Thank you so much for checking out this special episode of The Meaningful Stitch where I host the beautiful Jackie Rose to talk all about the Scottish Shrug Club KAL that we are co-hosting for The Scottish Yarn Festival held in Perth Scotland on the 9th and 10th of September.
To join in, you are invited to knit a shrug as designed by Jackie (see below for Ravelry links to the patterns), and we will have a KAL meet-up and group photo opportunity on both days of the festival.
Even if you're not able to attend this year's festival, you can still join in! Just use the hashtag #ScottishShrugClubKAL on Instagram to participate.
The Saturday, Sunday and Friday Shrug patterns are all free on Ravelry, and you'll see lots of inspiring examples of them in this video.
Friday Shrug - Jackie Rose (Ravelry): www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr...
Saturday Shrug - Jackie Rose (Ravelry): www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr...
Sunday Shrug - Jackie Rose (Ravelry): www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr...
If Ravelry is not available to you, but you still want to participate, please get in touch with me, and we'll figure it out.

I’m so grateful to have women like you to look to in knitting and life. Seeing my peers embrace their years without covering their beautiful locks with dye fills me with hope that the next generation of women will be respected and appreciated for their years of experience.🙏💗

Made the Saturday Shrug purposely for a plane flight from NY to Europe and back this past month. Great, easy pattern that was better than an airplane blanket or sweater ever. Thank you❤

I just finished my first one while imagining what my Ancestors were doing during their time on earth. I have gotten as far back as 1587 Edinburgh Scotland but most of the more recent ones hailed from either Lanarkshire or Kirkudbridge. I may not visit my homeland and our family's castles physically anytime soon but I am there in Spirit and heart every single day, and daydream of one day meeting you.

Thanks for inspiration. I cast on last night using some special hand dyed I bought on one of the SYF links. Hopefully will finish in time for festival and be brave enough to say hello at festival. Hope to see you there x

So much fun to see you both together again! I'm also in love with Jackie's shrugs and am knitting a second for myself as well as another for a Christmas gift. I do love not having to worry about sizing and who wouldn't love to have one of these?!

Thank you for this podcast! I’ve made 3 Sunday shrugs -gave one as a gift and now gave a Saturday on my needles with Friday shrugs to come. I made my first to use up some chunky wool I had in hand and fell in love with the comfort and esthetics so they are becoming a wardrobe staple and gift giving go to. Love them! Thank you!

❤this is such a wonderful chat! And I just love the story behind the shrugs. Everyone is getting one from me for Xmas this year! But, casting on one right now for my cousin who was just diagnosed. Gonna add a little of my handspun angora so she can get a soft hug from me whenever she needs one🩷

Thank you Amy for bringing this delightful, informative fun interview to us. I’m hooked on trying the Friday shrug. I especially liked the last one made with Linen Quill that was so beautifully faded. Initially, I had a little trepidation at trying the shrug due to the fact that I am “busty” - but so are you. Additionally, I am small in stature but I have decided to give it a “go” and play with it til it works for me. It would also make a wonderful gift. All this is quite “heart jumping” as Sarah from It’s a Sarah podcast would say. I’m originally from Scotland and hope I can find a podcast of the Scottish Yarn Festival on KZfaq when it happens. Bye for now.

I'm sure there will be footage on KZfaq to enjoy after our gathering. We have put together playlists on KZfaq for our Scottish Wool Producers Showcase and there are some for Perth Festival of Yarn (our previous incarnation.)

Yes, I bought yarn for it yesterday. Although I've been planning one since you first wore yours a few episodes ago. I'm doing a chunky yarn, five colors... AND i have two friends doing it with me too. KNitting pals from Wales, California and me in Alaska. Great little video here.

I'd like to make the Friday Shrug using a DK weight yarn that I already have on hand, instead of two fingering weight yarns held together. Would that work? Thank you.

On average how long does it take you to knit one? Working on my second one.
@AmyPalko

Depends on which one you choose. The Sunday Shrug was a very quick knit! The Friday is in the lightest weight yarn so would probably take the longest.

Thank you for this - I do love a pattern that has the purpose of being a jumping off point for everyone’s individual creativity. I have one question, - I am a little more broad shouldered than you and Jackie. Do you have any advice on adding stitches so that I can style in the same way that you do without preventing myself from moving my arms! If it was just plain stocking stitch I could work it out but ribbing worn at negative ease has foxed me a little. Thank you!

I am in love with all of the shrugs; easy to knit and so versatile to wear! I grew up in Frederick Maryland where Claire McCardell was born and is buried. Her line of clothing was manufactured in Frederick near the local airport in a factory that later produced men’s suits. Her father was a state senator and president of Frederick County National Bank as was his father before him. The last name is pronounced McCard-ell. Claire attended a prestigious all girls school called Hood College just a few blocks from her home.
