his working farm just up the road from where I live (about five miles away), with his partner of many years, Barrie Jones-Davies. the closest ref we have on the international stage now to nigel banter wise, is angus gardener. nowhere near as iconic yet, but i make the bet that in 5 - 10 years the comments we’re making about nigel now will be being made about angus. both are very much interested in having an open dialogue with players while also making it very obvious that at the end of the day they have the final say at the end of the day.

Nigel was so respected because he was so good at his job. Rugby has a lot of rules, half of which I don’t think most players know lol It’s way more complicated than football (soccer) but rugby referees tend to get it right a lot more than football refs, so the players know if Nigel says something, he’s right, if you disagree, keep it to yourself.

The good thing we see in video 2 which should be used in other sports. If you have a go at the ref or swearing too much you forfit 10 meters. Then if you swear at him for that decision you lose another 10. Thats why in Rugby the ref is respected.

a guy already said it below, but the ¨I`m straighter than that one¨ is because ¨line out¨ throw ins are supposed to be straight in rugby... as in as straight down the line of players as possible (although there is some leeway given as an unspoken rule).. but like was said previously, Nigel Owens is openly gay and became an icon for coming out in such a machista world that is Rugby... so the comment is... to put it lightly... fucking hilarious

"I'm straighter than that one"? Nigel Owens is openly gay ... so for him to say that ... ABSOLUTELY CLASSIC. I remember watching that game ... the commentary crew just pissed themselves laughing when they heard that. Fantastic Ref ... he kept the game moving. He was strict, he was objective and pulled up every infringement ... but he wasn't unnecessarily pedantic. He controlled the game and kept it flowing. One thing I liked about him ... he was REALISTIC. At 16.35 ... there's an incident where he says "You're just a bit unlucky. You've gone in for the tackle, he slips as you make it. It's high and it's nothing more than a penalty. That's it". THAT isn't happening with Refs in current Test Rugby. Refs ... and TMOs .... are finding ANY excuse to throw out yellow and red cards. In today's game this incident would have attracted a yellow card and the player sinbinned ... possibly a red card and sent off. Given by Refs who don't understand the play in Rugby. Nigel Owens understood this stuff.

I love the reference you mentioned about Nigel explaining the high tackle and just giving a penalty instead of a yellow or red card. 4:24 during a conversation kick, the defence is allowed to charge down the kick, provided they start behind the Try line and don't start running until the kicker does. Second best game in the world, after cricket, obviously. Look at the respect shown. When he says this is not football, you can understand it. I'd love to see some of those divas give this a go, Ronaldo, Messi, even the supposedly tough guys of yesteryear, the likes of Roy Keane. They get mullered and cry. Ronaldo, didn't he cry because he fractured an eyelash or something like that? All those monsters on the rugby field, all, to a man, show Owens respect. Proper sport played by proper , gentlemen, for the most part.
