Country Joe and the Fish are best known today for The Fish Rag (also known as I Feel Like I’m Fixin’ to Die Rag), which they released as a single in 1967, and famously performed at Woodstock, One of the most enduring songs written in protest of the Vietnam War, this song has been used in films such as More American Graffiti, and TV series like The Wonder Years.
It’s a quite obviously anti-war song, and the band themselves were staunch non-conformists and communists. The band features a range of weird and wild instruments, from the kazoo to the calliope, and is a damning indictment of the American War Machine. In this video I take a look at what makes this song work, analysing the lyrics and the music.
Think of this video as something of an informed reaction!

This original version was released on a sound sheet and was part of a handout protesting the war

It's that law that causes some people to completely miss the point of songs like Fortunate Son and interpret it as an extremely patriotic song. It shouldn't seem possible and yet here we are. Great video as always though! Any hints on what you're gonna talk about next?

That's actually an excellent point! After all, who doesn't listen to Fortunate Son and think 'this sounds bad ass!'. That's the brilliance if *that* song: it's a little bit of trickery on the part of CCR, and means we can enjoy it both as a scathing anti war song, and a straightforward rock song! Glad you're enjoying my videos 😀 I have the next 4 videos lined up and partly written actually - it's just a matter of working out what order to do them in haha. I'll let you guide me. Would you prefer something proggy; something soulful and 60s; something quirky and singer songwritery; or a rock ballad about an air conditioner? 🤔😉

@@bigyellowpraxis I'm always partial to a bit of soul, but I've been trying to broaden my horizons with prog since finding your channel, so reckon go with that one first!

You're listening to the wrong version!!! That was done as a jug band in 65 to pass by The 1969 performance was because Joe was asked to perform Solo to fill stage time because they had no artists ready to play

You're missing a lot about context like you youth always do. This was a jug band tune. Jug band and bluegrass were used in folk music to make hard topics palatable. The spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down.

Your analysis misses the sheer genius of Country Joe’s artistic creation. He changed the world, while you are totally forgettable.

This is a music channel, so I analysed the song from a musical point of view. I also very much like the song, so am a little confused why you've been so rude 😂

Talking about the notes in this song is like writing your disortation on the fat Albert theme song.

The song itsellf is of minor value, its all about the lyrics and that easy "happy" background music.
