In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I am tackling a topic that has left an indelible mark on the world: the COVID-19 pandemic. As we navigate through new variants and climbing cases, it's crucial to unravel the reasons why so many Americans got so sick and died during the pandemic. We dig into the questions of why we as a nation were so susceptible to COVID-19’s deadly effects. I also explore why and how Functional Medicine steps in where conventional approaches stumble.

Thanks doctor! As a person with considerable active lifestyle, i hit a rock bottom recently and couldn't understand these chronic illnesses. It hit me in recent months that i was only addressing symptoms just by follow conventional doctors. It got extremely exhausting and depressing, by how much i increasingly end up with multiple pills. Because i refused to live my life miserably, and when i finally realized that doctors are simply advocates for big pharmacy companies. I had an epiphany that i may never heal if i simply just follow doctors order and prescription. Therefore, i did my own research and began by simplifying my diet. I was amazed by how quickly i was able to eradicate fast food, processed food, eliminated 90% of sugar, added manageable daily exercise. My life completely changed! I feel like a new person, better diet, better mood, clarity of mind. I don't plan to ever go back. I intend to keep tight grip of my own diet....i felt helpless going to multiple doctors visits and just wanted the nightmare to end.

It's good to see MDs talking about nuutrition. I'm surprised no one talks about, for example, the recent Consumer Reports article that showed that all of our food, even fresh, is contaminated with plasticizers. CR only found one flavor of one brand of soda water that is free of plasticizers. That on top of the forever chemicals we eat and drink, the microplastics we all carry, the lead and cadmium in almost all chocolate, etc., etc. Honestly, it's a miracle any of us make it it past 20 on this toxic soup.

I agree to a point - I think it's so much better to EAT the whole food, rather than the oil pressed from it - I put a nice portion of avocado into my salad and mush it all around so it's like oil in there- that way I get so much fiber & potassium in addition to the benefits of the polyphenols of the oil - and they're fresher than the freshest oil. :) If you have loads of calories to spare, pour on the evoo, but I'd rather add more nutrient-dense foods, than having just oil!

I feel so sorry for Americans the private healthcare system is wrong. Some americans have such a fear of centralised healthcare. I thank god I have the NHS and wish you could have similar. I never once have to think about cost and healthcare. When I speak to American expats here and the stories they share of back home, it's no surprise they prefer it here. We have similar rates not far behind you, but the roll out and response and reception by the public was different because we largely believe in the NHS. It's so complicated. When I see Americans on Facebook do crowd funding for standard chemo treatment for their kid because their insurance doesn't cover it, it makes me sad. It needs to change.

Speak for yourself, not for une nation .and feel sorry for yorself USA its a Rich Nation . We have public health care in my country, Corruption, health based on medication are not healthy . We need less government and more understanding about food and prevention ., PREVENTION ITS NOT GOING TO THE DOCTOR AND MAKE EXAMS. Public health care is a very expensive system , at the and te ones who have more money use private doctors because those are always better, where is the right on that?. I am not against public health but it's not the answer, the doctor, all the systems are government servers and the government are server of the big farm, industry, the money , Public health could work in a small country, If USA had public health, forget about all those studies,you will never had those information. Love your valuable insights Dr Hyman. Wish we had someone as forward thinking as this in the UK. I also wonder if you know that Metformin can deplete B12 levels over time. And since B12 is metabolised in the gut, it's a primary driver of effective immune system function. Many peer reviewed reports also suggest Covid-19 is linked directly to low B12 levels caused either by medication, low meat intake, or gut-related absorption disorders. And with a general population now overly-focused on plant-based diets, along with poor quality processed food intake and higher levels of alcohol intake (which burns through B vitamins), B12 deficiency may well underlie many Covid-related diseases.

Awesome retrospective (first half of the podcast) of the covid situation - minus the politics. Being in my seventies, I followed fairly closely the evolution of the scene and in spite of my general reluctance to have recourse to drugs, unless there is a clear need to do so, I ended up with a vaccine and three booster shots. I did it for myself, of course, but equally out of civic duty to prevent spread and help minimizing the impact on the health care system. I was aware of the early impact of good levels of vitamin D on the severity of the disease, so I became even more diligent than usual at taking my daily dose. To my knowledge, I have so far escaped covid and I certainly will not get the fourth booster that has been recommended to me. I find that a potentially tragic consequence of inadequate information from the medical authorities that I have not seen raised is the fact that the next time there is a need to mobilize the population to take individual action for individual and common good, the reluctance to accept the recommendations or comply to the mandate will be even more controversial than it was for covid. It certainly would be for me. I dislike politicians as much as the next guy but they should be left out of this: who would want ANY politician to overrule medical authorities' prescriptions? If any information can shed light on failures of the medical recommendations the medical authorities should be the ones having to account for their decisions.

When he asked his doktors about the EIGHT COVID vaccines they gave him, they wouldn't discuss this with my dying friend. He had so many regrets on his deathbed. His "cancer" was in remission with CBD as the treatment. The doktors REFUSED to discuss the blood clots or the C vaccine. My condolences on your loss. We are in a large group.

It's generally understood that safe levels are below 100 (ng/mL), optimally between 50-80. If levels are above 80 , it's probably best to reduce supplementation to achieve blood levels of no more than 80 (ng/mL). Nmol/L has a higher range, so double check which metric is being used.

I've read that darker skin people can have lower levels due to increased melanin which protects the skin from the sun's rays. But most people, no matter their skin color, are subject to low D levels as we are indoors so much and rarely expose our whole bodies to sunlight. Best to supplement.

What about Monolaurin as a source of coconut extract?
@girlanonymous
@girlanonymous 5 ай бұрын
Nope, don’t do it. There is new research on it. I think it’s why I have high blood pressure now. I used coconut oil for years and it did nothing but clog arteries.

You should know that high cholesterol in the absence of a carb/sugar diet is not an issue of concern at all. I like what you say but when you ignore this fact makes me doubt everything else you say

I’m not sure how obese or overweight Asians countries are compared to USA but were their deaths comparable or we were still much more at risk?

Come on Dr. Hyman, you know about following the money.… Don’t pretend you’re not aware of why things were handled the way that they were. Sorry for the veil being lifted. That’s what the last few years were all about.

How dare you tell people real facts and data. Clearly you are not working for the government or a university. I’m 78 and have followed your advice for a year+ and have lost 35 lbs and blood tests are near optimal. By giving out this type of information you may be putting yourself in danger and should perhaps consider hiring someone to start your car in the morning.

It's not cheap anymore to eat. The meats have gone way up. The vegetables have gone way up. Our money has NOT gone up. Vegetables have bad things sprayed on them. Meat has growth hormones, antibiotics, which is really bad. Grass fed meat is expensive. When I was a girl more people were skinny and in better health. Now people are FAT! It's a shame what's going on in this country. Nobody seems to care. More people dying. And hospitals getting rich. Seen this with my DAD and Mom. Both died to soon in there early 70's. It's a SHAME!!!!!!!!

Now, I like you, BUT "we" sure aren't first. "We" aren't 5th, 10th, 15th or even 20th. I like the STUDY from 2017. If you don't where "we" rank look it up and then say "we" rank the best. Now, I went to the "best" in America. And then I left the country. It is no comparison. Our medical community should apologize.
